Isaiah 19

CHAPTER 19
1The burden of Egypt. Lo! the Lord shall ascend on a light cloud, and he shall enter into Egypt; and the simulacra of Egypt shall be moved from his face, and the heart of Egypt shall fail in the midst thereof.
2And I shall make Egyptians to run together against Egyptians, and a man shall fight against his brother, and a man against his friend, a city against a city, and a realm against a realm.
3And the spirit of Egypt shall be broken in the entrails thereof, and I shall cast down the counsel thereof; and they shall ask their simulacra, and their false diviners, and their men that have unclean spirits speaking in the womb, and their diviners by sacrifices made on altars to fiends.
4And I shall betake Egypt into the hand of cruel lords, and a strong king shall be lord of them, saith the Lord God of hosts.
5And [the] water of the sea shall wax dry, and the flood shall be desolate, and shall be dried.
6And the floods shall fail, and the strands [or rivers] of the fields shall be made thin, and shall be dried; a reed and spire shall fade.
7The bottom of water shall be made naked, and streams from their wells; and the moist place of all seed shall be dried, it shall wax dry, and it shall not be.
8And [the] fishers shall mourn, and all that cast hook into the flood shall wail; and they that spread abroad a net on the face of waters shall fade.
9They shall be shamed, that wrought flax, folding and ordaining subtle things.
10And the water places thereof shall be dry; all that made ponds to take fishes, shall be shamed.
11The fond princes [or fools] of Tanis, the wise counsellors of Pharaoh, gave unwise counsel; how shall ye say to Pharaoh, I am the son of wise men, the son of eld [or old] kings?
12Where be now thy wise men? Tell they to thee, and show they, what the Lord of hosts thought on Egypt.
13The princes of Tanis be made fools; the princes of Memphis faded; they deceived Egypt, a cornerstone of the peoples thereof.
14The Lord meddled [or mingled] a spirit of error in the midst thereof; and they made Egypt for to err in all his work, as a drunken man and spewing erreth.
15And work shall not be to Egypt, that it make an head and tail bowing and refraining.
16In that day Egypt shall be as women, and they shall be astonied, and shall dread of the face of the moving of the hand of the Lord of hosts, which he moved on it.
17And the land of Judah shall be to Egypt into dread; each that shall think on it, shall dread of the face of the counsel of the Lord of hosts, which he thought on it.
18In that day five cities shall be in the land of Egypt, and shall speak with the tongue of Canaan, and shall swear by the Lord of hosts; the city of the sun shall be called one.
19In that day the altar of the Lord shall be in the midst of the land of Egypt, and the title of the Lord shall be beside the end thereof;
20and it shall be into a sign and witnessing to the Lord of hosts, in the land of Egypt. For they shall cry to the Lord from the face of the troubler, and he shall send a saviour to them, and a for-fighter, that shall deliver them.
21And the Lord shall be known of Egypt, and [the] Egyptians shall know the Lord in that day; and they shall worship him in sacrifices and gifts, and they shall make vows to the Lord, and they shall pay.
22And the Lord shall smite Egypt with a wound, and shall make it whole; and [the] Egyptians shall turn again to the Lord, and he shall be pleased in them, and he shall make them whole.
23In that day a way shall be from Egypt into Assyrians, and Egyptians shall serve Assur; and Assur shall enter into Egypt, and Egypt into Assyrians.
24In that day Israel shall be the third to Egypt and to Assur, the blessing in the middle of [the] earth;
25whom the Lord of hosts blessed, saying, Blessed be my people of Egypt, and the work of mine hands be to Assyrians; but mine heritage be to Israel.

Isaiah 19

Oracle of Judgment on Egypt
1An oracle of Egypt:
Look! Yahweh is riding on a swift cloud
and is coming to Egypt.
And the idols of Egypt will tremble in front of him,
and the heart of Egypt melts in his inner parts.
2“And I will stir up Egyptians#Literally “Egypt” against Egyptians,#Literally “Egypt”
and each one will fight against his brother
and each one against his neighbor,
city against city, kingdom against kingdom.
3And the spirit of the Egyptians#Literally “Egypt” will be disturbed in his midst,
and I will confuse#Literally “engulf” his plans,#Hebrew “plan”
and they will consult the idols and the spirits of the dead,
and the ghosts and the spiritists.
4And I will hand over the Egyptians#Literally “Egypt” into the hand of a hard master,
and a powerful king will rule over them,”
declares#Literally “declaration of” the Lord Yahweh of hosts.
5And the waters will be dried up from the sea,
and the river will be parched and dry.
6And the rivers will become foul-smelling;
the branches of the Nile of Egypt will become little and dry up;
reed and rush will wither.
7Bare places by the Nile will be dried up,
by the edge of the Nile and all the sown land of the Nile;
it will be driven about, and it will be no more.#Literally “there is none of it”
8And the fishers will mourn,
and all of those who cast fishhooks#Hebrew “fishhook” in the Nile will lament,
and those who spread out fishing nets#Hebrew “net” on the surface#Literally “face” of the water will languish.
9And the workers of combed flax will be ashamed,
and those who weave white linen.
10And her weavers will be crushed;
all the hired workers#Literally “workers of wage” will be grieved of heart.
11Surely the princes of Zoan are foolish;
the wise of the counselors of Pharaoh give senseless counsel.
How can you say to Pharaoh,
“I myself am a son of sages,
a descendant#Literally “son” of ancient kings”?
12Where are your sages then?
Now, let them tell you,
and let them know what Yahweh of hosts has planned against Egypt.
13The princes of Zoan have become foolish;
the princes of Memphis are deceived;
the leaders of her tribes have led Egypt astray.
14Yahweh has mixed a spirit of confusion into her midst,
and they have caused Egypt to stagger in all of its doings,
as when a drunkard staggers#Literally “the staggering of a drunkard” in his vomit.
15And there will be nothing for Egypt to do,#Literally “not it will be for Egypt a deed which he can do”
head or tail, palm branch or reed.
The Future Blessing of Egypt, Assyria, and Egypt
16On that day, Egypt will be like women, and will tremble and be afraid before the waving hand of Yahweh of hosts that he is waving against it. 17And the land of Judah will become a terror to Egypt, everyone to whom one mentions it will be afraid in himself because of the plan of Yahweh of hosts that he is planning against him.
18On that day, there will be five cities in the land of Egypt that speak the language#Literally “lip” of Canaan and swear an oath to Yahweh of hosts. One will be called “City of the Sun.”
19On that day, there will be an altar for Yahweh in in the middle of the land of Egypt, and a stone pillar for Yahweh at her border. 20And it will be a sign and a witness to Yahweh of hosts in the land of Egypt; when they cry out to Yahweh because of oppressors, he will send them a savior and a defender,#Literally “contender” and he will deliver them. 21And Yahweh will make himself known to Egypt, and Egypt will know Yahweh on that day, and they will worship with sacrifice and offering, and they will make vows#Hebrew “vow” to Yahweh, and they will fulfill them. 22And Yahweh will strike Egypt, striking and healing; and they will return to Yahweh, and he will respond to their prayer, and he will heal them.
23On that day, there will be a highway from Egypt to Assyria, and Assyria will come into Egypt, and Egypt into Assyria, and Egypt will worship together with Assyria.
24On that day, Israel will be the third with Egypt and Assyria, a blessing in the midst of the earth, 25whom Yahweh of hosts blessed, saying, “May Egypt my people be blessed, and Assyria, the work of my hands, and my inheritance, Israel.”
