Isaiah 24

Chapter 24
The Lord will judge all people
1Understand this! The Lord is ready to destroy the earth. It will become a desert. He will spoil the ground. He will chase away all the people who live on it.
2It will be the same for all people:
priests as well as ordinary people,
masters as well as their servants,
rich ladies as well as their servant girls,
sellers as well as buyers,
people who lend money as well as those who borrow it,
rich people as well as poor people.
3The whole earth will become empty. Nothing will remain. The Lord has said that this punishment will certainly happen.
4The earth becomes dry and all the plants die. The whole world becomes weak and helpless. Its important people also become weak.
5The people who live on the earth have caused it to become unclean.
They have not obeyed God's laws.
They have turned against his teaching.
They have not obeyed the covenant that God made with them for ever.
6That is why a curse is destroying the land. The people who live on it are guilty and God is punishing them. They become fewer and fewer. Only a very few of them remain.
7There is no new wine and the vines are dying. The people who were happy to drink the wine are now sad. 8The happy sound of tambourines has stopped. The noise from parties has finished. The harps no longer make any happy music. 9People cannot drink wine, so they do not sing. When people drink beer, it seems bitter.
10The city has become so spoiled that it is useless. People have locked their houses so that nobody can go in. 11They shout in the streets because they have no wine. Nobody is happy any more, anywhere on the earth.
12The city has become a heap of stones. Its gates lie in pieces on the ground.
13This is what will happen among all the nations on the earth. Only a few people will remain, like a few olives that remain on a tree after the harvest. After people have picked the grapes off a vine, there are only a few that remain.
14Those people who are still alive sing aloud because they are happy. People who live in the west praise the Lord because he is great. 15So people who live in the east should praise the Lord too. People who live on the coast of the sea will also praise the name of the Lord, Israel's God. 16From every part of the earth, we hear songs. People sing to praise the Righteous One.
But I say, ‘I have become very weak and thin! It will be very bad for me! Evil people are turning against their friends. They deceive people more and more!’
17People everywhere on the earth, terror is ready to catch you! You will fall into a deep hole, and a trap will catch you! 18Anyone who runs away from the sound of the terror will fall into the deep hole. The trap will catch anyone who climbs out of the big hole. God has opened the windows of the sky. He has caused the foundations of the earth to shake.
19The earth has become broken into many pieces. It has torn apart. It is shaking powerfully. 20The earth is like a drunk man. It cannot walk in a straight line. It moves in all directions, like a tent in a storm. The people's sins are like a heavy weight on the earth. It cannot carry them and it will fall. It will never be able to get up again.
21At that time, the Lord will punish the powerful beings in the skies above. He will punish the kings who rule on the earth below. 22He will bring them together like prisoners in a deep hole. That will be their prison. They will be there for a time, and then he will come to punish them.
23The moon will hide its face in shame. The bright light of the sun will become dark. Yes, the Lord Almighty will become king on Mount Zion. He will rule with great power in Jerusalem. The leaders of the people will see his great glory.

The Earth Judged
1Look, the Lord is stripping the earth bare
and making it desolate.
He will twist its surface and scatter its inhabitants:
2people and priest alike,
servant and master,
female servant and mistress,
buyer and seller,
lender and borrower,
creditor and debtor.
3The earth will be stripped completely bare
and will be totally plundered,
for the Lord has spoken this message.#Is 1:20; 6:11
4The earth mourns and withers;
the world wastes away and withers;
the exalted people of the earth waste away.
5The earth is polluted by its inhabitants,#Gn 3:17; 6:5,11–12; Nm 35:33; Is 9:17; 10:6
for they have transgressed teachings,
overstepped decrees,
and broken the permanent covenant.#Gn 9:16; 17:7; Ex 31:16; Lv 24:8; 2Sm 23:5; Ps 105:10; Is 55:3; 61:8; Jr 32:40; Ezk 16:60
6Therefore a curse has consumed the earth,#Jos 23:15; Is 34:5; 43:28; Zch 5:3–4
and its inhabitants have become guilty;
the earth’s inhabitants have been burned,
and only a few survive.
7The new wine mourns;#Is 16:10; Jl 1:10,12
the vine withers.
All the carousers now groan.
8The joyful tambourines#Ex 15:20; Jdg 11:34; 1Sm 18:6; Is 30:32; Jr 31:4 have ceased.
The noise of the jubilant has stopped.
The joyful lyre has ceased.
9They no longer sing and drink wine;
beer is bitter to those who drink it.
10The city of chaos is shattered;#Is 34:11
every house is closed to entry.#Is 23:1
11In the streets they cry#24:11 Lit streets she cries for wine.
All joy grows dark;
earth’s rejoicing goes into exile.
12Only desolation remains in the city;
its gate has collapsed in ruins.
13For this is how it will be on earth
among the nations:
like a harvested olive tree,
like a gleaning after a grape harvest.#Is 17:6
14They raise their voices, they sing out;
they proclaim in the west
the majesty of the Lord.
15Therefore, in the east honor the Lord!
In the coasts and islands of the west
honor the name of the Lord,
the God of Israel.
16From the ends of the earth we hear songs:
The Splendor of the Righteous One.#Ex 9:27; Pr 21:12; Ac 3:14; 7:52; 22:14
But I said, “I waste away! I waste away!#24:16 Hb obscure
Woe is me.”
The treacherous act treacherously;
the treacherous deal very treacherously.#Is 21:2; 33:1; Jr 3:20; 5:11
17Panic, pit, and trap await you#Am 5:19
who dwell on the earth.#Jr 48:43–44
18Whoever flees at the sound of panic
will fall into a pit,
and whoever escapes from the pit
will be caught in a trap.
For the floodgates on high are opened,#Gn 7:11
and the foundations of the earth are shaken.#Ps 18:7; 46:2; Is 2:19,21; 13:13
19The earth is completely devastated;
the earth is split open;
the earth is violently shaken.
20The earth staggers like a drunkard#Is 19:14
and sways like a hut.
Earth’s rebellion weighs it down,
and it falls, never to rise again.
21On that day#Is 27:12 the Lord will punish
the army of the heights in the heights
and the kings of the ground on the ground.
22They will be gathered together
like prisoners in a pit.#Rv 20:1–3
They will be confined to a dungeon;#Rv 20:2
after many days they will be punished.
23The moon will be put to shame
and the sun disgraced,
because the Lord of Armies will reign as king
on Mount Zion in Jerusalem,
and he will display his glory
in the presence of his elders.#Is 2:2–4; 1Co 15:54
