The family line of Jesus
1A long time ago, God promised to send somebody to save us. Jesus is that person. These names are the fathers and grand-fathers of Jesus, that lived a long time before he was born. This list shows that Jesus was from the family of David. David was the big boss over the Israel people. It also shows that David was from the family of Abraham.
2This list starts with Abraham, a really long time ago. He was the father of Isaac.
Isaac was the father of Jacob.
Jacob was the father of Judah and his brothers.
3Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah. Their mother’s name was Tamar.
Perez was the father of Hezron.
Hezron was the father of Ram.
4Ram was the father of Amminadab.
Amminadab was the father of Nahshon.
Nahshon was the father of Salmon.
5Salmon was the father of Boaz. His mother’s name was Rahab.
Boaz was the father of Obed. His mother’s name was Ruth.
Obed was the father of Jesse.
6Jesse was the father of David. He was the big boss over all that mob, the Israel nation.
So in that family there were 14 fathers from Abraham to David.
David was the father of Solomon. At first Solomon’s mother was the wife of another man called Uriah.
7Solomon was the father of Riaboam.
Riaboam was the father of Abijah.
Abijah was the father of Asa.
8Asa was the father of Jehoshafat.
Jehoshafat was the father of Jehoram.
Jehoram was the father of Uzziah.
9Uzziah was the father of Jotham.
Jotham was the father of Ahaz.
Ahaz was the father of Hezekiah.
10Hezekiah was the father of Manasseh.
Manasseh was the father of Amon.
Amon was the father of Josiah.
11Josiah was the father of Jeconiah and his brothers. At that time, the soldiers from Babylon came and fought the Jewish people. The Babylon mob won, and they took the Jewish people as prisoners to their country.#2 Kings 24:14-15; 2 Chronicles 36:10; Jeremiah 27:20
So in that family there were 14 fathers from David until the time they all had to go to Babylon.
12Jeconiah was the father of Shiyaltiel.
Shiyaltiel was the father of Zerubbabel.
13Zerubbabel was the father of Abihud.
Abihud was the father of Eliakim.
Eliakim was the father of Azor.
14Azor was the father of Zadok.
Zadok was the father of Akim.
Akim was the father of Eliud.
15Eliud was the father of Eleazar.
Eleazar was the father of Matthan.
Matthan was the father of Jacob.
16Jacob was the father of Joseph. Joseph was the husband of Mary, and Mary was the mother of Jesus. Jesus is the Christ, the man that God promised to send to save us.
17So in that family there were 14 fathers from Abraham to David, and there were 14 fathers from David until the time they all had to go to Babylon, and there were 14 fathers from that Babylon time until the time God sent Jesus to the world.
Joseph had a dream
18This is the story about how Jesus was born. He is the man that God talked about a long time ago. God promised to send him to us.#Luke 1:27
Mary was promised to a man called Joseph, but they hadn’t slept together yet, like married people do. Then the Holy Spirit made a baby grow inside Mary. 19Joseph found out that Mary was going to have a baby, and he was not happy. He knew that the baby wasn’t his, so he wanted to leave Mary. But he was a good man, and he didn’t want to shame her. So he thought, “I will just leave her quietly, without any argument.”
20While Joseph thought about that, he went to sleep and had a dream. He saw an angel messenger from God. The angel said, “Joseph, you are from the family of David. Look, you can go ahead and marry Mary. Don’t be too frightened to do that. You see, her baby is from the Holy Spirit, not from another man. 21She will have a baby boy, and you will name him Jesus. (That name Jesus means God saves.) You see, he will save his people, so that God will not punish them for the bad things they do.”#Luke 1:31
22That all happened just like God told one of his men to write in God’s book, a long time ago. He wrote,
23“There will be a young woman that has never slept with a man, like a woman does with her husband, but she will have a baby boy.
