Matthew 17
17
1Six days later Jesus took Peter, James and his brother John, with him and they went up a high mountain to be by themselves. 2He was transformed in front of them. His face was shining like the sun. His clothes turned white as light. 3Then suddenly Moses and Elijah appeared before them, talking together with Jesus.
4Peter spoke up, saying to Jesus, “Lord, it's really good to be here. If you want I'll make three shelters—one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
5While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them. A voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is my son whom I love, who pleases me. Listen to him.” 6When they heard this, the disciples fell down on their faces, absolutely terrified. 7Jesus went over to them and touched them. “Get up,” he told them. “Don't be afraid.” 8When they looked up they didn't see anybody there except Jesus.
9As they descended the mountain Jesus gave them strict instructions. “Don't tell anybody what you saw until the Son of man has risen from the dead,” he told them.
10“So why do the religious teachers say that Elijah has to come first?” his disciples asked.
11“It's true that Elijah comes to put everything in place,” Jesus replied, 12“but I tell you that Elijah has already come and yet people didn't recognize who he was. They did whatever they felt like to him. In the same way the Son of man will also suffer at their hands.” 13Then the disciples realized that Jesus was referring to John the Baptist.
14When they approached the crowd, a man came to Jesus, and kneeled before him. 15“Lord, please have mercy on my son,” he said. “He loses his mind#17:15. Literally, “moonstruck.” This parallels the English term “lunatic” from the Latin “lunaticus.” and suffers such terrible fits that he often falls in the fire or into water. 16I brought him to your disciples but they couldn't heal him.”
17“You people#17:17. Literally, “generation.” refuse to trust me, and are so corrupt!” Jesus responded. “How long do I have to remain here with you? How long do I have to put up with you? Bring him here to me!” 18Jesus confronted the demon and it left the boy, and he was healed straight away.
19Later the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked him, “Why couldn't we drive it out?”
20“Because you don't trust enough,” Jesus told them. “I tell you, even if your trust was as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it would move. Nothing would be impossible for you.” 21#17:21. Verse 21 is not in the earliest manuscripts.
22As they were walking together through Galilee, Jesus told them, “The Son of man is going to be betrayed and people will have power#17:22. Literally, “betrayed into the hands of men.” over him. 23They will kill him, but on the third day he will rise again.” The disciples were filled with sadness.
24When they arrived at Capernaum, those who were in charge of collecting the half-shekel Temple tax came to Peter and asked him, “Your teacher does pay the half-shekel tax, doesn't he?”
25“Yes, of course,” Peter replied.
When he returned to where they were staying, Jesus anticipated the issue. “What do you think, Simon?” Jesus asked him. “Do the kings of this world collect their taxes and duties from their own sons or from others?”
26“From others,” Peter replied. So Jesus told him, “In that case the sons are exempt. 27But to avoid giving offense to anyone, go to the lake, and throw out a fishing line with a hook. Pull in the first fish you catch, and when you open its mouth there you'll find a stater coin.#17:27. Worth one shekel. The Temple tax of the time was half a shekel per person. Take the coin and give it to them for both me and you.”

The true glory of Jesus
(Mark 9.2-13; Luke 9.28-36)
1Six days later Jesus took Peter and the brothers James and John with him. They went up on a very high mountain where they could be alone.#2 P 1.17,18. 2There in front of the disciples, Jesus was completely changed. His face was shining like the sun, and his clothes became white as light.
3All at once Moses and Elijah were there talking with Jesus. 4So Peter said to him, “Lord, it is good for us to be here! Let us make three shelters, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
5While Peter was still speaking, the shadow of a bright cloud passed over them. From the cloud a voice said, “This is my own dear Son, and I am pleased with him. Listen to what he says!”#Gn 22.2; Ps 2.7; Is 42.1; Mt 3.17; 12.18; Mk 1.11; Lk 3.22; Dt 18.15. 6When the disciples heard the voice, they were so afraid that they fell flat on the ground. 7But Jesus came over and touched them. He said, “Get up and don't be afraid!” 8When they opened their eyes, they saw only Jesus.
9On their way down from the mountain, Jesus warned his disciples not to tell anyone what they had seen until after the Son of Man had been raised from death.
10The disciples asked Jesus, “Don't the teachers of the Law of Moses say that Elijah must come before the Messiah does?”#Ml 4.5.
11Jesus told them, “Elijah certainly will come and get everything ready. 12In fact, he has already come. But the people did not recognize him and treated him just as they wanted to. They will soon make the Son of Man suffer in the same way.”#Mt 11.14. 13Then the disciples understood that Jesus was talking to them about John the Baptist.
Jesus heals a boy
(Mark 9.14-29; Luke 9.37-43a)
14Jesus and his disciples returned to the crowd. A man knelt in front of him 15and said, “Lord, have pity on my son! He has a bad case of epilepsy and often falls into a fire or into water. 16I brought him to your disciples, but none of them could heal him.”
17Jesus said, “You people are too stubborn to have any faith! How much longer must I be with you? Why do I have to put up with you? Bring the boy here.” 18Then Jesus spoke sternly to the demon. It went out of the boy, and at once he was healed.
19Later the disciples went to Jesus in private and asked him, “Why couldn't we force out the demon?”
20-21Jesus replied:#Mt 21.21; Mk 11.23; 1 Co 13.2.
It is because you don't have enough faith! But I can promise you this. If you had faith no larger than a mustard seed, you could tell this mountain to move from here to there. And it would. Everything would be possible for you.#17.20,21 for you: Some manuscripts add, “But the only way to force out that kind of demon is by praying and going without eating.”
Jesus again speaks about his death
(Mark 9.30-32; Luke 9.43b-45)
22While Jesus and his disciples were going from place to place in Galilee, he told them, “The Son of Man will be handed over to people 23who will kill him. But three days later he will rise to life.” All this made the disciples very sad.
Paying the temple tax
24When Jesus and the others arrived in Capernaum, the collectors for the temple tax came to Peter and asked, “Does your teacher pay the temple tax?”#Ex 30.13-15; 38.26.
25“Yes, he does,” Peter answered.
After they had returned home, Jesus went up to Peter and asked him, “Simon, what do you think? Do the kings of this earth collect taxes and fees from their own people or from foreigners?”#17.25 from their own people or from foreigners: Or “from their children or from others”.
26Peter answered, “From foreigners.”
Jesus replied, “Then their own people#17.26 From foreigners…their own people: Or “From other people…their children”. don't have to pay. 27But we don't want to cause trouble. So go and cast a line into the lake and pull out the first fish you hook. Open its mouth, and you will find a coin. Use it to pay your taxes and mine.”
