Pharisees and Sadducees Test Jesus
1The Pharisees and Sadducees came up, and putting Jesus to the test, they asked Him to show them a #16:1 I.e., confirming miraclesign from heaven. 2But He replied to them, “#16:2 Early mss do not contain the rest of v 2 and v 3When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’ 3And in the morning, ‘There will be a storm today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ You know how to discern the #16:3 Lit faceappearance of the sky, but are you unable to discern the signs of the times? 4An evil and adulterous generation wants a #16:4 I.e., confirming miraclesign; and so a #16:4 I.e., confirming miraclesign will not be given to it, except the sign of Jonah.” And He left them and went away.
5And the disciples came to the other side of the sea, but they had forgotten to bring any bread. 6And Jesus said to them, “Watch out and beware of the #16:6 I.e., fermented doughleaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” 7They began to discuss this among themselves, saying, “He said that because we did not bring any bread.” 8But Jesus, aware of this, said, “You men of little faith, why are you discussing among yourselves the fact that you have no bread? 9Do you not yet understand nor remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets you picked up? 10Nor the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many large baskets you picked up? 11How is it that you do not understand that I did not speak to you about bread? But beware of the #16:11 I.e., as a symbol of corruptionleaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” 12Then they understood that He did not say to beware of the #16:12 I.e., fermented doughleaven of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
Peter’s Confession of Christ
13Now when Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He was asking His disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” 14And they said, “Some say John the Baptist; and others, #16:14 Gr EliasElijah; and still others, #16:14 Gr JeremiasJeremiah, or one of the other prophets.” 15He *said to them, “But who do you yourselves say that I am?” 16Simon Peter answered, “You are the #16:16 I.e., MessiahChrist, the Son of the living God.” 17And Jesus said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon #16:17 I.e., son of JonahBarjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. 18And I also say to you that you are #16:18 Gr Petros, a stonePeter, and upon this #16:18 Gr petra, massive rock formation; bedrockrock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it. 19I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you #16:19 I.e., forbidbind on earth #16:19 Gr fut. pft. pass. tenseshall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you #16:19 I.e., permitloose on earth #16:19 Gr fut. pft. pass. tenseshall have been loosed in heaven.” 20Then He gave the disciples strict orders that they were to tell no one that He was the #16:20 I.e., MessiahChrist.
Jesus Foretells His Death
21From that time #16:21 Two early mss Jesus ChristJesus began to #16:21 Or showpoint out to His disciples that it was necessary for Him to go to Jerusalem and to suffer many things from the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and to be killed, and to be raised up on the third day. 22And yet Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, “#16:22 Lit (God be) merciful to YouGod forbid it, Lord! This shall never #16:22 Lit behappen to You!” 23But He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me; for you are not setting your mind on #16:23 Lit the things of GodGod’s purposes, but men’s.”
Discipleship Is Costly
24Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone wants to come after Me, he must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Me. 25For whoever wants to save his #16:25 Or soullife will lose it; but whoever loses his #16:25 Or soullife for My sake will find it. 26For what good will it do a person if he gains the whole world, but #16:26 I.e., suffers the loss offorfeits his soul? Or what will a person give in exchange for his soul? 27For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and will then repay every person according to his #16:27 Lit activitydeeds.
28 “Truly I say to you, there are some of those who are standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom.”

The Leaders Ask for a Miracle
1The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus, wanting to trick him. So they asked him to show them a miracle from God.
2Jesus answered, “At sunset you say we will have good weather, because the sky is red. 3And in the morning you say that it will be a rainy day, because the sky is dark and red. You see these signs in the sky and know what they mean. In the same way, you see the things that I am doing now, but you don’t know their meaning. 4Evil and sinful people ask for a miracle as a sign, but they will not be given any sign, except the sign of Jonah.” Then Jesus left them and went away.
Guard Against Wrong Teachings
5Jesus’ followers went across the lake, but they had forgotten to bring bread. 6Jesus said to them, “Be careful! Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.”
7His followers discussed the meaning of this, saying, “He said this because we forgot to bring bread.”
8Knowing what they were talking about, Jesus asked them, “Why are you talking about not having bread? Your faith is small. 9Do you still not understand? Remember the five loaves of bread that fed the five thousand? And remember that you filled many baskets with the leftovers? 10Or the seven loaves of bread that fed the four thousand and the many baskets you filled then also? 11I was not talking to you about bread. Why don’t you understand that? I am telling you to beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.” 12Then the followers understood that Jesus was not telling them to beware of the yeast used in bread but to beware of the teaching of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.
Peter Says Jesus Is the Christ
13When Jesus came to the area of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his followers, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”
14They answered, “Some say you are John the Baptist. Others say you are Elijah, and still others say you are Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
15Then Jesus asked them, “And who do you say I am?”
16Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
17Jesus answered, “You are blessed, Simon son of Jonah, because no person taught you that. My Father in heaven showed you who I am. 18So I tell you, you are Peter. On this rock I will build my church, and the power of death will not be able to defeat it. 19I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; the things you don’t allow on earth will be the things that God does not allow, and the things you allow on earth will be the things that God allows.” 20Then Jesus warned his followers not to tell anyone he was the Christ.
Jesus Says that He Must Die
21From that time on Jesus began telling his followers that he must go to Jerusalem, where the Jewish elders, the leading priests, and the teachers of the law would make him suffer many things. He told them he must be killed and then be raised from the dead on the third day.
22Peter took Jesus aside and told him not to talk like that. He said, “God save you from those things, Lord! Those things will never happen to you!”
23Then Jesus said to Peter, “Go away from me, Satan! You are not helping me! You don’t care about the things of God, but only about the things people think are important.”
24Then Jesus said to his followers, “If people want to follow me, they must give up the things they want. They must be willing even to give up their lives to follow me. 25Those who want to save their lives will give up true life, and those who give up their lives for me will have true life. 26It is worthless to have the whole world if they lose their souls. They could never pay enough to buy back their souls. 27The Son of Man will come again with his Father’s glory and with his angels. At that time, he will reward them for what they have done. 28I tell you the truth, some people standing here will see the Son of Man coming with his kingdom before they die.”
