The Transfiguration
1Six days later, Jesus *took with Him Peter and #17:1 Or JacobJames, and his brother John, and *led them up on a high mountain by themselves. 2And He was transfigured before them; and His face shone like the sun, and His garments became as white as light. 3And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Him. 4Peter responded and said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good that we are here. If You want, I will make three #17:4 Or sacred tentstabernacles here: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” 5While he was still speaking, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and behold, a voice from the cloud said, “This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to Him!” 6When the disciples heard this, they fell #17:6 Lit on their facesface down to the ground and were terrified. 7And Jesus came to them and touched them and said, “Get up, and do not be afraid.” 8And raising their eyes, they saw no one except Jesus Himself alone.
9When they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus commanded them, saying, “Tell the vision to no one until the Son of Man has risen from the dead.” 10And His disciples asked Him, “Why then do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?” 11And He answered and said, “Elijah is coming and will restore all things; 12but I say to you that Elijah already came, and they did not recognize him, but did #17:12 Lit in him; or in his caseto him whatever they wanted. So also the Son of Man is going to suffer #17:12 Lit by themat their hands.” 13Then the disciples understood that He had spoken to them about John the Baptist.
The Demon-possessed Boy
14When they came to the crowd, a man came up to #17:14 Lit HimJesus, falling on his knees before Him and saying, 15“#17:15 Or SirLord, have mercy on my son, because he has seizures and suffers terribly; for he often falls into the fire and often into the water. 16And I brought him to Your disciples, and they could not cure him.” 17And Jesus answered and said, “You unbelieving and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring him here to Me.” 18And Jesus rebuked him, and the demon came out of him, and the boy was healed #17:18 Lit from that hourat once.
19Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, “Why could we not cast it out?” 20And He *said to them, “Because of your meager faith; for truly I say to you, if you have faith #17:20 Lit likethe size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.#17:20 Late mss add (traditionally v 21): But this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting”
22And while they were gathering together in Galilee, Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is going to be #17:22 Or betrayedhanded over to men; 23and they will kill Him, and He will be raised on the third day.” And they were deeply grieved.
The Temple Tax
24Now when they came to Capernaum, those who collected the #17:24 Equivalent to about two denarii or two days’ wages for a laborer, paid as a temple taxtwo-drachma tax came to Peter and said, “Does your teacher not pay the #17:24 Equivalent to about two denarii or two days’ wages for a laborer, paid as a temple taxtwo-drachma tax?” 25He *said, “Yes.” And when he came into the house, Jesus spoke to him first, saying, “What do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth collect customs or #17:25 I.e., a tax on each person in the censuspoll-tax, from their sons or from strangers?” 26When Peter said, “From strangers,” Jesus said to him, “Then the sons are #17:26 Lit freeexempt. 27However, so that we do not offend them, go to the sea and throw in a hook, and take the first fish that comes up; and when you open its mouth, you will find a #17:27 A silver four-drachma Greek coinstater. Take that and give it to them for you and Me.”

The true glory of Jesus
(Mark 9.2-13; Luke 9.28-36)
1Six days later Jesus took Peter and the brothers James and John with him. They went up on a very high mountain where they could be alone.#2 P 1.17,18. 2There in front of the disciples, Jesus was completely changed. His face was shining like the sun, and his clothes became white as light.
3All at once Moses and Elijah were there talking with Jesus. 4So Peter said to him, “Lord, it is good for us to be here! Let us make three shelters, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
5While Peter was still speaking, the shadow of a bright cloud passed over them. From the cloud a voice said, “This is my own dear Son, and I am pleased with him. Listen to what he says!”#Gn 22.2; Ps 2.7; Is 42.1; Mt 3.17; 12.18; Mk 1.11; Lk 3.22; Dt 18.15. 6When the disciples heard the voice, they were so afraid that they fell flat on the ground. 7But Jesus came over and touched them. He said, “Get up and don't be afraid!” 8When they opened their eyes, they saw only Jesus.
9On their way down from the mountain, Jesus warned his disciples not to tell anyone what they had seen until after the Son of Man had been raised from death.
10The disciples asked Jesus, “Don't the teachers of the Law of Moses say that Elijah must come before the Messiah does?”#Ml 4.5.
11Jesus told them, “Elijah certainly will come and get everything ready. 12In fact, he has already come. But the people did not recognize him and treated him just as they wanted to. They will soon make the Son of Man suffer in the same way.”#Mt 11.14. 13Then the disciples understood that Jesus was talking to them about John the Baptist.
Jesus heals a boy
(Mark 9.14-29; Luke 9.37-43a)
14Jesus and his disciples returned to the crowd. A man knelt in front of him 15and said, “Lord, have pity on my son! He has a bad case of epilepsy and often falls into a fire or into water. 16I brought him to your disciples, but none of them could heal him.”
17Jesus said, “You people are too stubborn to have any faith! How much longer must I be with you? Why do I have to put up with you? Bring the boy here.” 18Then Jesus spoke sternly to the demon. It went out of the boy, and at once he was healed.
19Later the disciples went to Jesus in private and asked him, “Why couldn't we force out the demon?”
20-21Jesus replied:#Mt 21.21; Mk 11.23; 1 Co 13.2.
It is because you don't have enough faith! But I can promise you this. If you had faith no larger than a mustard seed, you could tell this mountain to move from here to there. And it would. Everything would be possible for you.#17.20,21 for you: Some manuscripts add, “But the only way to force out that kind of demon is by praying and going without eating.”
Jesus again speaks about his death
(Mark 9.30-32; Luke 9.43b-45)
22While Jesus and his disciples were going from place to place in Galilee, he told them, “The Son of Man will be handed over to people 23who will kill him. But three days later he will rise to life.” All this made the disciples very sad.
Paying the temple tax
24When Jesus and the others arrived in Capernaum, the collectors for the temple tax came to Peter and asked, “Does your teacher pay the temple tax?”#Ex 30.13-15; 38.26.
25“Yes, he does,” Peter answered.
After they had returned home, Jesus went up to Peter and asked him, “Simon, what do you think? Do the kings of this earth collect taxes and fees from their own people or from foreigners?”#17.25 from their own people or from foreigners: Or “from their children or from others”.
26Peter answered, “From foreigners.”
Jesus replied, “Then their own people#17.26 From foreigners…their own people: Or “From other people…their children”. don't have to pay. 27But we don't want to cause trouble. So go and cast a line into the lake and pull out the first fish you hook. Open its mouth, and you will find a coin. Use it to pay your taxes and mine.”
