Chapter 36
Esau's family
1This is the report about Esau and his family. (Esau is also called Edom.)
2Esau took women from Canaan to be his wives. They were:
Adah, the daughter of Elon the Hittite,
Oholibamah, the daughter of Anah and granddaughter of Zibeon the Hivite,
3and Basemath, the daughter of Ishmael and sister of Nebaioth.
4Esau's wife Adah gave birth to a son called Eliphaz. Basemath gave birth to a son called Reuel. 5Oholibamah gave birth to three sons: Jeush, Jalam and Korah. These were Esau's sons that were born in the land of Canaan.
6Esau went to a land that was a long way from his brother Jacob. He took with him his wives, his sons and daughters and everyone in his house. He took his animals and all the things that he had got while he lived in Canaan. 7Esau and Jacob both had too many animals to live together in the same place. There was not enough land to give food to all their animals. 8So Esau went to live in the hills of Seir. He was also called Edom.
9This is a list of Esau's descendants, the Edomites. They lived in the hill country of Seir.
10These are the names of Esau's sons:
Eliphaz, the son of Esau's wife, Adah,
and Reuel, the son of Esau's wife, Basemath.
11The sons of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, Zepho, Gatam and Kenaz. 12Esau's son Eliphaz also had a slave wife. Her name was Timna. She gave birth to a son called Amalek. Those were the grandsons of Esau's wife, Adah.
13The sons of Reuel were Nahath, Zerah, Shammah and Mizzah. Those were grandsons of Esau's wife, Basemath. 14Esau's wife Oholibamah was the daughter of Anah and the granddaughter of Zibeon. Her sons were Jeush, Jalam and Korah.
15These were Esau's descendants who became leaders of their clans: The sons of Esau's firstborn son, Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, Zepho, Kenaz, 16Korah, Gatam and Amalek. These were the clan leaders who were descendants of Eliphaz in Edom. They were grandsons of Adah.
17The sons of Esau's son, Reuel, who became clan leaders in Edom were Nahath, Zerah, Shammah and Mizzah. They were grandsons of Esau's wife Basemath.
18The sons of Esau's wife, Oholibamah, who became clan leaders were Jeush, Jalam and Korah. Oholibamah was the daughter of Anah.
19All those were the sons of Esau and they became the leaders of their clans.
20These were the descendants of Seir the Horite. They lived in that land before Esau arrived there. They were Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah, 21Dishon, Ezer and Dishan. These descendants of Seir were leaders of the Horite clans in Edom. 22Lotan's sons were Hori and Homam. Lotan's sister was Timna. 23Shobal's sons were Alvan, Manahath, Ebal, Shepho and Onam. 24Zibeon's sons were Aiah and Anah. This was the same Anah who found a place with hot water in the wilderness when he was taking care of his father Zibeon's donkeys. 25Anah's children were Dishon and Oholibamah (his daughter). 26Dishon's sons were Hemdan, Eshban, Ithran and Keran. 27Ezer's sons were Bilhan, Zaavan and Akan. 28Dishan's sons were Uz and Aran.
29These were the leaders of the Horite clans in the land of Seir: Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah, 30Dishon, Ezer and Dishan.
31Before any kings ruled over the Israelites, these kings ruled in the land of Edom: 32Beor's son Bela became king of Edom. His city was called Dinhabah. 33When Bela died, Zerah's son Jobab became the next king. 34When Jobab died, Husham from the land of the Temanites became the next king. 35When Husham died, Bedad's son Hadad became the next king. Bedad had won the war against the Midianites in the region of Moab. Hadad's city was called Avith. 36When Hadad died, Samlah became the next king. He was from Masrekah. 37When Samlah died, Shaul became the next king. He was from Rehoboth on the river. 38When Shaul died, Akbor's son Baal-Hanan became the next king. 39When Baal-Hanan died, Hadad became the next king. His city was called Pau. Hadad's wife was Mehetabel. She was the daughter of Matred, and the granddaughter of Me-Zahab.
40These descendants of Esau were the leaders of their clans: Timna, Alvah, Jetheth, 41Oholibamah, Elah, Pinon, 42Kenaz, Teman, Mibzar, 43Magdiel and Iram. These were the leaders who lived with their families in different places in the land. Each place was called the same name as the clan leader who lived there.
All those people are the descendants of Esau, the ancestor of the Edomites.

The Descendants of Esau
1Here are the descendants of Esau, also known as Edom:
2-3Esau chose three wives from among Canaanite women: Adah (daughter of Elon the Hittite), Oholibamah # 36:2–3 Oholibamah means “a [cultic] tent-shrine.” (daughter of Anah son of Zibeon the Hivite # 36:2–3 Or “Horite” (see vv. 20–21). ), and Basemath (Ishmael’s daughter, sister of Nebaioth).
