Isaiah 46

Babylon’s Idols and the True God
1Bel has bowed down, Nebo stoops over;
Their idols have become loads for the animals and the cattle.
The things #46:1 Lit carried by youthat you carry are burdensome,
A load for the weary animal.
2They stooped over, they have bowed down together;
They could not rescue the burden,
But #46:2 Or their soul hashave themselves gone into captivity.
3¶“Listen to Me, house of Jacob,
And all the remnant of the house of Israel,
You who have been carried by Me from #46:3 Lit the bellybirth
And have been carried from the womb;
4Even to your old age I #46:4 Lit will be Hewill be the same,
And even to your #46:4 Lit gray hairsgraying years I will #46:4 Or supportcarry you!
I have #46:4 Or made youdone it, and I will bear you;
And I will #46:4 Or supportcarry you and I will save you.
5¶“To whom would you liken Me
And make Me equal, and compare Me,
That we would be alike?
6“Those who lavish gold from the bag
And weigh silver on the scale,
Hire a goldsmith, and he makes it into a god;
They bow down, indeed they worship it.
7“They lift it on the shoulder, carry it,
And set it in its place, and it stands there.
It does not move from its place.
Though one may shout to it, it cannot answer;
It cannot save him from his distress.
8¶“Remember this, and be #46:8 Lit firmassured;
Recall it to #46:8 Lit heartmind, you wrongdoers.
9“Remember the former things long past,
For I am God, and there is no other;
I am God, and there is no one like Me,
10Declaring the end from the beginning,
And from ancient times things which have not been done,
Saying, ‘My plan will be established,
And I will accomplish all My good pleasure’;
11Calling a bird of prey from the east,
The man of #46:11 Lit HisMy purpose from a distant country.
Truly I have spoken; truly I will bring it to pass.
I have planned it, I will certainly do it.
12¶“Listen to Me, you stubborn-minded,
Who are far from righteousness.
13“I bring near My righteousness, it is not far off;
And My salvation will not delay.
And I will grant salvation in Zion,
And My glory for Israel.

Isaiah 46
46
Babylonia's Gods Are Helpless
The Lord said:
1The gods Bel and Nebo#46.1 Bel and Nebo: Bel was another name for Marduk, the chief god of the Babylonians. Nebo was the son of Marduk and also an important god.
are down on their knees,
as wooden images of them
are carried away
on weary animals.#46.1 as … animals: One possible meaning for the difficult Hebrew text.
2They are down on their knees
to rescue the heavy load,
but the images are still taken
to a foreign country.
3You survivors in Israel,
listen to me, the Lord.
Since the day you were born,
I have carried you along.
4I will still be the same
when you are old and gray,
and I will take care of you.
I created you. I will carry you
and always keep you safe.
5Can anyone compare with me?
Is anyone my equal?
6Some people hire a goldsmith
and give silver and gold
to be formed into an idol
for them to worship.
7They carry the idol
on their shoulders,
then put it on a stand,
but it cannot move.
They call out to the idol
when they are in trouble,
but it doesn't answer,
and it cannot help.
8Now keep this in mind,#46.8 Now … mind: One possible meaning for the difficult Hebrew text.
you sinful people.
And don't ever forget it.
The Lord Alone Is God
9I alone am God!
There are no other gods;
no one is like me.
Think about what happened
many years ago.
10From the very beginning,
I told what would happen
long before it took place.
I kept my word 11and brought
someone from a distant land
to do what I wanted.
He attacked from the east,
like a hawk swooping down.
Now I will keep my promise
and do what I planned.
12You people are stubborn
and far from being safe,
so listen to me.
13I will soon come to save you.
I am not far away
and will waste no time;
I take pride in Israel
and will save Jerusalem.
