A Cry to God
To the Pure and Shining One
Asaph’s song of love’s celebration
1I poured out my complaint to you, God.
I lifted up my voice, shouting out for your help.
2When I was in deep distress, in my day of trouble,
I reached out for you with hands stretched out to heaven.
Over and over I kept looking for you, God,
but your comforting grace was nowhere to be found.
3As I thought of you I moaned, “God, where are you?” # 77:3 Or “When I am in heaviness [depressed], I will think upon God.”
I’m overwhelmed with despair as I wait for your help to arrive.
Pause in his presence
4I can’t get a wink of sleep until you come and comfort me.
Now I’m too burdened to even pray!
5My mind wandered, thinking of days gone by—
the years long since passed.
6Then I remembered the worship songs I used to sing
in the night seasons,
and my heart began to fill again with thoughts of you.
So my spirit went out once more in search of you.
7Would you really walk off and leave me forever, my Lord God?
Won’t you show me your kind favor, delighting in me again?
8Has your well of sweet mercy dried up?
Will your promises never come true?
9Have you somehow forgotten to show me love?
Are you so angry that you’ve closed
your heart of compassion toward me?
Pause in his presence
10Lord, what wounds me most is that it’s somehow my fault that
you’ve changed your heart toward me
and I no longer see the years of the Mighty One
or your right hand of power. # 77:10 This difficult verse has a number of alternate translations, including “Your right hand has changed [or withered].” The implication is that God’s power and protection are no longer being seen.
11Yet I could never forget all your miracles, my God,
as I remember all your wonders of old.
12I ponder all you’ve done, Lord, musing on all your miracles.
13It’s here in your presence, in your sanctuary,
where I learn more of your ways, # 77:13 This is an alternative translation.
for holiness is revealed in everything you do.
Lord, you’re the one and only, the great and glorious God!
14Your display of wonders, miracles, and power
makes the nations acknowledge you.
15By your glory-bursts you’ve rescued us over and over.
Just ask the sons of Jacob or
the sons of Joseph, and they will tell you!
And all of us, your beloved ones, know that it’s true!
Pause in his presence
16When the many waters of the Red Sea took one look at you, # 77:16 Although the Red Sea is not mentioned in the verse, it is implied in the context.
they were afraid and ran away to hide—
trembling to its depths!
17Storm clouds filled with water high in the skies;
cloudbursts and thunderclaps announced your approach.
Lightning-flashes lit up the landscape.
18Rolling whirlwinds exploded with sonic booms of thunder,
rumbling as the skies shouted out your story
with light and sound and wind.
Everything on earth shook and trembled as you drew near.
19Your steps formed a highway through the seas
with footprints on a pathway no one even knew was there. # 77:19 This could be a prophecy of Jesus one day walking on water.
20You led your people forward by your loving hand,
blessed by the leadership of Moses and Aaron.

For Jeduthun, the music director. A psalm of Asaph.
1I cry out to God for help—I even shout. If only he would listen to me!
2When I was in trouble I prayed to the Lord. All night long I stretched out my hands to him in prayer but nothing brought me any comfort.
3I thought about God, groaning loudly; I meditated on him, but I was discouraged. Selah.
4You stop me going to sleep;#77:4. Literally, “you seize my eyelids.” I'm so upset I can't even talk.
5I think of the old days, years ago.
6I remember the songs I sang in the night. I meditate and ask myself:
7Has the Lord given up on me#77:7. “On me.” No object is given in these verses—it could also be “us” or “the people.” forever? Won't he ever be pleased with me again?
8Has his trustworthy love disappeared forever? Have his promises permanently ended?
9Has God forgotten to be kind? Has he angrily slammed the door shut on his compassion? Selah.
10Then I said, “This is what hurts me the most: the Most High doesn't treat me the way he used to.”#77:10. Literally, “And I said, ‘This is my wound: the right hand of the Most High has changed.’”
11I remember what you have done, Lord; I remember all the wonderful things you did long ago.
12I will think about all you have accomplished; I will think deeply about how you have acted.
13God, your ways are holy; is any god as great as you?
14You are the God who does wonderful things! You have revealed your power to the nations.
15Through your strength you saved your people, the descendants of Jacob and Joseph. Selah.
16When the waters saw you, God, when they looked they trembled! Yes, they shook down to the very depths!#77:16. The word used here relates to the deep mentioned in Genesis 1:2. The image also recalls the parting of the Red Sea during the Exodus, an allusion confirmed in verse 20.
17The clouds poured rain down; the skies crashed with thunder; your lightning flew like arrows.
18Your thunder rumbled from the whirlwind; lightning flashes lit up the world; the earth quaked and shook.
19Your way led through the sea; your path passed through the deep sea; yet your footprints were invisible.
20You led your people like a flock, shepherded by Moses and Aaron.
