Has God Forgotten Us?
To the Pure and Shining One
King David’s poem for instruction # 60 Or “According to Shushan Eduth. A Mikhtam of David, to teach.” There is no scholarly consensus about what Shushan Eduth means. Some have concluded it refers to a specific tune or possibly an instrument, but it remains a mystery. composed when he fought against the Syrians with the outcome still uncertain and Joab turned back to kill twelve thousand descendants of Esau in the Valley of Salt
To the tune of “Lily of the Covenant”
1God, it seems like you walked off and left us!
Why have you turned against us?
You have been angry with us.
O Lord, we plead, come back and help us as a father.
2The earth quivers and quakes before you,
splitting open and breaking apart.
Now come and heal it, for it is shaken to its depths.
3You have taught us hard lessons
and made us drink the wine of bewilderment.
4You have given miraculous signs to those who love you.
As we follow you, we fly the flag of truth,
and all who love the truth will rally to it.
Pause in his presence
5Come to your beloved ones and gently draw us out.
For Lord, you save those whom you love.
Come with your might and strength!
6-7Then I heard the Lord speak in his holy splendor.
From his sanctuary I heard the Lord promise:
“In my triumph I will be the one to measure out
the portion of my inheritance to my people,
and I will secure the land as I promised you.
Shechem, Succoth, Gilead, Manasseh,
they are all still mine!” he says.
“Judah will continue to produce kings and lawgivers,
and Ephraim will produce great warriors.
8Moab will become my lowly servant.
Edom will likewise serve my purposes.
I will lift up a shout of victory over the land of Philistia!
9But who will bring my triumph into the strong city?
Who will lead me into Edom’s # 60:9 Edom is a variant form of the name Adam. fortresses?”
10Have you really rejected us, refusing to fight our battles?
11Give us a father’s help when we face our enemies.
For to trust in any man is an empty hope.
12With God’s help we will fight like heroes,
and he will trample down our every foe!

PSALM 60
1 To victory, on the witnessing of the rose, the sweet song of David, to teach men, when he fought against Aram of floods, and Syria of Zobah; and Joab turned again, and smote Edom in the valley of salt pits, twelve thousand. God, thou hast put away us, and thou hast destroyed us; thou were wroth, and thou hast done mercy to us.
2Thou movedest the earth, and thou troubledest it; make thou whole the sorrows thereof, for it is moved.
3Thou showedest hard things to thy people; thou gavest drink to us with the wine of compunction.
4Thou hast given a signifying to them that dread thee; that they flee from the face of the bow.
5That thy darlings be delivered; make thou safe with thy right hand, and hear thou me#60:5 Compare Psalm 60:5-12 to Psalm 108:6-13..
6God spake by [or in] his holy place; I shall be glad, and I shall part Shechem, and I shall mete [or measure] the great valley of tabernacles.
7Gilead is mine, and Manasseh is mine; and Ephraim is the strength of mine head. Judah is my king;
8Moab is the pot of mine hope. Into Idumea I shall stretch forth my shoe; aliens be made subject to me.
9Who shall lead me into a city made strong; who shall lead me into Idumea?
10Whether not thou, God, that hast put away us; and shalt thou not, God, go out in our virtues?
11Lord, give thou to us help out of tribulation; for the help of man is vain.
12In God we shall make virtue; and he shall bring to nought them that trouble or disturb us.