4Adah bore Eliphaz to Esau; Basemath bore Reuel; 5and Oholibamah bore Jeush, Jalam, and Korah. These are the sons who were born to Esau in the land of Canaan.
6Esau took his wives, his sons, his daughters, and his entire household, and the cattle, livestock, and possessions he had acquired in the land of Canaan, and migrated to the land of Seir # 36:6 As translated from the Syriac and explicitly stated in v. 8. The Hebrew is “to a land.” The Septuagint is “from the land of Canaan.” See Deut. 2:5; Josh. 24:4. some distance from his brother Jacob. 7Since the land where Jacob was living could not support their combined possessions and livestock, 8Esau (also known as Edom), settled in the hill country of Seir.
9This is the account of Esau, ancestor of the Edomites in the hill country of Seir:
10-13Esau’s wife Adah bore him one son Eliphaz, and Eliphaz had five sons: Teman, Omar, Zepho, Gatam, and Kenaz. Eliphaz also had a son with his concubine Timna, named Amelek.
Esau’s wife Basemath bore him one son Reuel, and Reuel had four sons: Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah.
14Esau’s wife Oholibamah, the daughter of Anah and granddaughter of Zibeon, bore Esau three sons: Jeush, Jalam, and Korah.
15-16These are the tribes # 36:15–16 Or “clans” or “chiefs,” a Hebrew word related to “thousand.” descended from Esau’s firstborn son Eliphaz whom Adah bore, and who lived in Edom: Teman, Omar, Zepho, Kenaz, Korah, Gatam, and Amalek.
17These are the tribes descended from Esau and Basemath’s son Reuel, who lived in Edom: Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah.
18These are the tribes descended from Esau’s wife Oholibamah, the daughter of Anah: Jeush, Jalam, and Korah. 19This concludes the list of the descendants of Esau (also known as Edom) and their respective tribes.
The Descendants of Seir
20-21These are the tribes descended from Seir the Horite, of the original inhabitants of Edom: Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah, Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan. All of these were the descendants of Seir.
22Lotan’s sons were Hori and Heman, and Lotan’s sister was Timna.
23Shobal’s sons were Alvan, Manahath, Ebal, Shepho, and Onam.
24Zibeon’s sons were Aiah and Anah. This is the Anah who discovered the springs in the wilderness while he was grazing the donkeys of his father Zibeon.
25Anah’s son was Dishon, and Anah’s daughter was Oholibamah.
26Dishon’s sons were Hemdan, Eshban, Ithran, and Keran.
27Ezer’s sons were Bilhan, Zaavan, and Akan.
28Dishan’s sons were Uz and Aran. 29-30This concludes the list of the Horite tribes in the land of Seir: Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah, Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan.
The Kings of Edom
31Long before the Israelites had kings, there were eight kings who reigned in Edom, 32beginning with Bela # 36:32 Some etymologists link Bela to Balaam, whose father was Beor. Bela means “swallowing up” or “gluttony.” son of Beor # 36:32 Beor means “stupid,” “dull-hearted,” “unreceptive,” “cruel,” “inhuman,” or “barbarous.” from the city of Dinhabah. # 36:32 Dinhabah means “given over to judgment.” 33When Bela died, Jobab # 36:33 There is an ancient Jewish tradition that equates Jobab with the biblical figure of Job. son of Zerah from the city of Bozrah # 36:33 Bozrah is identified as modern Buseirah. See Isa. 63:1; Amos 1:12. succeeded.
34When Jobab died, Husham from the land of Teman succeeded him.
35When Husham died, Hadad from the city of Avith, who was the son of Bedad, succeeded him. Hadad defeated the Midianites in the land of Moab.
36When Hadad died, Samlah of Masrekah succeeded him.
37When Samlah died, Shaul of Rehoboth-on-the-River # 36:37 This river is possibly Wadi el-Hesa, which formed the boundary of Edom and Moab, or possibly the Euphrates. succeeded him.
38When Shaul died, Baal-Hanan son of Achbor succeeded him.
39When Baal-Hanan son of Achbor died, Hadar # 36:39 Or “Hadad.” from the city of Pau succeeded him. (His wife was Mehetabel the daughter of Matred, Me-Zahab’s granddaughter.)
40-42These are the tribes of Esau according to their clans and regions: Timna, Alvah, Jetheth, Oholibamah, Elah, Pinon, Kenaz, Teman, Mibzar, 43Magdiel, and Iram. This concludes the list of the Edomite tribes who settled and possessed land in different regions of their country. All the Edomites descended from Esau.
