Chapter 31
Bezalel and Oholiab
1Then the Lord said to Moses, 2‘Look! I have chosen Bezalel, the son of Uri and the grandson of Hur. He belongs to the tribe of Judah. 3I have filled him with my Spirit so that he has special skills. He knows how to make many kinds of things. 4He can draw pictures of beautiful things that he wants to make. Then he uses gold, silver or bronze to make them. 5He knows how to cut valuable stones and make them look beautiful. He knows how to cut wood into different shapes. He is very clever at all kinds of work.
6I have also chosen Oholiab to help Bezalel. Oholiab is the son of Ahisamach. He belongs to the tribe of Dan. I have also helped all the workers who have special skills. They will be able to make everything that I have commanded you to make. 7They will make these things:
the Tent of Meeting,
the Covenant Box with its special lid,
the other things that will be in the tabernacle.
8Those things include:
the special table with all its tools,
the pure gold lampstand with all its tools,
the altar for incense,
9the altar for burnt offerings with all its tools,
the large bowl for water and its base,
10the beautiful clothes for Aaron the priest,
the clothes for his sons as they serve as priests,
11the special oil to show that things belong to me,
and the sweet incense for the Holy Place.
The workers must make all these things in the way that I have commanded you.’
The Sabbath day
12Then the Lord said to Moses, 13‘Say to the Israelites, “You must keep my Sabbath days as special days. This will help you and your descendants to remember that you belong to me. You will remember that I, the Lord, have chosen you to be my people.
14The Sabbath day must be special for you, because it is a holy day. If anyone does not make the Sabbath a special day, you must punish him with death. If anyone does any work on a Sabbath day, he can no longer belong to my people. 15You may work for six days each week, but the seventh day is a day of rest. It is a holy day that is special to me, the Lord. If anyone does any work on a Sabbath day, you must punish him with death. 16The Israelites must always keep the Sabbath as a special day. They must obey the rules for the Sabbath day. Those rules are part of my covenant with my people that continues for ever. 17It will always be a sign that I have chosen the Israelites to be my people. You will remember that the Lord made the heavens and the earth in six days. Then, on the seventh day, he stopped working and he rested.” ’
18The Lord finished speaking to Moses on Sinai mountain. Then he gave Moses the two flat stones with the special commands that God himself had written on them.

The Lord Chooses Bezalel and Oholiab
(Exodus 35.30—36.1)
1The Lord said to Moses:
2I have chosen Bezalel#31.2 Bezalel: Hebrew “Bezalel, son of Uri and grandson of Hur.” from the Judah tribe to make the sacred tent and its furnishings. 3-5Not only have I filled him with my Spirit, but I have given him wisdom and made him a skilled craftsman who can create objects of art with gold, silver, bronze, precious stones, and wood. 6I have appointed Oholiab#31.6 Oholiab: Hebrew “Oholiab son of Ahisamach.” from the tribe of Dan to work with him, and I have also given skills to those who will help them make everything exactly as I have commanded you: 7-11the sacred tent with its furnishings, the sacred chest with its place of mercy, the table with all that is on it, the lamp with its equipment, the incense altar, the altar for sacrifices with its equipment, the bronze bowl with its stand, the beautiful priestly clothes for Aaron and his sons, the oil for dedication and ordination services, and the sweet-smelling incense for the holy place.
Laws for the Sabbath
12-13Moses told the Israelites that the Lord had said:
The Sabbath belongs to me. Now I command you and your descendants to always obey the laws of the Sabbath. By doing this, you will know that I have chosen you as my own. 14-15#Ex 20.8-11; 23.12; 34.21; 35.2; Lv 23.3; Dt 5.12-14. Keep the Sabbath holy. You have six days to do your work, but the Sabbath is mine, and it must remain a day of rest. If you work on the Sabbath, you will no longer be part of my people, and you will be put to death.
16Every generation of Israelites must respect the Sabbath. 17#Ex 20.11. This day will always serve as a reminder, both to me and to the Israelites, that I made the heavens and the earth in six days, then on the seventh day I rested and relaxed.
18When God had finished speaking to Moses on Mount Sinai, he gave him the two flat stones on which he had written all his laws with his own hand.
