Isaiah 31
31
1Tragedy is coming to those who appeal to Egypt for help, depending on their horses and trusting in all their chariots and charioteers! They don't look to the Holy One of Israel for help; they don't ask the Lord for advice. 2Yet he's also wise! He will bring disaster and won't withdraw his orders. He will take action against this wicked nation#31:2. “Wicked nation”: literally, “house of evil”—referring particularly to the royal house who led the nation in seeking an alliance with Egypt. and the evil people who help them. 3The Egyptians are only human beings—they're not God! Their horses are only physical, not spiritual. When the Lord lifts up his hand to attack, those who came to help will stumble, and those who are helped will fall. They will all die together.
4This is what the Lord told me: It's like a young lion growling as it stands over its prey. Even though a lot of shepherds come to protest, it's not frightened off by their shouting or intimidated by all their noise. In the same way the Lord Almighty will come down to fight on Mount Zion. 5Like birds that hover above, so the Lord Almighty will take care of Jerusalem. He will protect it and save it; he will pass over#31:5. “Pass over”: the same word as used for the Passover. it and rescue it.
6Come back, Israelites, to the one you so blatantly rebelled against. 7For at that time every one of you will throw away all the idols of silver and gold made by your own sinful hands. 8The Assyrians will be killed by the sword of one who is not a man. They will destroyed by the sword of one who is not mortal. They will run away at the sight of the sword,#31:8. The sword of the Lord. and the young Assyrian men will be taken away as slave laborers. 9Their “rock”#31:9. Thought to refer to the Assyrian king. will be scared to death, and their officers will be terrified and in panic at the sight of the battle flag, declares the Lord, who has his fire in Zion, and his furnace in Jerusalem.

Isaiah 31

The Egyptians are No Help
1Ah! Those who go down to Egypt for help!
They rely on horses
and trust in chariots because they are many,
and in horsemen because they are very numerous,
and they do not look to the holy one of Israel,
and they do not consult Yahweh.
2And indeed, he is wise, and he brings disaster,
and he does not remove his words,
and he will rise against the house of evildoers
and against the help of workers of iniquity.
3And the Egyptians are human and not God,
and their horses are flesh and not spirit.
And Yahweh stretches out his hand,
and the helper will stumble,
and the one being helped will fall,
and together all of them will come to an end.#Or “perish”
4For Yahweh said this to me:
“As which a lion growls
and a young lion over its prey
when a full group#Literally “fullness” of shepherds is called against him,
it is not terrified by their voice,
and to their noise it does not respond,
so Yahweh of hosts will come down to fight upon Mount Zion
and upon its hill.
5Like birds flying overhead, so Yahweh of hosts will protect Jerusalem;
he will protect and deliver it;
he will pass over and rescue it.
6Turn back to the one against whom the sons of Israel have made deep rebellion.
7For on that day, each one will reject his idols of silver
and his idols of gold which your hands have made in sin for you.
8And Assyria shall fall by a sword not of a man,
and a sword not of a human shall devour him;
and he shall flee from the sword,
and his young men shall be put to forced labor.
9And his rock will pass over because of terror,
and his officers will be terrified because of the flag,”
declares#Literally “declaration of” Yahweh,
who has a fire in Zion
and has a furnace in Jerusalem.
