Psalms 97

God Rules Over All
A psalm of David when his kingdom was established # 97 This inscription is from the Septuagint.
1Yahweh now reigns as King! Let everyone rejoice!
His rule extends everywhere, even to distant lands,
and the islands of the sea, let them all be glad.
2Clouds both dark and mysterious now surround him. # 97:2 See Deut. 4:11; 5:22.
His throne of glory rests upon
a foundation of righteousness and justice.
3All around him burns a blazing glory-fire consuming all his foes.
4When his lightning strikes, it lights up the world.
People are wide-eyed as they tremble and shake.
5Mountains melt away like wax in a fire
when the Lord of all the earth draws near.
6Heaven’s messengers preach righteousness, and
people everywhere see God’s glory in the sky!
7Shame covers all who boast in other gods, for they worship idols.
For all the supernatural powers once worshiped
the true and living God.
8But God’s Zion-people are content,
for they know and hear the truth.
The people of praise rejoice over all your judgments, O Lord!
9For you are King-God, the Most High God over all the earth.
You are exalted above every supernatural power!
10Listen, you lovers of God! Hate evil,
for God can keep you from wrong
and protect you from the power of wickedness.
11For he sows seeds of light within his devoted lovers,
and seeds of joy burst forth for the lovers of God!
12So be glad and continue to give him thanks,
for God’s holiness is seen in everything he does.

1 Hashem reigneth; let ha'aretz rejoice; let the multitude of isles thereof be glad.
2Anan and darkness are round about Him; tzedek and mishpat are the foundation of His kisse.
3Eish goeth before Him, and burneth up His enemies on every side.
4His lightnings light up the tevel; ha'aretz saw, and trembled.
5The harim melted like wax at the presence of Hashem, at the presence of Adon kol HaAretz.
6HaShomayim declare His tzedek, and kol ha'amim see His kavod.
7Shamed be all they that serve pesel, that boast themselves of elilim; worship Him, kol elohim.
8Tziyon heard, and was glad; and the banot Yehudah rejoiced because of Thy mishpatim, Hashem.
9For Thou, Hashem, art Elyon above kol ha'aretz; Thou art exalted far above kol elohim.
10Ye that love Hashem, hate rah; He preserveth the nefashot of His chasidim; He delivereth them out of the yad resha'im.
11Ohr dawns for the tzaddik, and simchah for the yishrei lev (upright in heart).
12Rejoice in Hashem, ye tzaddikim; and give thanks at the remembrance of His kodesh (holiness).
