Psalms 91

Safe and Secure
1When you abide under the shadow of Shaddai, # 91:1 Shaddai (šadday) is taken from a Hebrew root word with many expressive meanings. It can mean “God of the Mountain,” “God the Destroyer of Enemies,” “God the Self-Sufficient One,” “God the Nurturer of Babies,” or “God the Almighty.” Moses the lawgiver is the author of this psalm, yet every verse seems to breathe the unlimited grace and mercy of God.
you are hidden # 91:1 Or “[I] endure through the night.” See Job 39:28, where the same Hebrew word is used for an eagle passing the night on the high cliffs. in the strength of God Most High.
2He’s the hope that holds me and the stronghold to shelter me,
the only God for me, and my great confidence.
3He will rescue you from every hidden trap of the enemy, # 91:3 Or “hunter.”
and he will protect you from false accusation
and any deadly curse. # 91:3 As translated from the most ancient Hebrew manuscripts and the Septuagint. The Hebrew word can mean “poisoned arrows.”
4His massive arms # 91:4 Or “wings.” Also found in the next sentence, “under his wings,” which speaks not of God having wings, but of the wings of the cherubim resting on the mercy seat. The implication is that we can always come to the mercy seat and rest without fear. are wrapped around you, protecting you.
You can run under his covering of majesty and hide.
His arms of faithfulness are a shield keeping you from harm.
5You will never worry about an attack of demonic forces at night
nor have to fear a spirit of darkness coming against you.
6Don’t fear a thing!
Whether by night or by day, demonic danger will not trouble you, # 91:6 Verses 5–6 are seen by many Jewish scholars as a reference not merely to pestilence and natural dangers but to the realm of spiritual darkness that would come against God’s servants. These spirits are equated to “arrows that fly in daytime” or “a pestilence that walks” in the darkness. God’s sheltered ones are kept from the harm that could come from natural sources or supernatural sources. What a wonderful place to hide and be secure!
nor will the powers of evil be launched against you.
7Even in a time of disaster, with thousands and thousands being killed,
you will remain unscathed and unharmed.
8You will be a spectator as the wicked perish in judgment,
for they will be paid back for what they have done!
9-10When we live our lives within the shadow of God Most High,
our secret hiding place, we will always be shielded from harm.
How then could evil prevail against us or disease infect us?
11God sends angels with special orders to protect you wherever you go,
defending you from all harm.
12If you walk into a trap, they’ll be there for you
and keep you from stumbling.
13You’ll even walk unharmed among the fiercest powers of darkness, # 91:13 The Hebrew includes the words for “lions,” “snakes,” and “dragons” as the three great symbols of satanic power.
trampling every one of them beneath your feet!
14For here is what the Lord has spoken to me:
“Because you loved me, delighted in me, and have been loyal to my name,
I will greatly protect you.
15I will answer your cry for help every time you pray,
and you will feel my presence
in your time of trouble.
I will deliver you and bring you honor.
16I will satisfy you with a full life and with all that I do for you.
For you will enjoy the fullness of my salvation!”

1He that dwelleth in the seter Elyon (covering, hiding place of the Most High) shall abide under the tzel Shaddai (shadow of the Almighty).
2I will say of Hashem, He is my refuge and my fortress; Elohai (my G-d); in Him will I trust.
3Surely He shall save thee from the pach yakosh ([deadly] snare of the fowler), and from the devastating dever (plague).
4He shall cover thee with His evrah (pinion, flight feathers), and under His kenafayim (wings) shalt thou find defense; His Emes shall be thy shield and buckler.
5Thou shalt not be afraid of the pachad (terror) by lailah; nor of the khetz (arrow) that flieth yomam (by day);
6Nor for the dever (plague) that walketh in darkness; nor for the ketev (pestilence, destruction) that destroyeth at tzohorayim (noon).
7An elef (thousand) may fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy yamin (right hand); but it shall not come near thee.
8Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the shillumah (recompense, retribution) of the resha'im.
9Because thou hast made Hashem, which is my refuge, even Elyon, thy ma'on (habitation, dwelling),#91:9 See Jn 14:2
10There shall no ra'ah (evil, disaster) befall thee, neither shall any nega come near thy ohel.
11For He shall give charge to His malachim (angels) concerning thee, to be shomer over thee in kol drakhim of thee.
12They#91:12 the malachim of Hashem shall bear thee up on their palms, lest thou dash thy regel against an even (stone).
13Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder; the young lion and the tannin (serpent) shalt thou trample under foot.
14Because he hath set his longing upon Me, therefore will I rescue him; I will set him on high, because he hath da'as of Shmi (My Name).
15He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in tzoros; I will deliver him, and honor him.
16With orech yamim (length of days, long life) will I satisfy him, and show him My Yeshu'ah (salvation).
