Trusting in God
For the Pure and Shining One
King David’s golden song of instruction composed when the Philistines captured him in Gath To the tune of “The Oppression of the Princes to Come” # 56 Or “the distant dove of silence.” David was no more than twenty-two years old when he composed this psalm.
1Lord, show me your kindness and mercy,
for these men oppose and oppress me all day long.
2Not a day goes by without somebody harassing me.
So many in their pride trample me under their feet. # 56:2 The Septuagint reads “They war with me in the high places.”
3But in the day that I’m afraid, I lay all my fears before you
and trust in you with all my heart.
4What harm could a man bring to me?
With God on my side, I will not be afraid of what comes.
The roaring praises of God fill my heart
as I trust his promises.
5Day after day cruel critics distort my words;
constantly they plot my collapse.
6They lurk in the dark, waiting, spying on my movements in secret
to take me by surprise, ready to take my life.
7They don’t deserve to get away with this!
Look at their wickedness, their injustice, Lord.
In your fierce anger cast them down to defeat.
8You’ve kept track of all my wandering and my weeping.
You’ve stored my many tears in your bottle—not one will be lost.
For they are all recorded in your book of remembrance. # 56:8 See Mal. 3:16.
9The very moment I call to you for a father’s help
the tide of battle turns and my enemies flee.
This one thing I know: God is on my side!
10I trust in the Lord. And I praise him!
I trust in the Word of God. And I praise him!
11What harm could man do to me?
With God on my side, I will not be afraid of what comes.
My heart overflows with praise to God and for his promises.
I will always trust in him.
12So I’m thanking you with all my heart,
with gratitude for all you’ve done.
I will do everything I’ve promised you, Lord.
13For you have saved my soul from death
and my feet from stumbling
so that I can walk before the Lord
bathed in his life-giving light. # 56:13 Or “in his fields of life.”

Be Merciful to Me, O God
(1 Samuel 21:8–15)
For the choirmaster. To the tune of “A Dove on Distant Oaks.” A Miktam #56:0 Miktam is probably a musical or liturgical term; used for Psalms 16 and 56–60. of David, when the Philistines seized him in Gath.
1Be merciful to me, O God,
for men are hounding me;
all day they press their attack.
2My enemies pursue me all day long,
for many proudly assail me.
3When I am afraid,
I put my trust in You.
4In God, whose word I praise—
in God I trust.
I will not be afraid.
What can man do to me?
5All day long they twist my words;
all their thoughts are on my demise.
6They conspire, they lurk,
they watch my steps
while they wait to take my life.
7In spite of such sin, will they escape?#56:7 Or do not let them escape; MT does not include do not.
In Your anger, O God, cast down the nations.
8You have taken account of my wanderings.#56:8 Or sorrows
Put my tears in Your bottle—
are they not in Your book?
9Then my enemies will retreat
on the day I cry for help.
By this I will know that God is on my side.
10In God, whose word I praise,
in the Lord, whose word I praise,
11in God I trust; I will not be afraid.
What can man do to me?
12Your vows are upon me, O God;
I will render thank offerings to You.
13For You have delivered my soul from death,
and my feet from stumbling,
that I may walk before God
in the light of life.
