Psalms 46

God on Our Side
For the Pure and Shining One by the prophetic singers of Korah’s clan
A poetic song to the melody of “Hidden Things” # 46 As translated in the Septuagint. Other versions read “for the maidens.” Ps. 46 is known as one of the Songs of Zion. The others are Pss. 48; 76; 84; 87; 122. These are psalms that praise Jerusalem as God’s dwelling place.
1God, you’re such a safe and powerful place to find refuge!
You’re a proven help in time of trouble—
more than enough and always available whenever I need you.
2So we will never fear
even if every structure of support # 46:2 Or “earth itself.” were to crumble away.
We will not fear even when the earth quakes and shakes,
moving mountains and casting them into the sea.
3For the raging roar of stormy winds and crashing waves
cannot erode our faith in you.
Pause in his presence
4God has a constantly flowing river whose sparkling streams
bring joy and delight to his people.
His river flows right through the city of God Most High,
into his holy dwelling places. # 46:4 The plural “dwelling places” points to believers today. Each believer is now the holy dwelling place of God. God’s river flows into us and through us.
5God is in the midst of his city, # 46:5 This is a reference to Jerusalem, but today God calls his church a “city” on a hill. secure and never shaken.
At daybreak his help will be seen with the appearing of the dawn.
6When the nations are in uproar with their tottering kingdoms,
God simply raises his voice,
and the earth begins to disintegrate before him.
7Here he comes!
The Commander!
The mighty Lord of Angel Armies is on our side!
The God of Jacob fights for us!
Pause in his presence
8-9Everyone look!
Come and see the breathtaking wonders of our God.
For he brings both ruin and revival.
He’s the one who makes conflicts end
throughout the earth,
breaking and burning every weapon of war.
10Surrender your anxiety. # 46:10 Or “Let go!” The Septuagint reads “relax.”
Be still and realize that I am God.
I am God above all the nations,
and I am exalted throughout the whole earth.
11Here he stands!
The Commander!
The mighty Lord of Angel Armies is on our side!
The God of Jacob fights for us!
Pause in his presence

(For the one directing. Of the Bnei Korach. Al-alamot.#46:0 after the manner of virgins, i.e., in the treble Shir)
1 Elohim is our refuge and strength, a very present help in tzoros.
2 Therefore we will not fear, though eretz be shaken, and though the harim (mountains) fall into the lev yamim (heart of the seas);
3 Though the mayim thereof roar and be troubled, though the harim shake with the surging thereof. Selah
4 There is a nahar (river), the streams whereof shall make glad the Ir Elohim, the Kedosh Mishkenei Elyon (the holy dwelling of the Most High).
5 Elohim is in the midst of it;#46:5 i.e., the Ir Elohim it shall not be moved; Elohim shall help it at early boker.
6 The Goyim raged, the kingdoms totter; He uttered His voice, eretz melted.
7 Hashem Tzva'os is with us; Elohei Ya'akov is our stronghold. Selah
8 Come, behold the works of Hashem, what desolations He hath made in ha'aretz.
9 He maketh milchamot to cease unto the end of ha'aretz; He breaketh the keshet (bow), and cutteth the khanit (spear); He burneth the chariots in the eish.
10 Be still, and know that I am Elohim: I will be exalted among the Goyim, I will be exalted in ha'aretz.
11 Hashem Tzva'os is with us; Elohei Ya'akov is our stronghold. Selah
