Psalms 63

Thirsting for God
For the Pure and Shining One
King David’s song when he was exiled in the Judean wilderness
1O God of my life, I’m lovesick for you in this weary wilderness.
I thirst with the deepest longings to love you more,
with cravings in my heart that can’t be described.
Such yearning grips my soul for you, my God!
2I’m energized every time I enter
your heavenly sanctuary to seek more of your power
and drink in more of your glory.
3For your tender mercies mean more to me than life itself.
How I love and praise you, God!
4Daily I will worship you passionately and with all my heart.
My arms will wave to you like banners of praise.
5I overflow with praise when I come before you,
for the anointing of your presence satisfies me like nothing else.
You are such a rich banquet of pleasure to my soul.
6-7I lie awake each night thinking of you
and reflecting on how you help me like a father.
I sing through the night under your splendor-shadow,
offering up to you my songs of delight and joy!
8With passion I pursue and cling to you.
Because I feel your grip on my life,
I keep my soul close to your heart.
9Those who plot to destroy me shall descend into the darkness of hell.
10They will be consumed by their own evil
and become nothing more than dust under our feet. # 63:10 Or “food for foxes.”
11These liars will be silenced forever!
But with the anointing of a king I will dance and rejoice
along with all his devoted lovers who trust in him.

A Psalm of David, in his being in the wilderness of Judah.
1O God, Thou [art] my God, earnestly do I seek Thee, Thirsted for Thee hath my soul, Longed for Thee hath my flesh, In a land dry and weary, without waters.
2So in the sanctuary I have seen Thee, To behold Thy strength and Thine honour.
3Because better [is] Thy kindness than life, My lips do praise Thee.
4So I bless Thee in my life, in Thy name I lift up my hands.
5As [with] milk and fatness is my soul satisfied, And [with] singing lips doth my mouth praise.
6If I have remembered Thee on my couch, In the watches — I meditate on Thee.
7For Thou hast been a help to me, And in the shadow of Thy wings I sing.
8Cleaved hath my soul after Thee, On me hath Thy right hand taken hold.
9And they who for desolation seek my soul, Go in to the lower parts of the earth.
10They cause him to run on the edge of the sword, A portion for foxes they are.
11And the king doth rejoice in God, Boast himself doth every one swearing by Him, But stopped is the mouth of those speaking lies!
