Chapter 28
Jesus becomes alive again
1After the day of rest had finished, Mary from Magdala and Mary the mother of James got up early. It was dawn on the first day of the week. They went to the hole in the rock where Joseph had put the dead body of Jesus.
2At that moment, the ground moved about very strongly. One of the Lord God's angels came from heaven. He went to the rock. He rolled the big stone away from the hole and then he sat on top of it. 3He shone brightly like lightning. His clothes were very white like snow. 4The soldiers who were carefully watching that place were very frightened. They suddenly fell down on the ground. Like dead men, they could not move.
5Then the angel said to the women, āDo not be afraid. I know that you are looking for Jesus. The soldiers killed him on a cross. 6But he is not here. He has become alive again. That is what he said would happen. Come here. You can see the place where he was lying. 7Then you must go quickly to his disciples. Tell them, āJesus is alive again, and he is going to Galilee. You must also go there and you will see him.ā That is the message that I have brought for you.ā
8So the women went away quickly from the hole in the rock. They were very frightened, but they were also very happy. They ran to tell the disciples the angel's message. 9At that moment, Jesus met the two women and he said, āHello.ā They went near to him. They held on to his feet and they worshipped him. 10Then Jesus said to them, āDo not be afraid. Go and tell my disciples to go to Galilee. They will see me there.ā
The soldiers tell the leaders of the priests what happened
11The women went to tell the disciples Jesus' message. At the same time, some of the soldiers who had watched the rock also went into the city. The soldiers told the leaders of the priests everything that had happened at the rock. 12The leaders of the priests and the important Jews met together. They decided what they should do now. They gave the soldiers a lot of money as a bribe. 13They said to the soldiers, āWhen people ask you, you must say this: āJesus' disciples came to the rock in the night and they took his body away. We were asleep when they did this.ā 14If the Roman ruler Pilate hears about this, we will explain things to him. Do not be afraid. He will not punish you.ā
15The soldiers took the money. They told people what the Jewish leaders told them to say. Many Jews heard the soldiers' story. Even today they still believe that it happened like that.
Jesus appears to his apostles
16After this, the 11 disciples went to Galilee. They went to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. 17When they arrived at the place, they saw Jesus. Then they went down on their knees and they worshipped him. But some of the disciples were not sure that it really was Jesus. 18Jesus went near to them and he said to them, āGod has given me authority over everyone and everything. I have all authority in heaven and in this world. 19So you must go to people in every country of the world. Teach them how to become my disciples. Baptize them by the authority of God the Father, his Son and the Holy Spirit. 20Teach them to obey everything that I have taught you. You can be sure that I will be with you always. I will be with you until the end of time.ā

Jesus came alive again
1On Sunday morning, Mary Magdalene, and another woman that was called Mary, they got up really early and went to look at the cave that had Jesusās body in it. 2Suddenly there was a big earthquake. One of Godās angel messengers came down from heaven, and he rolled the big stone away from the cave, and he sat on top of it. 3His face was bright and shiny, like lightning. His clothes were really white, like snow. 4The soldiers that were guarding the cave were really frightened. They fell down on the ground like dead men, and they couldnāt move.
5Then the angel said to the women, āDonāt be frightened. I know that you are looking for Jesus, the man they killed on a cross. 6But he is not here. God made him alive again. Remember, Jesus told you that this was going to happen. Come over here and see the place where he was lying. 7Now you have to go quickly to his followers. Tell them, āJesus is alive again, and he is going to Galilee country ahead of you mob. You have to go and see him there.ā So go quickly now, and tell them.ā
8Then the women ran quickly away from that cave. They were really frightened, but they were really happy too. They got up to run to Jesusās other followers, to tell them the angelās message. 9But Jesus met them half-way and called out, āHello.ā They went up to Jesus and showed him strong respect. They even got down and held on to his feet. 10Then Jesus said, āDonāt be frightened. Go and tell my other followers to go back to Galilee country, and they will see me there.ā
The guards told the Jewish leaders what happened
11While the women were going away, some of the soldier guards went into the city and told the bosses of the Jewish ceremonies everything that happened at the cave. 12Then the ceremony bosses called a meeting with the Jewish elders. They all agreed to give the soldiers a lot of money to get them to tell a lie. 13They told the soldiers, āYou have to tell everyone, āJesusās followers came in the night, while we were asleep, and they stole his body.ā 14If anyone tells the boss, Pilate, about this, then weāll talk to him and tell him that you didnāt do anything wrong, so he will not give you any trouble.ā 15The soldiers took the money, and they told everyone that lie, like the leaders told them to say. So a lot of Jewish people heard that story, and some of them still tell that lie to other people.
Jesusās followers have to tell everyone in the world about him
16The women told Jesusās message to his 11 special workers. Then those men remembered that Jesus told them to meet him on a mountain in Galilee, so they went there.#Matthew 26:32; Mark 14:28 17They saw Jesus there, and they felt really happy, and they showed him strong respect. But some of them were thinking, āIs this really Jesus? I donāt know.ā
18Then Jesus said to them, āGod, my father, has made me boss over everything now. Iām boss over everything up in heaven. And Iām boss over everything down here on the earth. 19So go out to all the people in the world, and tell them about me. Teach those people to follow my way, and baptise them with water to show that they belong to the father, and the son, and the Holy Spirit. 20You have to teach them to do everything that I told you to do. And remember this, I will be with you all the time. I will be with you to help you, right up until the time when this world will finish.ā
