Thirsting for God
For the Pure and Shining One
King David’s song when he was exiled in the Judean wilderness
1O God of my life, I’m lovesick for you in this weary wilderness.
I thirst with the deepest longings to love you more,
with cravings in my heart that can’t be described.
Such yearning grips my soul for you, my God!
2I’m energized every time I enter
your heavenly sanctuary to seek more of your power
and drink in more of your glory.
3For your tender mercies mean more to me than life itself.
How I love and praise you, God!
4Daily I will worship you passionately and with all my heart.
My arms will wave to you like banners of praise.
5I overflow with praise when I come before you,
for the anointing of your presence satisfies me like nothing else.
You are such a rich banquet of pleasure to my soul.
6-7I lie awake each night thinking of you
and reflecting on how you help me like a father.
I sing through the night under your splendor-shadow,
offering up to you my songs of delight and joy!
8With passion I pursue and cling to you.
Because I feel your grip on my life,
I keep my soul close to your heart.
9Those who plot to destroy me shall descend into the darkness of hell.
10They will be consumed by their own evil
and become nothing more than dust under our feet. # 63:10 Or “food for foxes.”
11These liars will be silenced forever!
But with the anointing of a king I will dance and rejoice
along with all his devoted lovers who trust in him.

PSALM 63
1 The psalm of David, when he was in the desert of Judah. God, my God, I wake to thee full early. My soul thirsted to thee; my flesh thirsted to thee full manyfold. In a land forsaken without way, and without water,
2so I appeared to thee in holy; that I should see thy virtue, and thy glory.
3For thy mercy is better than lives or life itself; my lips shall praise thee.
4So I shall bless thee in my life; and in thy name I shall raise mine hands.
5My soul be [ful] filled as with inner fatness and uttermore fatness; and my mouth shall praise with lips of full out joying.
6So I had mind on thee on my bed, in the morrowtides I shall think of thee;
7for thou hast been mine helper. And in the covering of thy wings I shall make full out joy,
8my soul cleaved after thee; thy right hand took me up.
9Forsooth they sought in vain my life, they shall enter into the lower things of earth;
10they shall be betaken into the hands of sword, they shall be made the parts of foxes.
11But the king shall be glad in God; and all men shall be praised that swear in him; for the mouth of them, that speak wicked things, is stopped.
