Psalms 84

Longing for God
For the Pure and Shining One
A prophetic song written by the prophetic singers of Korah’s clan
Set to the melody of “For the Feast of Harvest” # 84 The Septuagint reads “For the wine vats.”
1God of Heaven’s Armies, you find so much beauty in your people!
They’re like lovely # 84:1 The Hebrew word for “lovely” used here can also mean “beloved.” This translation includes both of these concepts in this verse. sanctuaries of your presence.
2Deep within me are these lovesick longings,
desires and daydreams of living in union with you.
When I’m near you, my heart and my soul
will sing and worship with my joyful songs of you,
my true source and spring of life!
3O Lord of Heaven’s Armies, my King and my God,
even the sparrows and swallows are welcome to build a nest
among your altars to raise their young.
4What pleasure fills those who live every day in your temple,
enjoying you as they worship in your presence!
Pause in his presence
5How enriched are they who find their strength in the Lord; # 84:5 The Aramaic reads “How blessed is the Son of Man with you as his helper.”
within their hearts are the highways of holiness! # 84:5 The Hebrew is literally “Roads are in their hearts.” It implies the ways [roads or “highways”] that lead us to God’s holy presence.
6Even when their paths wind through the dark valley of tears,
they dig deep to find a pleasant pool where others find only pain.
He gives to them a brook of blessing
filled from the rain of an outpouring.
7They grow stronger and stronger with every step forward,
and the God of all gods will appear before them in Zion.
8Hear my cry, O God of Heaven’s Armies!
God of Jacob, listen to my loving prayer.
Pause in his presence
9God, your wraparound presence is our defense.
In your kindness look upon the faces of your anointed ones. # 84:9 Or “the face of your Anointed [Christ].”
10For just one day of intimacy with you # 84:10 Or “in your [temple] courts.” is like
a thousand days of joy rolled into one!
I’d rather stand at the threshold in front of the Gate Beautiful,
ready to go in and worship my God,
than to live my life without you
in the most beautiful palace of the wicked.
11For the Lord God is brighter than the brilliance of a sunrise!
Wrapping himself around me like a shield,
he is so generous with his gifts of grace and glory.
Those who walk along his paths with integrity
will never lack one thing they need, for he provides it all!
12O Lord of Heaven’s Armies,
what euphoria fills those who forever trust in you!

(For the one directing. On the gittit. Mizmor for the Bnei Korach)
1 How yedidot (lovely) are thy mishkanot, O Hashem Tzva'os!
2 My nefesh longeth, yea, even fainteth for the khatzrot Hashem (courts of Hashem); my lev and my basar crieth out for El Chai.
3 Yea, the sparrow hath found a bais, and the swallow a ken (nest) for herself, where she may lay her young, even Thine mizbechot, O Hashem Tzva'os Malki v'Elohai.
4 Ashrei are they that dwell in Thy Beis;#84:4 Hamikdash they are ever praising Thee. Selah
5 Ashrei is the adam whose oz (strength) is in Thee; in whose lev are their highways [to Tziyon].#84:5 see Ps 84:7 [8]
6 Who passing through the valley of Baca (weeping) make it a ma'ayon (spring, fountain); the moreh (early rain) also covereth it with berakhot (blessings).
7 They go from strength to strength, every one of them who appeareth before Elohim in Tziyon.
8 O Hashem Elohim Tzva'os, hear my tefillah; give ear, O Elohei Ya'akov. Selah
9 Behold mogineinu (our shield), O Elohim, and look upon the face of Thine Moshiach.
10 For a yom in Thy khatzrot is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the Beis Elohai, than to dwell in the ohalim resha (tents of wickedness).
11 For Hashem Elohim is a shemesh and a mogen; Hashem will give chen and kavod; no good thing will He withhold from the holekhim b'tamim (them that walk uprightly).
12 O Hashem Tzva'os, ashrei is the adam bote'ach (man that trusteth, hath confident faith) in Thee.
