Psalms 63

Thirsting for God
For the Pure and Shining One
King David’s song when he was exiled in the Judean wilderness
1O God of my life, I’m lovesick for you in this weary wilderness.
I thirst with the deepest longings to love you more,
with cravings in my heart that can’t be described.
Such yearning grips my soul for you, my God!
2I’m energized every time I enter
your heavenly sanctuary to seek more of your power
and drink in more of your glory.
3For your tender mercies mean more to me than life itself.
How I love and praise you, God!
4Daily I will worship you passionately and with all my heart.
My arms will wave to you like banners of praise.
5I overflow with praise when I come before you,
for the anointing of your presence satisfies me like nothing else.
You are such a rich banquet of pleasure to my soul.
6-7I lie awake each night thinking of you
and reflecting on how you help me like a father.
I sing through the night under your splendor-shadow,
offering up to you my songs of delight and joy!
8With passion I pursue and cling to you.
Because I feel your grip on my life,
I keep my soul close to your heart.
9Those who plot to destroy me shall descend into the darkness of hell.
10They will be consumed by their own evil
and become nothing more than dust under our feet. # 63:10 Or “food for foxes.”
11These liars will be silenced forever!
But with the anointing of a king I will dance and rejoice
along with all his devoted lovers who trust in him.

Psalm 63
David wrote this psalm when he was in the Judah wilderness.
A morning song #63:1 See 1 Samuel 23—24; 2 Samuel 15:23. David was in a difficult place, far away from the temple in Jerusalem. He still wanted to know that God was near to him.
1God, you are my God.
I want to be near to you.
I need you to give me life,
like a thirsty person in a dry desert.
As a person needs water to live,
that is how I need you. #63:1 As our bodies need food and drink so that we can live, we also need God to give us spiritual life.
2When I have gone into your temple,
I have seen what you are like.
I have seen your great power and your glory.
3Your faithful love for me is better than life itself.
So I will speak out to praise you.
4Yes, I will thank you for as long as I live.
I will lift up my hands and I will pray to you.
5You make me very happy,
better than a feast of good food.
I will sing happy songs to praise you.
6When I lie on my bed,
I think about you all through the night.
7You are the one who keeps me safe,
like a bird protects its babies under its wings.
So I sing happy songs.
8I keep very near to you
and your strong right hand keeps me safe.
9My enemies are trying to kill me,
but I know that they themselves will die.
They will go down into the deep hole of death.
10Soldiers will kill them with swords.
Wild dogs will eat their dead bodies.
11But the king will sing songs to praise God. #63:11 David is probably talking about himself here, as king.
Everybody who promises to serve God
will speak aloud to praise him.
But everyone who tells lies
will not be able to say anything!
