The Blessing of the Wise
A poetic song by King David, the servant of the Lord
1The rebellion of sin speaks as an oracle of God,
speaking deeply to the conscience of wicked men. # 36:1 Or “The heart of the wicked is rebellious to the core.”
Yet they are still eager to sin,
for the fear of God is not before their eyes.
2See how they flatter themselves,
unable to detect and detest their sins.
They are crooked and conceited,
convinced they can get away with anything.
3Their wicked words are nothing but lies.
Wisdom is far from them.
Goodness is both forgotten and forsaken.
4They lie awake at night to hatch their evil plots,
always planning their schemes of darkness,
and never once do they consider the evil of their ways.
5But you, O Lord, your mercy-seat love is limitless,
reaching higher than the highest heavens.
Your great faithfulness is infinite,
stretching over the whole earth.
6Your righteousness is unmovable,
just like the mighty mountains.
Your judgments are as full of wisdom
as the oceans are full of water.
Your tender care and kindness leave no one forgotten,
not a man or even a mouse.
7O God, how extravagant is your cherishing love!
All mankind can find a hiding place
under the shadow of your wings.
8All may drink of the anointing from the abundance # 36:8 The Hebrew word translated “abundance” is literally “butterfat” or “oil.” It is a symbol of the anointing of the Holy Spirit. of your house. # 36:8 Or “They will be satisfied [or watered] in the abundance of your house.”
All may drink their fill from the rivers of Eden. # 36:8 Or “Eden’s rivers of pleasure.” The garden of Eden had flowing rivers of delight. Eden means “pleasure.” The Hebrew word used here is the plural form of Eden.
9The fountain of life flows from you # 36:9 See Prov. 10:11; 13:14; John 1:4. to satisfy me.
In your light of holiness we receive the light of revelation.
10Lord, keep pouring out your unfailing love
on those who are near you.
Release more of your blessings to those who are loyal to you.
11Don’t let these proud boasters trample me down;
don’t let them push me around
by the sheer strength of their wickedness.
12There they lie in the dirt, these evil ones,
thrown down to the ground, never to arise again!

Human sin and God's goodness
1Sinners don't respect God;#Ro 3.18.
sin is all they think about.
2They like themselves too much
to hate their own sins
or even to see them.
3They tell deceitful lies,
and they don't have the sense
to live right.
4Those people stay awake,
thinking up mischief,
and they follow the wrong road,
refusing to turn from sin.
5Your love is faithful, LORD,
and even the clouds in the sky
can depend on you.
6Your decisions are always fair.
They are firm like mountains,
deep like the sea,
and all people and animals
are under your care.
7Your love is a treasure,
and everyone finds shelter
in the shadow of your wings.
8You give your guests a feast
in your house,
and you serve a tasty drink
that flows like a river.
9The life-giving fountain
belongs to you,
and your light gives light
to each of us.
10Our LORD, keep showing love
to everyone who knows you,
and use your power to save all
whose thoughts please you.
11Don't let those proud
and merciless people
kick me around
or chase me away.
12Look at those wicked people!
They are knocked down,
never to get up again.
