Isaiah 22
22
A Warning of Destruction of Jerusalem
1The oracle concerning the valley of vision.
What do you mean that you have gone up,
all of you, to the housetops,
2you that are full of shoutings,
tumultuous city, exultant town?
Your slain are not slain by the sword,
nor are they dead in battle.
3Your rulers have all fled together;
they were captured without the use of a bow.#22.3 Or without their bows
All of you who were found were captured,
though they had fled far away.#22.3 Gk Syr Vg: Heb fled from far away
4Therefore I said:
Look away from me,
let me weep bitter tears;
do not try to comfort me
for the destruction of my beloved people.
5For the Lord God of hosts has a day
of tumult and trampling and confusion
in the valley of vision,
a battering down of walls
and a cry for help to the mountains.
6Elam bore the quiver
with chariots and cavalry,#22.6 Meaning of Heb uncertain
and Kir uncovered the shield.
7Your choicest valleys were full of chariots,
and the cavalry took their stand at the gates.
8He has taken away the covering of Judah.
On that day you looked to the weapons of the House of the Forest, 9and you saw that there were many breaches in the city of David, and you collected the waters of the lower pool. 10You counted the houses of Jerusalem, and you broke down the houses to fortify the wall. 11You made a reservoir between the two walls for the water of the old pool. But you did not look to him who did it, or have regard for him who planned it long ago.
12In that day the Lord God of hosts
called to weeping and mourning,
to baldness and putting on sackcloth;
13but instead there was joy and festivity,
killing oxen and slaughtering sheep,
eating meat and drinking wine.
“Let us eat and drink,
for tomorrow we die.”
14The Lord of hosts has revealed himself in my ears:
Surely this iniquity will not be forgiven you until you die,
says the Lord God of hosts.
Denunciation of Self-Seeking Officials
15Thus says the Lord God of hosts: Come, go to this steward, to Shebna, who is master of the household, and say to him: 16What right do you have here? Who are your relatives here, that you have cut out a tomb here for yourself, cutting a tomb on the height, and carving a habitation for yourself in the rock? 17The Lord is about to hurl you away violently, my fellow. He will seize firm hold on you, 18whirl you round and round, and throw you like a ball into a wide land; there you shall die, and there your splendid chariots shall lie, O you disgrace to your master's house! 19I will thrust you from your office, and you will be pulled down from your post.
20On that day I will call my servant Eliakim son of Hilkiah, 21and will clothe him with your robe and bind your sash on him. I will commit your authority to his hand, and he shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and to the house of Judah. 22I will place on his shoulder the key of the house of David; he shall open, and no one shall shut; he shall shut, and no one shall open. 23I will fasten him like a peg in a secure place, and he will become a throne of honor to his ancestral house. 24And they will hang on him the whole weight of his ancestral house, the offspring and issue, every small vessel, from the cups to all the flagons. 25On that day, says the Lord of hosts, the peg that was fastened in a secure place will give way; it will be cut down and fall, and the load that was on it will perish, for the Lord has spoken.

Oracle against Jerusalem
1The oracle of the valley of vision:
What business do you have going#Literally “What to you then that you have gone” up, all of you, to the roofs,
2noisy,#Literally “full of noises” tumultuous city,
exultant town?
Your slain are not slain by the sword,
nor are they dead from battle.
3All of your rulers have fled together without a bow;
all of you who were found#Literally “your found ones” were captured.
They were captured together;
they had fled far away.
4Therefore I said,
“Look away from me,
let me weep bitterly;#Literally “be bitter in weeping”
you must not insist on comforting me
for the destruction of the daughter of my people.”
5For the Lord Yahweh of hosts has a day of tumult and trampling and confusion#These three Hebrew words are alliterative: mehûmâûmeḇûsâûmeḇûḵâ in the valley of vision,
a tearing down of walls#Hebrew “wall” and a cry for help to the mountains.#Hebrew “mountain”
6And Elam lifted up the quiver,
with chariots#Hebrew “chariot” of men#Hebrew “man” and cavalry.
And Kir uncovered the shield.
7And this happened:
the choicest of your valleys were full of chariots,#Hebrew “chariot”
and the cavalry confidently stood at the gate.
8And he uncovered the covering of Judah.
And you looked, on that day, to the weapons#Hebrew “weapon” of the House of the Forest,
9and you saw that the breaches in the walls of the city of David were many,
and you gathered the waters of the lower pool.
10And you counted the houses of Jerusalem,
and you broke down the houses to fortify the wall.
11And you made a reservoir between the walls for the waters of the old pool,
but you did not look to its maker,
and you did not see the one who created it long ago.#Literally “its creator from far away”
12And the Lord, Yahweh of hosts, called on that day
for weeping and mourning,
and for baldness and girding with#Literally “of” sackcloth.
13But look! Joy and gladness,
the killing of oxen#Hebrew “ox” and the slaughtering of sheep,
the eating of meat and the drinking of wine!
“Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die!”
14And it was revealed in my ears by Yahweh of hosts:
“Surely this sin will not be atoned for you until you die!”
says the Lord, Yahweh of hosts.
Oracle regarding Shebna
15The Lord, Yahweh of hosts, says this:
“Go! Go to this steward, to Shebna,
who is over the house:
16‘What business do you have#Literally “to you” here,
and who do you have#Literally “to you” here,
that you have cut a grave cutting here for yourself,
carving his grave on the height,
a dwelling place for him in the rock?
17Look! Yahweh is about to really hurl#Literally “hurl a hurling” you, man!
And he is about to grasp you firmly;
18he will wind a winding tightly around you like a ball, to a wide land.#Literally “land broad of sides”
There you shall die,
and there the chariots of your splendor will be,
disgrace to your master’s house!
19And I will push you from your office,
and he will throw you down from your position.
20And this shall happen:
On that day I will call to my servant, Eliakim son of Hilkiah,
21and I will clothe him with your tunic,
and I will bind your sash firmly about him,
and I will put your authority into his hand,
and he shall be like a father to the inhabitants#Hebrew “inhabitant” of Jerusalem
and to the house of Judah.
22And I will put the key of the house of David on his shoulder,
and he shall open and no one will be able to shut;
and he shall shut and no one will be able to open.
23And I will drive him in like a peg into a secure place,
and he will become like a throne of glory to the house of his father.
24And they will hang all of the heaviness of his father’s house on him,
the offspring and the offshoot,
all of the small vessels,
from the bowls to the jars.#Literally “vessels of the bowls to all of the vessels of the jars”
25On that day, declares#Literally “declaration of” Yahweh of hosts, the peg that was driven will move away into a secure place, and it will be cut down and fall, and the load that was on her will be cut off. For Yahweh has spoken.’ ”
