Psalms 72

The Righteous King
Solomon’s psalm # 72 The Septuagint indicates this could be a psalm written by David for his son Solomon. This royal psalm is a prayer for the king. Read through it as though it is referring to King Jesus—One who is greater than Solomon.
1O God, make the king a godly judge like you
and give the king’s son the gift of justice too.
2Help him to give true justice to your people,
honorably and equally to all.
3Then the mountains of influence will be fruitful,
and from your righteousness
prosperity and peace will flow to all the people.
4May the poor and humble have an advocate with the king.
May he consider the children of the poor
and crush the cruel oppressor.
5The sun and moon will stop shining
before your devoted lovers will stop worshiping;
for ages upon ages the people will love and adore you!
6Your favor will fall like rain upon our surrendered lives, # 72:6 Or “like rain on mown grass.”
like showers reviving the earth.
7In the days of his reign the righteous will spring forth
with the abundance of peace and prosperity forevermore.
8May he subdue and take dominion from sea to sea;
may he rule from the river to the rim.
9Desert nomads are bowing at his feet;
every enemy is falling facedown, biting the dust!
10Distant kings # 72:10 Included in the Hebrew text are kings of Tarshish (Spain) and kings of Sheba and Seba (Ethiopia). will surrender and come with their gifts
from every continent and coastland;
they will offer their tribute to you.
11O King of kings, they will all bow before you.
O King of kings, every nation will one day serve you.
12-13He will care for the needy and neglected
when they cry to him for help.
The humble and helpless will know his kindness,
for with a father’s compassion he will save their souls.
14They will be rescued from tyranny and torture,
for their lifeblood is precious in his eyes.
15Long live this King!
May the wealth of the world # 72:15 Or “the gold of Sheba.” be laid before him.
May there be ceaseless praise and prayer to him.
May all the blessing be brought to him.
16Bless us with a bountiful harvest,
with golden grain swaying on the mountain fields!
May the cities be full of praising people, fruitful and filled—
17so that his name may be honored forever!
May the fame of his name spring forth!
May it shine on, like the sunshine!
In him all will be blessed to bless others,
and may all the people bless the One who blessed them.
18Praise Yahweh forever, the God of Israel!
He is the one and only God of wonders,
surpassing every expectation.
19The blazing glory of his name will be praised forever!
May all the earth overflow with his glory!
Faithful is our King! Amen!
20This concludes the poetry sung by David, Jesse’s son.

PSALM 72
1 To Solomon. God, give thy doom to the king; and thy rightfulness [or rightwiseness] to the son of the king.
2To deem thy people in rightfulness [or rightwiseness]; and thy poor men in doom.
3Mountains receive peace to the people; and little hills receive rightful-ness [or rightwiseness].
4He shall deem the poor men of the people, and he shall make safe the sons of poor men; and he shall make low the false challenger.
5And he shall dwell with the sun, and before the moon, that is, without beginning, and end; in generation and into generation.
6He shall come down as rain into a fleece; and as gutters dropping on the earth.
7Rightfulness [or rightwiseness] shall come forth in his days; and the abun-dance of peace, till the moon be taken away.
8And he shall be lord from the sea till to the sea; and from the flood till to the ends of the world.
9Ethiopians shall fall down before him; and his enemies shall lick the earth.
10The kings of Tarshish and isles shall offer gifts; the kings of Arabia and of Seba shall bring gifts.
11And all kings shall worship him; all folks shall serve him.
12For he shall deliver a poor man from the mighty; and a poor man to whom there was none helper.
13He shall spare a poor man and needy; and he shall make safe the souls of poor men.
14He shall again-buy the souls of them from usuries, and wickedness; and the name of them is honourable before him.
15And he shall live, and men shall give to him of the gold of Arabia; and they shall ever worship of him, all day they shall bless him.
16Steadfastness shall be in the earth, in the highest place of mountains; the fruit thereof shall be enhanced above the Lebanon; and they shall blossom from the city, as the hay of earth doeth.
17His name be blessed into worlds; his name dwell before the sun. And all the lineages of earth shall be blessed in him; all folks shall magnify him.
18Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; which alone maketh marvels.
19And blessed be the name of his majesty without end; and all earth shall be filled with his majesty; be it done, be it done.
20 The prayers, [or praisings, or hymns], of David, the son of Jesse, be ended.
