Isaiah 23

Chapter 23
A message about Tyre
1This is a message about Tyre.
Weep aloud, you people in the great ships of Tarshish. An enemy has destroyed the port and the houses of Tyre. They heard this news in Cyprus.
2Weep quietly, you people who live on the coast of the sea. Yes, weep, you traders of Sidon city. Your sailors travelled across the sea and you became rich. 3They brought grain to you from Shihor region in Egypt. You received crops that had grown beside the Nile river. Tyre became an important city where traders from many nations came.
4Be ashamed, you people in Sidon. You have become strong because of the sea. But the sea now speaks against you! It says, ‘I have not given birth to any children. I have not taken care of any sons or daughters as a parent should do.’
5When the people in Egypt hear the news about Tyre, they will be very sad and upset.
6Travel to Tarshish! Weep aloud, you people who live on the coast of the sea. 7Tyre is a city where you had many parties. It has been there since long ago. People from this city went to live in foreign countries far away. 8It is a royal city and its traders are princes. They are famous everywhere on earth. So who decided to destroy it?
9The Lord Almighty did that! He decided to show that the pride of those people is useless. He decided to bring all those famous people down low.
10People of Tarshish, now you will have to grow your own crops. Grow them like they do beside the Nile river. Traders no longer come to Tyre to sell their things.
11The Lord has lifted his hand up over the sea. He has made kingdoms shake with fear. He has given his command against Canaan, to destroy all its strong places. #23:11 ‘Canaan’ or ‘Phoenicia’.
12He says to Sidon's people, ‘Your parties have finished! Now it will be a time of pain for you. Move away, if you can! Travel to Cyprus. But you will still not be safe there.’
13Look at what happened in Babylonia. Its people have disappeared! The Assyrian army has made it a place for wild animals to live in. Their soldiers built hills of earth against the city's walls. They climbed over and they destroyed its strong buildings. Babylon's buildings became heaps of stones.
14So weep aloud, you great ships of Tarshish. Enemies have destroyed your strong place.
15At that time people will forget Tyre for 70 years. That is how long one king lives. At the end of 70 years, there will be a change in Tyre. It will happen to them like the song about the prostitute:
16‘Prostitute that people have forgotten,
walk about the city with your harp.
Play it well. Sing many songs.
Then people will remember you again.’
17At the end of 70 years, the Lord will be kind to Tyre. People from all the nations of the world will come to Tyre to buy things. Tyre will receive their money, like the prostitute in the song. 18But the money that Tyre receives will belong to the Lord. Tyre's traders will not hide their riches or store them. Their money will buy plenty of food and beautiful clothes for people who worship the Lord.

Oracle against Tyre
1The oracle of Tyre:
Wail, ships of Tarshish, for the house is destroyed so that no one can enter;#Literally “it is destroyed from a house from entering”
it is announced to them from the land of Cyprus.
2Be still, inhabitants of the coast,
merchant of Sidon, who travels over the sea, they filled you.
3And on the great waters is the seed of Shihor,
the harvest of the Nile is its produce,
and she was the merchandise of the nations.
4Be ashamed, Sidon, for the sea,
the fortress of the sea said, saying,
“I was not in labor,
and I have not given birth,
and I have not reared young men,
brought#Or “I have brought” up young women.”
5When the report comes to Egypt, they will be in anguish at the report about#Literally “of” Tyre.
6Cross over to Tarshish!
Wail, inhabitants of the coast!
7Is this your exultant one,#Literally “this to you, exultant” her origin from the days of long ago?
Her feet brought her to dwell afar as an alien.
8Who has planned this against Tyre, the bestower of crowns,#Hebrew “crown”
whose merchants were princes,
her traders the honored ones of the earth?
9Yahweh of hosts has planned it:
to defile the pride of all glory,
to humble all the honored ones of the earth.
10Cross over your own land like the Nile, daughter of Tarshish;
there is no longer a harbor.#Hebrew “waistband” is emended to “harbor” by transposing two consonants
11He has stretched his hand out over the sea;
he has made kingdoms shake.
Yahweh has commanded concerning Canaan to destroy her fortresses.
12And he said,
“You will not continue#Literally “do again longer” to exult, crushed one, virgin#Literally “virgin of the” daughter of Sidon.
Arise, cross over to Cyprus! There will be no rest for you even there.”
13Look at the land of the Chaldeans! This people no longer exists.
Assyria destined#Literally “this people was not Assyria destined,” which could be translated “It was this people! It was not Assyria. They destined” it for wild animals.
They erected its siege towers;
they demolished its citadel fortresses.
It made her like a ruin.
14Wail, ships of Tarshish! For your fortress is destroyed.
15And this will happen on that day:
And Tyre will be forgotten seventy years,#Hebrew “year”
like the days of one king.
At the end of seventy years,#Hebrew “year” it will be for Tyre like the song of the prostitute:
16“Take a harp,
go around the city, forgotten prostitute!
Do it well, playing a stringed instrument!
Make numerous songs,#Hebrew “song” that you may be remembered.”
17And this shall happen:
at the end of seventy years,#Hebrew “year” Yahweh will visit Tyre,
and she will return to her harlot’s wages,
and she will commit fornication
with all the kingdoms of the world on the face of the earth.
18And this shall happen:
her merchandise and her harlot’s wages will be set apart for Yahweh;
it will not be stored up,
and it will not be hoarded,
but her merchandise will be for those who live before the presence#Literally “face” of Yahweh,
for eating to satiation and for fine clothing.
