Psalms 97

God Rules Over All
A psalm of David when his kingdom was established # 97 This inscription is from the Septuagint.
1Yahweh now reigns as King! Let everyone rejoice!
His rule extends everywhere, even to distant lands,
and the islands of the sea, let them all be glad.
2Clouds both dark and mysterious now surround him. # 97:2 See Deut. 4:11; 5:22.
His throne of glory rests upon
a foundation of righteousness and justice.
3All around him burns a blazing glory-fire consuming all his foes.
4When his lightning strikes, it lights up the world.
People are wide-eyed as they tremble and shake.
5Mountains melt away like wax in a fire
when the Lord of all the earth draws near.
6Heaven’s messengers preach righteousness, and
people everywhere see God’s glory in the sky!
7Shame covers all who boast in other gods, for they worship idols.
For all the supernatural powers once worshiped
the true and living God.
8But God’s Zion-people are content,
for they know and hear the truth.
The people of praise rejoice over all your judgments, O Lord!
9For you are King-God, the Most High God over all the earth.
You are exalted above every supernatural power!
10Listen, you lovers of God! Hate evil,
for God can keep you from wrong
and protect you from the power of wickedness.
11For he sows seeds of light within his devoted lovers,
and seeds of joy burst forth for the lovers of God!
12So be glad and continue to give him thanks,
for God’s holiness is seen in everything he does.

Psalm 97
1The Lord rules. Let the earth be glad.
Let countries that are far away be full of joy.
2Clouds and thick darkness surround him.
His rule is built on what is right and fair.
3The Lord sends fire ahead of him.
It burns up his enemies all around him.
4His lightning lights up the world.
The earth sees it and trembles.
5The mountains melt like wax when the Lord is near.
He is the Lord of the whole earth.
6The heavens announce that what he does is right.
All people everywhere see his glory.
7All who worship statues of gods or brag about them are put to shame.
All you gods, worship the Lord!
8Zion hears about it and is filled with joy.
Lord, the villages of Judah are glad
because of how you judge.
9 Lord, you are the Most High God.
You rule over the whole earth.
You are honored much more than all gods.
10Let those who love the Lord hate evil.
He guards the lives of those who are faithful to him.
He saves them from the power of sinful people.
11Good things come to those who do what is right.
Joy comes to those whose hearts are honest.
12You who are godly, be glad because of what the Lord has done.
Praise him, because his name is holy.
