Chapter 7
God destroys people and animals
1Then the Lord said to Noah, ‘Go into the boat. Take your wife and family with you. I can see that you alone do what is right, among all the people on the earth.
2Take 7 of every different kind of clean animal. Take a male and a female together. Take 2 of every different kind of dirty animal. Take a male and a female together. 3Take 7 of every kind of bird. Take males and females. Do this so that they will have young ones. Then each different kind of animal and bird will continue to live on the earth. #7:3 Clean animals are the kinds of animal that God accepts as a sacrifice. Dirty animals are those that God does not accept. God told Noah to take more clean animals so that Noah could offer sacrifices to God. There would still be animals that remained to have young ones.
4In 7 days, I will cause rain to fall on the earth. It will rain for 40 days and 40 nights. In that way, I will destroy every living thing that I have made on the earth.’
5Noah did everything that God told him to do.
6Noah was 600 years old when the deep water covered the earth. 7Noah and his wife went into the boat. His sons and their wives also went in. They all went into the boat to be safe from the deep water. 8Pairs of clean animals and dirty animals came to Noah in the boat. Also, pairs of birds and pairs of all the living things that move across the ground came to him. 9Each pair was one male and one female. They all came to Noah in the boat. #7:9 God told the animals to go to Noah. Noah and his family obeyed God. God kept them all safe. Everything happened as God had said to Noah. 10After seven days had passed, God sent the deep water to cover the earth.
11When Noah was 600 years old, on the 17th day of the second month, streams of water came up everywhere from below the earth. Also, the water in the heavens poured down on the earth. 12Rain fell on the earth for 40 days and 40 nights.
13On the day that the rains began, Noah and his wife went into the boat. Noah's 3 sons (Shem, Ham and Japheth) and their 3 wives also went in. 14With them was every different kind of wild animal and every different kind of farm animal. They also had with them every kind of living thing that moves along the ground, and every different kind of bird and other flying things. 15Pairs of every kind of animal that lived came to Noah and went into the boat. #7:15 The things that lived in the sea were safe in the deep water. See Genesis 1:21-25. 16Each pair was one male and one female. This happened in the way that God had told Noah. When they were all in the boat, the Lord shut the door.
17For 40 days, the water on the earth became deeper. The water lifted the boat high above the ground.
18The water became even deeper and completely covered the earth. The boat went safely on top of the water. 19More water came until it covered all the high mountains on the earth. 20The water still became deeper so that it was more than 6 metres higher than the tops of the mountains.
21As a result, everything that had lived on the earth now died. The birds, the livestock and the wild animals died. Every living thing that moved across the ground died, and so did all the people. 22Everything that had lived on the dry land died. Nothing could breathe any more. 23God destroyed everything that lived on the earth. He destroyed people, animals, living things that move across the ground, and birds. God removed them from the earth. Only Noah and his family, together with the animals that were in the boat, stayed alive.
24The deep water covered the earth for 150 days.

1The Lord said to Noah, “Come with all of your household into the ship, for I have seen your righteousness before me in this generation. 2You shall take seven pairs of every clean animal with you, the male and his female. Of the animals that are not clean, take two, the male and his female. 3Also of the birds of the sky, seven and seven, male and female, to keep seed alive on the surface of all the earth. 4In seven days, I will cause it to rain on the earth for forty days and forty nights. I will destroy every living thing that I have made from the surface of the ground.”
5Noah did everything that the Lord commanded him.
6Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters came on the earth. 7Noah went into the ship with his sons, his wife, and his sons’ wives, because of the floodwaters. 8Clean animals, unclean animals, birds, and everything that creeps on the ground 9went by pairs to Noah into the ship, male and female, as God commanded Noah. 10After the seven days, the floodwaters came on the earth. 11In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all the fountains of the great deep burst open, and the sky’s windows opened. 12It rained on the earth forty days and forty nights.
13In the same day Noah, and Shem, Ham, and Japheth—the sons of Noah—and Noah’s wife and the three wives of his sons with them, entered into the ship— 14they, and every animal after its kind, all the livestock after their kind, every creeping thing that creeps on the earth after its kind, and every bird after its kind, every bird of every sort. 15Pairs from all flesh with the breath of life in them went into the ship to Noah. 16Those who went in, went in male and female of all flesh, as God commanded him; then the Lord shut him in. 17The flood was forty days on the earth. The waters increased, and lifted up the ship, and it was lifted up above the earth. 18The waters rose, and increased greatly on the earth; and the ship floated on the surface of the waters. 19The waters rose very high on the earth. All the high mountains that were under the whole sky were covered. 20The waters rose fifteen cubits#7:20 A cubit is the length from the tip of the middle finger to the elbow on a man’s arm, or about 18 inches or 46 centimetres. higher, and the mountains were covered. 21All flesh died that moved on the earth, including birds, livestock, animals, every creeping thing that creeps on the earth, and every man. 22All on the dry land, in whose nostrils was the breath of the spirit of life, died. 23Every living thing was destroyed that was on the surface of the ground, including man, livestock, creeping things, and birds of the sky. They were destroyed from the earth. Only Noah was left, and those who were with him in the ship. 24The waters flooded the earth one hundred and fifty days.
