Isaiah 34
34
CHAPTER 34
1Nigh, ye heathen men, to hear; ye peoples, perceive; the earth, and the fullness thereof, the world, and all burgeoning thereof, hear ye.
2For why [the] indignation of the Lord is on all folks, and strong vengeance on all the chivalry of them; he killed them, and gave them into slaying.
3The slain men of them shall be cast forth, and stink shall ascend [or go up] of the carrions of them; hills [or the mountains] shall flow of the blood of them.
4And all the chivalry of heavens shall fail, and heavens shall be folded together as a book, and all the knighthood of those shall float down, as the leaf of a vinery [or a vine] and of a fig tree falleth down.
5For my sword is filled in heaven; lo! it shall come down on Idumea, and on the people of my slaying, to doom.
6The sword of the Lord is filled of blood, it is made fat of the inner fatness of the blood of lambs and of bucks of goats, of the blood of rams full of marrow; for why the slain sacrifice of the Lord is in Bozrah, and great slaying is in the land of Edom.
7And unicorns shall go down with them, and bulls with them that be mighty; the land of them shall be filled with blood, and the earth of them with [the] inner fatness of fat beasts;
8for it is a day of vengeance of the Lord, a year of yielding of the doom of Zion.
9And the strands [or streams] thereof shall be turned into pitch, and the earth thereof into brimstone; and the land thereof shall be into burning pitch, night and day.
10It shall not be quenched without end, the smoke thereof shall go up from generation into generation, and it shall be desolate into worlds of worlds; none shall pass thereby.
11And an onocrotalus, and an urchin, shall wield it; and a capret, and a crow shall dwell therein; and a measure shall be stretched forth thereon, that it be driven to nought, and an hanging plummet into desolation.
12The noble men thereof shall not be there; rather they shall call the king into help, and all the princes thereof shall be into nought.
13And thorns and nettles shall grow in the houses thereof, and a teasel in the strongholds thereof; and it shall be the couch of dragons, and the pasture of ostriches.
14And fiends, and wonderful beasts, like men in the higher part, and like asses in the nether part, and an hairy, shall meet; one shall cry to another. Lamia shall lie there, and find rest there to herself;
15there an urchin had ditches, and nourished out whelps, and digged about, and fostered in the shadow thereof; there kites were gathered together, one to another.
16Seek ye diligently in the book of the Lord, and read ye; one of those things failed not, one sought not another; for he commanded that thing, that goeth forth of my mouth, and his spirit, he gathered them together.
17And he sent to them heritage, and his hand parted it in measure; till into without end they shall wield that land, in generation and into generation they shall dwell therein.

Judgment on the Nations
1Come near, nations, to hear;
and peoples, listen attentively!
Let the earth hear, and that which fills it;
the world and all its offspring.
2For the anger of Yahweh is against all the nations,
and his wrath is against all their armies;
he has put them under a ban,
he has given them up for slaughter.
3And their slain shall be cast out;
as for#Or “and” their corpses, their stench shall go up.
And the mountains shall melt with#Or “from” their blood,
4and all the host of heaven shall rot.
And the skies shall roll up like a scroll,
and all their host shall wither
like the withering of a leaf from a vine,
or#Or “and” like the withering from a fig tree.
5When my sword is drenched in the heavens,
look! It will descend upon Edom,
and upon the people of my ban, for judgment.
6Yahweh has a sword;#Literally “A sword for Yahweh”
it is full of blood.
It is covered with#Or “from” fat,
with#Or “from” the blood of lambs and goats,
with#Or “from” the fat of the kidneys of rams,
for Yahweh has a sacrifice#Literally “a sacrifice for Yahweh” in Bozrah
and a great slaughter in the land of Edom.
7And wild oxen shall go down with them,
and steers with strong bulls.
And their land shall be drenched with#Or “from” blood,
and their soil shall be fattened with#Or “from” fat.
8For Yahweh has a day of vengeance,#Literally “a day of vengeance for Yahweh”
a year of retribution for the strife of Zion.
9And its streams shall be changed to pitch and its soil to sulfur,
and its land shall become like burning pitch.
10Night and day it shall not be quenched;
its smoke shall go up forever.
From generation to generation it shall be in ruins;
forever and ever there will be no one who passes through her.
11But#Or “And” the large bird and the hedgehog shall take possession of it,
and the owl and the raven shall live in it.
And he shall stretch the measuring line of confusion out over it,
and the plumb line of emptiness.
12Its nobles—but no kingdom is there—shall call,
and all its princes shall be nothing.
13And thorns shall go up her citadel fortress,
weeds#Hebrew “weed” and thistle plants#Hebrew “thistle plant” in her fortresses;
and it shall be the settlement of jackals,
green grass for the daughters of an ostrich.
14And desert creatures shall meet with hyenas,
and a goat-demon shall call to his neighbor;
surely there Lilith#Hebrew transliteration; possibly a proper name for a Mesopotamian night-demon shall repose,
and she shall find a resting place for herself.
15There the owl shall nest and lay
and hatch and care for her chicks in her shadow;
surely there the birds of prey shall be gathered,
each one with her mate.
16Seek from the book of Yahweh and read;#Literally “call”
none of these shall be missing;
none shall miss her mate.
For my#The Dead Sea Scroll has “his” mouth is the one that#Literally “he” has commanded,
and his spirit is the one that#Literally “he” has gathered them.
17And he is the one that#Literally “he” has cast the lot for them,
and his hand has apportioned it to them with the measuring line;
they shall take possession of it forever,
they shall live in it from generation to generation.#Literally “to generation and generation”
