The family line of Jesus
1A long time ago, God promised to send somebody to save us. Jesus is that person. These names are the fathers and grand-fathers of Jesus, that lived a long time before he was born. This list shows that Jesus was from the family of David. David was the big boss over the Israel people. It also shows that David was from the family of Abraham.
2This list starts with Abraham, a really long time ago. He was the father of Isaac.
Isaac was the father of Jacob.
Jacob was the father of Judah and his brothers.
3Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah. Their mother’s name was Tamar.
Perez was the father of Hezron.
Hezron was the father of Ram.
4Ram was the father of Amminadab.
Amminadab was the father of Nahshon.
Nahshon was the father of Salmon.
5Salmon was the father of Boaz. His mother’s name was Rahab.
Boaz was the father of Obed. His mother’s name was Ruth.
Obed was the father of Jesse.
6Jesse was the father of David. He was the big boss over all that mob, the Israel nation.
So in that family there were 14 fathers from Abraham to David.
David was the father of Solomon. At first Solomon’s mother was the wife of another man called Uriah.
7Solomon was the father of Riaboam.
Riaboam was the father of Abijah.
Abijah was the father of Asa.
8Asa was the father of Jehoshafat.
Jehoshafat was the father of Jehoram.
Jehoram was the father of Uzziah.
9Uzziah was the father of Jotham.
Jotham was the father of Ahaz.
Ahaz was the father of Hezekiah.
10Hezekiah was the father of Manasseh.
Manasseh was the father of Amon.
Amon was the father of Josiah.
11Josiah was the father of Jeconiah and his brothers. At that time, the soldiers from Babylon came and fought the Jewish people. The Babylon mob won, and they took the Jewish people as prisoners to their country.#2 Kings 24:14-15; 2 Chronicles 36:10; Jeremiah 27:20
So in that family there were 14 fathers from David until the time they all had to go to Babylon.
12Jeconiah was the father of Shiyaltiel.
Shiyaltiel was the father of Zerubbabel.
13Zerubbabel was the father of Abihud.
Abihud was the father of Eliakim.
Eliakim was the father of Azor.
14Azor was the father of Zadok.
Zadok was the father of Akim.
Akim was the father of Eliud.
15Eliud was the father of Eleazar.
Eleazar was the father of Matthan.
Matthan was the father of Jacob.
16Jacob was the father of Joseph. Joseph was the husband of Mary, and Mary was the mother of Jesus. Jesus is the Christ, the man that God promised to send to save us.
17So in that family there were 14 fathers from Abraham to David, and there were 14 fathers from David until the time they all had to go to Babylon, and there were 14 fathers from that Babylon time until the time God sent Jesus to the world.
Joseph had a dream
18This is the story about how Jesus was born. He is the man that God talked about a long time ago. God promised to send him to us.#Luke 1:27
Mary was promised to a man called Joseph, but they hadn’t slept together yet, like married people do. Then the Holy Spirit made a baby grow inside Mary. 19Joseph found out that Mary was going to have a baby, and he was not happy. He knew that the baby wasn’t his, so he wanted to leave Mary. But he was a good man, and he didn’t want to shame her. So he thought, “I will just leave her quietly, without any argument.”
20While Joseph thought about that, he went to sleep and had a dream. He saw an angel messenger from God. The angel said, “Joseph, you are from the family of David. Look, you can go ahead and marry Mary. Don’t be too frightened to do that. You see, her baby is from the Holy Spirit, not from another man. 21She will have a baby boy, and you will name him Jesus. (That name Jesus means God saves.) You see, he will save his people, so that God will not punish them for the bad things they do.”#Luke 1:31
22That all happened just like God told one of his men to write in God’s book, a long time ago. He wrote,
23“There will be a young woman that has never slept with a man, like a woman does with her husband, but she will have a baby boy.
That boy will have a special name, Immanuel. That name means God is with us.”#Isaiah 7:14; 8:8, 10
24Joseph woke up and did what God’s angel told him to do. He married Mary. 25But he did not sleep with her, like a man does with his wife, until after her son was born. And he named the baby Jesus.#Luke 2:21

The Genealogy of Jesus Christ
1 The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.
2Abraham became the father of Isaac, and Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob became the father of Judah and his brothers, 3and Judah became the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez became the father of Hezron, and Hezron became the father of Aram,#Although the Greek text reads “Aram,” many English versions substitute the Old Testament form of the name, “Ram” (cf. 1 Chr 2:9; Ruth 4:19), here and in the following verse 4and Aram became the father of Amminadab, and Amminadab became the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon became the father of Salmon, 5and Salmon became the father of Boaz by Rahab, and Boaz became the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed became the father of Jesse, 6and Jesse became the father of David the king.
And David became the father of Solomon by the wife#*The word “wife” is not in the Greek text, but is implied idiomatically of Uriah, 7and Solomon became the father of Rehoboam, and Rehoboam became the father of Abijah, and Abijah became the father of Asa,#Greek “Asaph,” alternately spelled “Asa” in many English versions here and in the following verse (cf. 1 Chr 3:10) 8and Asa became the father of Jehoshaphat,#Greek “Josaphat”; alternately spelled “Jehoshaphat” in many English versions and Jehoshaphat became the father of Joram, and Joram became the father of Uzziah, 9and Uzziah became the father of Jotham, and Jotham became the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz became the father of Hezekiah, 10and Hezekiah became the father of Manasseh, and Manasseh became the father of Amon,#The earliest and best Greek manuscripts read “Amos,” but many English versions use the Old Testament form of the name here, “Amon” (cf. 2 Kgs 21:18) and Amon became the father of Josiah, 11and Josiah became the father of Jechoniah and his brothers, at the time of the deportation to Babylon.
12And after the deportation to Babylon, Jechoniah became the father of Shealtiel,#Greek “Salathiel,” but many English versions use the Old Testament form of the name here, “Shealtiel” (cf. Ezra 3:2) and Shealtiel became the father of Zerubbabel, 13and Zerubbabel became the father of Abiud, and Abiud became the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim became the father of Azor, 14and Azor became the father of Zadok, and Zadok became the father of Achim, and Achim became the father of Eliud, 15and Eliud became the father of Eleazar, and Eleazar became the father of Matthan, and Matthan became the father of Jacob, 16and Jacob became the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary by whom#The Greek relative pronoun is feminine gender and thus refers only to Mary, not Joseph was born Jesus, who is called Christ.
17Therefore all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon are fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to the Christ are fourteen generations.
The Birth of Jesus Christ
18Now the birth of Jesus Christ occurred in this way. His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant#Literally “to have in the womb” by the Holy Spirit. 19So Joseph her husband, being righteous and not wanting to disgrace her, intended to divorce her secretly. 20But as#*Here “as” is supplied as a component of the temporal genitive absolute participle (“considering”) he was considering these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for what has been conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21And she will give birth to a son, and you will call his name ‘Jesus,’ because he will save his people from their sins.” 22Now all this happened in order that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet would be fulfilled, saying,
23“Behold, the virgin will become pregnant#Literally “will have in the womb” and will give birth to a son,
and they will call his name Emmanuel,”#A quotation from Isa 7:14
which is translated, “God with us.”#An allusion to Isa 8:8, 10 in the Greek OT (LXX) 24And Joseph, when he#*Here “when” is supplied as a component of the participle (“woke up”) which is understood as temporal woke up from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and he took his wife 25and did not have sexual relations with#Literally “did not know” her until she gave birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus.
