Conception and Birth of Jesus
18Now the birth of Jesus the #1:18 See note v 16Messiah was as follows: when His mother Mary had been #1:18 Unlike engagement, a betrothed couple was considered married, but did not yet live togetherbetrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be pregnant by the Holy Spirit. 19And her husband Joseph, since he was a righteous man and did not want to disgrace her, planned to #1:19 Or divorce hersend her away secretly. 20But when he had thought this over, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for #1:20 Lit that whichthe Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21She will give birth to a Son; and you shall name Him Jesus, for #1:21 Lit He HimselfHe will save His people from their sins.” 22Now all this #1:22 Lit has happenedtook place so that what was spoken by the Lord through #1:22 I.e., Isaiahthe prophet would be fulfilled: 23“Behold, the virgin will #1:23 Or be pregnantconceive and give birth to a Son, and they shall name Him #1:23 Gr EmmanuelImmanuel,” which translated means, “God with us.” 24And Joseph awoke from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took Mary as his wife, 25#1:25 Lit and did not know her intimatelybut kept her a virgin until she gave birth to a Son; and he named Him Jesus.

Lk 1.26-38. Now the birth of Jesus Christ#1.18 Other ancient authorities read of the Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child of the Holy Spirit; 19and her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. 20But as he considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit; 21#Lk 2.21; Jn 1.29; Acts 13.23. she will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” 22All this took place to fulfil what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:

Is 7.14. “Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
and his name shall be called Emmanu-el”
(which means, God with us). 24When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took his wife, 25but knew her not until she had borne a son; and he called his name Jesus.
