1 Corinthians 5
5
1I hear reports that sexual immorality is happening among you, immorality that even the foreigners don't practice. A man is living with his father's wife! 2You are so proud of yourselves! Shouldn't you have wept with sadness, and excluded the man who did this? 3Even though I'm not physically present there, I am there in spirit and just as if I were there I've already made my judgment of the one who has done this. 4When you meet together in the name of the Lord Jesus, I'll be there with you in spirit and with the power of our Lord Jesus. 5Hand over this man to Satan so his sinful nature may be destroyed and he himself be saved on the day of the Lord.#5:5. This is not to suggest that Satan “cooperates” in the salvation process. This “handing over to Satan” is figurative language that is meant to indicate that the one involved is allowed to experience the consequences of his sin so that he may choose to return and be saved.
6You shouldn't be proud about this. Don't you know that it only takes a little yeast to make the whole batch of dough rise?#5:6. In other words, it only takes a small amount of sin to infect the whole church. 7Get rid of this old yeast so that you can be a new batch of dough to make bread without yeast. Christ our Passover lamb has been sacrificed. 8So let us celebrate this festival#5:8. At the time of the Passover the Jews ate bread made without yeast, and threw out all the yeast from their homes. Paul is using this imagery to say that the yeast of sin needs to be removed just as the symbol of sin (yeast) was removed at the time of the sacrifice of the Passover., not with old yeast or the yeast of evil and wickedness, but with the bread made without yeast, the bread of sincerity and truth.
9In my previous letter I wrote that you should not associate with immoral people. 10I wasn't referring to the immoral people of this world, those who are greedy and cheat others, or those who worship idols, otherwise you'd have to leave this world! 11What I meant when I wrote was that you shouldn't associate with anyone who is called a Christian who is immoral or greedy or worships idols; or who is abusive or a drunkard or who cheats others. Don't even share a meal with anyone like that! 12It's not my place to judge those outside the church. But shouldn't you judge those who are inside the church? 13God judges those that are outside the church. “Expel the wicked from among you.”#5:13. This is a quotation from Deuteronomy, repeated in several places: Deuteronomy 13:5, Deuteronomy 17:7, Deuteronomy 19:19, Deuteronomy 22:24, Deuteronomy 24:7.

Immoral Church Members
1It is widely reported that there is sexual immorality # 1Th 4:3 among you, and the kind of sexual immorality that is not even tolerated # Other mss read named among the Gentiles # Gl 1:16 — a man is living with his father’s wife. # Lv 18:8; Dt 22:30; 27:20 2And you are inflated with pride, instead of filled with grief # Lk 6:25 so that he who has committed this act might be removed from your congregation. 3For though I am absent in body but present in spirit, # Col 2:5; 1Th 2:17 I have already decided about the one who has done this thing as though I were present. 4When you are assembled in the name of our Lord Jesus with my spirit and with the power of our Lord Jesus, 5turn that one over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, # 1Jn 5:16 so that his spirit may be saved in the Day of the Lord. # Mt 25:13; Ac 2:20; Php 1:6
6Your boasting is not good. Don’t you know that a little yeast # Lk 13:21; Gl 5:9 permeates the whole batch of dough? # Lk 13:21 7Clean out the old yeast so that you may be a new batch. You are indeed unleavened, for Christ our Passover # Ex 12 has been sacrificed. # Other mss add for us 8Therefore, let us observe the feast, not with old yeast or with the yeast of malice and evil # Mk 7:22; Rm 1:29 but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
Church Discipline
9I wrote to you in a letter not to associate # 2Th 3:14 with sexually immoral people. # 1Co 6:9; Eph 5:5; 1Tm 1:10; Heb 12:16; 13:4; Rv 21:8; 22:15 10I did not mean the immoral people of this world or the greedy # Eph 5:5 and swindlers # Lk 18:11 or idolaters; otherwise you would have to leave the world. # Jn 17:6 11But now I am writing # Or now I wrote you not to associate with anyone who claims to be a believer # Lit anyone named a brother # 2Th 3:6 who is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or verbally abusive, a drunkard # 1Co 6:10 or a swindler. Do not even eat with such a person. 12For what business is it of mine to judge # Lk 6:37 outsiders? Don’t you judge those who are inside? 13But God judges outsiders. Put away the evil person from among yourselves. # Dt 17:7 # Dt 17:7
