Psalms 77

A Cry to God
To the Pure and Shining One
Asaph’s song of love’s celebration
1I poured out my complaint to you, God.
I lifted up my voice, shouting out for your help.
2When I was in deep distress, in my day of trouble,
I reached out for you with hands stretched out to heaven.
Over and over I kept looking for you, God,
but your comforting grace was nowhere to be found.
3As I thought of you I moaned, “God, where are you?” # 77:3 Or “When I am in heaviness [depressed], I will think upon God.”
I’m overwhelmed with despair as I wait for your help to arrive.
Pause in his presence
4I can’t get a wink of sleep until you come and comfort me.
Now I’m too burdened to even pray!
5My mind wandered, thinking of days gone by—
the years long since passed.
6Then I remembered the worship songs I used to sing
in the night seasons,
and my heart began to fill again with thoughts of you.
So my spirit went out once more in search of you.
7Would you really walk off and leave me forever, my Lord God?
Won’t you show me your kind favor, delighting in me again?
8Has your well of sweet mercy dried up?
Will your promises never come true?
9Have you somehow forgotten to show me love?
Are you so angry that you’ve closed
your heart of compassion toward me?
Pause in his presence
10Lord, what wounds me most is that it’s somehow my fault that
you’ve changed your heart toward me
and I no longer see the years of the Mighty One
or your right hand of power. # 77:10 This difficult verse has a number of alternate translations, including “Your right hand has changed [or withered].” The implication is that God’s power and protection are no longer being seen.
11Yet I could never forget all your miracles, my God,
as I remember all your wonders of old.
12I ponder all you’ve done, Lord, musing on all your miracles.
13It’s here in your presence, in your sanctuary,
where I learn more of your ways, # 77:13 This is an alternative translation.
for holiness is revealed in everything you do.
Lord, you’re the one and only, the great and glorious God!
14Your display of wonders, miracles, and power
makes the nations acknowledge you.
15By your glory-bursts you’ve rescued us over and over.
Just ask the sons of Jacob or
the sons of Joseph, and they will tell you!
And all of us, your beloved ones, know that it’s true!
Pause in his presence
16When the many waters of the Red Sea took one look at you, # 77:16 Although the Red Sea is not mentioned in the verse, it is implied in the context.
they were afraid and ran away to hide—
trembling to its depths!
17Storm clouds filled with water high in the skies;
cloudbursts and thunderclaps announced your approach.
Lightning-flashes lit up the landscape.
18Rolling whirlwinds exploded with sonic booms of thunder,
rumbling as the skies shouted out your story
with light and sound and wind.
Everything on earth shook and trembled as you drew near.
19Your steps formed a highway through the seas
with footprints on a pathway no one even knew was there. # 77:19 This could be a prophecy of Jesus one day walking on water.
20You led your people forward by your loving hand,
blessed by the leadership of Moses and Aaron.

(For the one directing. Set to Yedutun. Mizmor of Asaph)
1I cried unto Elohim with my voice, even unto Elohim with my voice; and He gave ear unto me.
2 In my yom tzoros (day of trouble) I sought Adonoi; my hand was stretched up in the lailah, and ceased not; my nefesh refused to be comforted.
3 I remembered Elohim, and groaned; I pondered, and my ruach was overwhelmed. Selah
4 Thou holdest mine eyelids awake; I am so troubled that lo adaber (I cannot speak).
5 I have considered the yamim mikedem (days of old), the shnot olamim (years long past).
6 I called to remembrance my neginah balailah (song in the night); I communed with mine own lev; and my ruach pondered with diligent search.
7 Will Adonoi cast off forever? And will He show favor no more?
8 Is His chesed passed away forever? Is His promise at an end l'dor vador?
9 Hath El (G-d) forgotten to be channot (gracious)? Hath He in anger shut up His rachamim (mercy)? Selah
10 And I said, This is my affliction; but I will remember the shanot of the Yemin Elyon (Right Hand of the Most High).
11 I will remember the deeds of Hashem; surely I will remember Thy wonders mikedem (of old, of long ago).
12 I will meditate also on kol po'al (all work) of Thine, and consider Thy mighty deeds.
13 Thy Derech, O Elohim, is bakodesh (in holiness). Who is so gadol El as Elohim?
14 Thou art HaEl oseh peleh (the G-d that doest wonders); Thou hast declared Thy oz (strength) among the amim (peoples, nations).
15 Thou hast with Thine zero'a (strong arm) redeemed Thy people, the Bnei Ya'akov and Yosef. Selah
16 The mayim saw Thee, O Elohim, the mayim saw Thee; they were afraid; the tehomot (ocean depths) also writhed.
17 The clouds poured down mayim; the skies resounded in thunder; Thine khitzim (arrows)#77:17 i.e., lightning bolts also went forth.
18 The voice of Thy thunder was in the galgal (whirlwind); the lightning lit up the tevel (world); ha'aretz trembled and quaked.
19 Thy derech is in the yam (sea), and Thy path is through the mayim rabbim (great waters), and Thy footsteps are not to be discerned.
20 Thou didst lead Thy people like a tzon (flock) by the yad Moshe and Aharon.