That boy will have a special name, Immanuel. That name means God is with us.”#Isaiah 7:14; 8:8, 10
24Joseph woke up and did what God’s angel told him to do. He married Mary. 25But he did not sleep with her, like a man does with his wife, until after her son was born. And he named the baby Jesus.#Luke 2:21

The Genealogy of Jesus the Messiah
1The record of the genealogy of #Heb Yeshua (Joshua), meaning The Lord is salvation.Jesus the #Gr Christos. Greek for Messiah, which means Anointed One. Throughout his gospel, which is directed primarily to Jewish believers, Matthew uses OT Scripture to emphasize the fact that Jesus is their promised Messiah.Messiah, the son (descendant) of #The shepherd boy who killed the Philistine giant Goliath, and later became king of Israel.David, the son (descendant) of Abraham:
2Abraham #Lit begot, fathered, from the Greek word gennao, meaning “to father a child” (early modern English beget) and so throughout the genealogy whenever father occurs.was the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of #Gr Judas; names of people in the OT are given in their OT form.Judah and his brothers [who became the twelve tribes of Israel]. 3Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, Perez was the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Ram. 4Ram was the father of Aminadab, Aminadab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon. 5Salmon was the father of Boaz by #The woman who assisted the Hebrew spies before the conquest of Jericho (Josh 2:1-21).Rahab, Boaz was the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse. 6Jesse was the father of #David is the only one addressed as “the king.” The text places an emphasis on David, showing that Jesus is a descendant of David and an heir to the throne of David and the Davidic Covenant.David the king.
David was the father of Solomon by #Lit her of Uriah.Bathsheba who had been the wife of Uriah. 7Solomon was the father of Rehoboam, Rehoboam the father of Abijah, and Abijah the father of Asa. 8Asa was the father of Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, and Joram the father of Uzziah. 9Uzziah was the father of Jotham, Jotham the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz the father of Hezekiah. 10Hezekiah was the father of Manasseh, Manasseh the father of Amon, and Amon the father of Josiah. 11Josiah became the father of Jeconiah [also called Coniah and Jehoiachin] and his brothers, at the time of the deportation (exile) to Babylon.
12After the deportation to Babylon: Jeconiah became the father of Shealtiel, and Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel. 13Zerubbabel was the father of Abihud, Abihud the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim the father of Azor. 14Azor was the father of Zadok, Zadok the father of Achim, and Achim the father of Eliud. 15Eliud was the father of Eleazar, Eleazar the father of Matthan, and Matthan the father of Jacob. 16Jacob was the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, by #The Greek singular feminine pronoun hes, translated “whom,” shows that Jesus was born of Mary alone, without Joseph’s participation; however, Jesus was considered Joseph’s legal son and heir. Accordingly, Matthew’s genealogy confirms Jesus as a legitimate descendant of David.whom Jesus was born, who is called the Messiah (Christ).
17So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen; from David to the Babylonian deportation (exile), fourteen generations; and from the Babylonian deportation to the Messiah, fourteen generations.
Conception and Birth of Jesus
18Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: when His mother Mary had been #The first stage of marriage (called shiddukin in Hebrew) in Jewish tradition and law, usually lasting for a year before the wedding night; unlike an engagement, it was legally binding and required a divorce to nullify it. The woman remained with her parents during the betrothal year and was referred to as a “wife” even though the marriage was not consummated during this period of time (cf Deut 22:23, 24).betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child by [the power of] the Holy Spirit. 19And Joseph her [promised] husband, being a just and righteous man and not wanting to expose her publicly to shame, planned to send her away and divorce her quietly. 20But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, descendant of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the Child who has been #Lit begotten.conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21She will give birth to a Son, and you shall name Him Jesus (The Lord is salvation), for He will #Those who, by personal faith, accept Him as Savior are saved from the penalty of sin and reconciled with the Father.save His people from their sins.” 22All this happened in order to fulfill what the Lord had spoken through the #The prophets in the Bible always have the ability to foretell the future as revealed to them by God. Scripture provides stringent criteria for testing a prophet’s ability to foretell future events (Deut 18:22).prophet [Isaiah]: 23“Behold, the #“Virgin” (Gr parthenos) clearly confirms that Mary was a virgin when she gave birth to Jesus.virgin shall be with child and give birth to a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel”—which, when translated, means, “God with us.” 24Then Joseph awoke from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him, and he took Mary [to his home] as his wife, 25but he kept her a virgin until she had given birth to a Son [her firstborn child]; and he named Him Jesus (The Lord is salvation).
