Isaiah 13
13
1This is the message Isaiah, son of Amoz, received#13:1. Literally, “saw.” about Babylon.
2Set up a banner on a bare hilltop; shout out to them; wave your hand to encourage them to enter the palaces of princes.#13:2. “Palaces of princes”: literally, “gates of the nobles.” 3I have ordered the ones I have chosen to attack; I have called my warriors to execute my furious judgment and to celebrate my triumph.
4A noise comes from the mountains, sounding like that of a huge crowd! It's the roaring sound from the kingdoms, from nations gathering together! The Lord Almighty is calling up an army for war. 5They are coming from distant lands, from beyond the far horizons—the Lord and the weapons of his fury—coming to destroy the whole country.
6Howl in fear, for the day of the Lord is approaching—the time when the Almighty destroys. 7Everyone's hands will fall limp, and everyone will lose their minds in panic. 8They will be terrified; pain and anguish will seize them; they will suffer like a woman giving birth. They will look in shock at each other, their faces burning in fear. 9Look! The day of the Lord is coming—cruel, with fury and fierce anger—to devastate the land and to wipe out its sinners. 10The stars in the constellations of heaven above will not shine. When the sun rises it will stay dark. The moon will give no light.
11I will punish the world for its evil, and the wicked for their sin, says the Lord.#13:11. “Says the Lord.” Supplied for clarity. I will put an end to the conceit of the arrogant, and I will humiliate tyrants and their pride. 12I will make people scarcer than pure gold, rarer than the gold of Ophir. 13So I will shake the heavens and make the earth jump out of its place because of the fury of the Lord Almighty, at the time when his anger burns.
14Like a gazelle being hunted, or like sheep without a shepherd, the Babylonians#13:14. “The Babylonians”: supplied for clarity. will return to their own people, they will run away to their own land. 15Anyone who is captured will be stabbed to death; anyone who is caught will be killed by the sword. 16Their little children will be dashed to pieces as they watch, their houses will be looted, and their wives will be raped.
17I'm going to get the Medes to attack them, people who don't care about silver or gold. 18Their bows will slaughter their young men; they will show no mercy to babies; they will have no pity on children. 19Babylon, the most marvelous city of any kingdom, the greatest pride of the Babylonian people, will be demolished by God like Sodom and Gomorrah. 20No one will ever live in Babylon again. It will be deserted—no desert nomad will set up a tent there, no shepherd will bring a flock to rest there. 21Only desert animals will make their homes there, and the ruined houses will be inhabited by wild dogs. Owls will live there, and wild goats will leap around. 22Hyenas will howl in her fortresses and jackals in her lavish palaces. Babylon's time is coming soon—they will not last much longer.

Babylon Will Be Punished
1 #
Is 47.1-15; Jr 50.1—51.64. This is the message#13.1 message: See the note at 1.1. that I was given about Babylon:
2From high on a barren hill
give a signal, shout the orders,
and point the way
to enter the gates
of Babylon's proud rulers.
3The Lord has commanded
his very best warriors
and his proud heroes
to show how angry he is.
4Listen to the noisy crowds
on the mountains!
Kingdoms and nations
are joining forces.
The Lord All-Powerful
is bringing together
an army for battle.
5From a distant land
the Lord is coming
fierce and furious—
he brings his weapons
to destroy the whole earth.
6 #
Jl 1.15. Cry and weep!
The day is coming
when the mighty Lord
will bring destruction.
* 7All people will be terrified.
Hands will grow limp;
courage will melt away.
8Everyone will tremble with pain
like a woman giving birth;
they will stare at each other
with horror on their faces.
There Will Be No Mercy
9I, the Lord,
will show no mercy or pity
when that time comes.
In my anger I will destroy
the earth and every sinner
who lives on it.

from the stars in the sky;

and the moon

11I will punish this evil world
and its people
because of their sins.
I will crush the horrible pride
of those who are cruel.
12Survivors will be harder to find
than the purest gold.
13I, the Lord All-Powerful,
am terribly angry—
I will make the sky tremble
and the earth shake loose.
14Everyone will run
to their homelands,
just as hunted deer run,
and sheep scatter
when they have no shepherd.
15Those men who are captured
will be killed by a sword.
16They will see their children
beaten against rocks,
their homes robbed,
and their wives abused.
17The Medes#13.17 Medes: People of a nation northeast of Babylonia, which became part of the Persian Empire. can't be bought off
with silver or gold,
and I'm sending them
to attack Babylonia.
18Their arrows will slaughter
the young men;
no pity will be shown
to babies and children.
The Lord Will Destroy Babylon
19 #
Gn 19.24. The city of Babylon
is glorious and powerful,
the pride of the nation.
But it will be like the cities
of Sodom and Gomorrah
after I, the Lord,
destroyed them.
20No one will live in Babylon.
Even nomads won't camp nearby,
and shepherds won't let
their sheep rest there.
