Psalms 58
58
Judge of the Judges
For the Pure and Shining One
King David’s golden song of instruction
To the tune of “Do Not Destroy”
1-2God’s justice? You high and mighty politicians
know nothing about it!
Which one of you has walked in justice toward others?
Which one of you has treated everyone right and fair?
Not one! You only give “justice” in exchange for a bribe.
For the right price you let others get away with murder.
3-4Wicked wanderers even from the womb—that’s who you are!
You lie with your words, and your teaching is poison. # 58:3–4 The Hebrew reads “venom of a serpent,” which is a clear metaphor for wrong teaching.
5Like cobras closing their ears to the most expert of the charmers,
you strike out against all who are near.
6O God, break their fangs;
shatter the teeth of these ravenous lions!
7Let them disappear like water falling on thirsty ground.
Let all their weapons be useless.
8Let them be like snails dissolving into the slime.
Let them be cut off, never seeing the light of day!
9God will sweep them away so fast
that they’ll never know what hit them. # 58:9 The Hebrew here is recognized by nearly every scholar to be one of the most difficult verses in the Psalms to translate.
10The godly will celebrate in the triumph of good over evil,
and the lovers of God will trample
the wickedness of the wicked under their feet!
11Then everyone will say, “There is a God who judges the judges”
and “There is a great reward in loving God!”

Psalm 58
This is for the music leader, and he should use special music.
David wrote this prayer.
God will judge all people #58:1 In this psalm, David asks God to punish his enemies. He knows that God is fair. He always does what is right. God is the one who judges everybody in a fair way. The Hebrew in some of the verses is very hard to understand. If you read other Bible translations, you will find that some of the verses seem different.
1Do you rulers really say what is right?
Do you judge people in a fair way?
2No! You do not!
You like to think of evil things to do.
You make cruel things happen
everywhere in the land.
3 Wicked people do wrong things from their birth.
As soon as they are born,
they start telling lies.
4Their words hurt people
like a snake's poison.
They listen to nobody,
like a deaf cobra.
5It does not obey the voice of the magician,
even if he sings very well! #58:5 These wicked people will not listen to God. Some magicians can make snakes obey them when they sing or make music. The wicked people are like snakes that are deaf and they cannot obey.
6God, break the teeth of my enemies!
Yes, Lord, break into pieces
the teeth of those lions!
7Cause them to run away like water and disappear.
Cause them to die like dry grass in hot weather.
8Cause them to be like a worm that melts as it moves along.
Cause them to be like a child that is born dead
and never sees the light of day.
9Remove them quickly,
more quickly than pots become hot over a fire of thorn bushes. #58:9 David asks God to punish these bad people. David wants God to remove them very quickly. He used pictures of different things to say what he means.
10When God punishes those wicked people,
righteous people will be very happy.
They will wash their feet in the blood of the wicked people!
11People who see it will say,
‘It is true! God helps good people!
There is a God who judges people on earth in a fair way.’
