Psalms 97

God Rules Over All
A psalm of David when his kingdom was established # 97 This inscription is from the Septuagint.
1Yahweh now reigns as King! Let everyone rejoice!
His rule extends everywhere, even to distant lands,
and the islands of the sea, let them all be glad.
2Clouds both dark and mysterious now surround him. # 97:2 See Deut. 4:11; 5:22.
His throne of glory rests upon
a foundation of righteousness and justice.
3All around him burns a blazing glory-fire consuming all his foes.
4When his lightning strikes, it lights up the world.
People are wide-eyed as they tremble and shake.
5Mountains melt away like wax in a fire
when the Lord of all the earth draws near.
6Heaven’s messengers preach righteousness, and
people everywhere see God’s glory in the sky!
7Shame covers all who boast in other gods, for they worship idols.
For all the supernatural powers once worshiped
the true and living God.
8But God’s Zion-people are content,
for they know and hear the truth.
The people of praise rejoice over all your judgments, O Lord!
9For you are King-God, the Most High God over all the earth.
You are exalted above every supernatural power!
10Listen, you lovers of God! Hate evil,
for God can keep you from wrong
and protect you from the power of wickedness.
11For he sows seeds of light within his devoted lovers,
and seeds of joy burst forth for the lovers of God!
12So be glad and continue to give him thanks,
for God’s holiness is seen in everything he does.

1The Lord reigns! Let the earth be glad, and distant lands be full of joy!
2He is surrounded by clouds and thick darkness; his throne is founded on justice and right.
3Flames proceed him, burning up his enemies on every side.
4His flashes of lightning light up the world; the earth watches and trembles.
5The mountains melt like wax in the presence of the Lord, before the Lord of all the earth.
6The heavens proclaim his goodness; everyone sees his glory.
7All those who worship idols are humiliated, those who are proud of their idols—for all “gods” bow down before him.
8Jerusalem hears this and celebrates; all the towns of Judah are happy because of your judgments, Lord.
9For you, Lord, are the highest of all, ruling over the whole earth; your position is far above any other god.
10You who love the Lord, hate evil! He protects the lives of those who are faithful to him, and saves them from the power of wicked people.
11Light shines#97:11. Or “is sown.” on those who do good, giving joy to those who live right.
12Be happy in the Lord, you who do right, and thank him for his holy nature!
