A Cry to God
To the Pure and Shining One
Asaph’s song of love’s celebration
1I poured out my complaint to you, God.
I lifted up my voice, shouting out for your help.
2When I was in deep distress, in my day of trouble,
I reached out for you with hands stretched out to heaven.
Over and over I kept looking for you, God,
but your comforting grace was nowhere to be found.
3As I thought of you I moaned, “God, where are you?” # 77:3 Or “When I am in heaviness [depressed], I will think upon God.”
I’m overwhelmed with despair as I wait for your help to arrive.
Pause in his presence
4I can’t get a wink of sleep until you come and comfort me.
Now I’m too burdened to even pray!
5My mind wandered, thinking of days gone by—
the years long since passed.
6Then I remembered the worship songs I used to sing
in the night seasons,
and my heart began to fill again with thoughts of you.
So my spirit went out once more in search of you.
7Would you really walk off and leave me forever, my Lord God?
Won’t you show me your kind favor, delighting in me again?
8Has your well of sweet mercy dried up?
Will your promises never come true?
9Have you somehow forgotten to show me love?
Are you so angry that you’ve closed
your heart of compassion toward me?
Pause in his presence
10Lord, what wounds me most is that it’s somehow my fault that
you’ve changed your heart toward me
and I no longer see the years of the Mighty One
or your right hand of power. # 77:10 This difficult verse has a number of alternate translations, including “Your right hand has changed [or withered].” The implication is that God’s power and protection are no longer being seen.
11Yet I could never forget all your miracles, my God,
as I remember all your wonders of old.
12I ponder all you’ve done, Lord, musing on all your miracles.
13It’s here in your presence, in your sanctuary,
where I learn more of your ways, # 77:13 This is an alternative translation.
for holiness is revealed in everything you do.
Lord, you’re the one and only, the great and glorious God!
14Your display of wonders, miracles, and power
makes the nations acknowledge you.
15By your glory-bursts you’ve rescued us over and over.
Just ask the sons of Jacob or
the sons of Joseph, and they will tell you!
And all of us, your beloved ones, know that it’s true!
Pause in his presence
16When the many waters of the Red Sea took one look at you, # 77:16 Although the Red Sea is not mentioned in the verse, it is implied in the context.
they were afraid and ran away to hide—
trembling to its depths!
17Storm clouds filled with water high in the skies;
cloudbursts and thunderclaps announced your approach.
Lightning-flashes lit up the landscape.
18Rolling whirlwinds exploded with sonic booms of thunder,
rumbling as the skies shouted out your story
with light and sound and wind.
Everything on earth shook and trembled as you drew near.
19Your steps formed a highway through the seas
with footprints on a pathway no one even knew was there. # 77:19 This could be a prophecy of Jesus one day walking on water.
20You led your people forward by your loving hand,
blessed by the leadership of Moses and Aaron.

Psalm 77
Asaph wrote this song for the music leader, Jeduthun.
A prayer in times of trouble #77:1 In verses 10-15, the writer remembers the great things that God has done. He remembers that God is still great and powerful. Verses 16-20 are about God leading his people from Egypt to their new home in Canaan. They had to go through the Red Sea. God was so powerful that he made a dry road through the sea for his people. After they crossed the Red Sea, Moses and Aaron led them through the wilderness.
1I will call out to God for help.
I will call aloud to God,
and he will listen to me.
2When trouble came to me,
I looked for the Lord to help me.
All through the night,
I lifted my hands to him while I prayed.
But I did not feel peace in myself.
3When I think about God,
I am sad and upset.
I do not know if he will help me.
Selah.
4God, you do not let me close my eyes to sleep.
I am so upset that I cannot even speak. #77:4 The writer cannot sleep and he does not know what to pray.
5I think about my life long ago,
in the years that have passed.
6At night, I remember the songs that I sang before.
I think carefully about what is happening.
7I ask myself, ‘Will the Lord always turn against me?
Will he never be kind to me again?
8Does he no longer have a faithful love for his people?
Will he never do what he has promised us?
9Has God forgotten to be kind and help us?
Is he so angry that he will not be kind to us any more?’ #77:9 There are 6 questions which the writer asked. They mean, ‘Will God ever help us again?’
Selah.
10Then I said, ‘This makes me very upset!
Has the Most High God stopped helping us?
11I will remember the things that the Lord has done.
Yes, I will remember the miracles that you did long ago.
12I will think about everything that you have done.
I will think carefully about all those great things.’
13God, your ways are holy.
There is no god as great as our God.
14You are the God who does miracles.
You show the nations
that you are very powerful.
15You used your power to rescue your people.
Yes, you saved the descendants
of Jacob and Joseph.
Selah.
16The waters of the sea saw you, God.
When they saw you,
they shook with fear!
Even the deepest seas were afraid.
17Rain poured down from the clouds.
The noise of thunder was in the skies.
Your arrows of lightning
shot everywhere.
18The sound of your thunder was in the storm.
Your lightning made all the world bright.
The earth shook.
19You went through the sea.
Your path went through the deep water,
but nobody saw where your feet had gone.
20You led your people,
as a shepherd leads his sheep.
Moses and Aaron did that for you.
