Psalms 76

Awe-Inspiring Power
To the Pure and Shining One
Asaph’s poetic tune, a song of smiting
1God is well known in the land of Judah.
He is famous throughout Israel,
2making his home in Jerusalem, # 76:2 Or “Salem,” the ancient name of Jerusalem. living here on Mount Zion.
3That’s where he smashes every weapon of war
that comes against him.
That’s where he uses the broken arrows
as kindling for his mighty bonfire.
Pause in his presence
4God, you are so resplendent and radiant! # 76:4 The word used here is often translated as “anointed” when taken from either the Hebrew or the Aramaic.
Your majesty shines from your everlasting mountain.
Nothing could be compared to you in glory!
5Even the mightiest of men have been paralyzed by your presence.
They were so stunned and lifeless,
not even the strongest one could lift a hand.
6When Jacob’s God roared his rebuke,
soldiers and their steeds all fell to the ground,
stunned and lying still.
7No wonder you are greatly feared! You are the awe-inspiring God!
For who could ever stand before your face
when your fierce anger burns and live to tell about it.
8As the earth itself holds its breath in awe before you,
judgment is decreed from heaven.
9You arise to punish evil and defend the gentle upon the earth.
Pause in his presence
10You have power to transform man’s futile anger into praise. # 76:10 Or “The counsel of men will praise you.”
The fury of your enemies only causes your fame to increase. # 76:10 The Septuagint reads “Survivors of your wrath keep your festivals.”
11So you’d better keep every promise you’ve ever made
to the Awesome One, Yahweh!
Let all people bring their extravagant gifts to him alone.
12He is famous for breaking the spirit of the powers that be.
And the kings of the earth will know him as the Fearsome One!

Psalm 76
For the director of music. A psalm of Asaph. A song to be played on stringed instruments.
1In the land of Judah, God is well known.
In Israel, his name is great.
2His tent is in Jerusalem.
The place where he lives is on Mount Zion.
3There he broke the deadly arrows of his enemies.
He broke their shields and swords.
He broke their weapons of war.
4God, you shine like a very bright light.
You are more majestic than mountains full of wild animals.
5Brave soldiers have been robbed of everything they had.
Now they lie there, sleeping in death.
Not one of them can even lift his hands.
6God of Jacob, at your command
both horse and chariot lie still.
7People should have respect for you alone.
Who can stand in front of you when you are angry?
8From heaven you handed down your sentence.
The land was afraid and became quiet.
9God, that happened when you rose up to judge.
It happened when you came to save all your suffering people in the land.
10Your anger against sinners brings you praise.
Those who live through your anger gather to worship you.
11Make promises to the Lord your God and keep them.
Let all the neighboring nations
bring gifts to the God who should be respected.
12He breaks the proud spirit of rulers.
The kings of the earth have respect for him.
