He Healed Me
King David’s poetic praise to God
A song for the Feast of Dedication of the dwelling place
1Lord, I will exalt you and lift you high,
for you have lifted me up on high!
Over all my boasting, gloating enemies,
you made me to triumph.
2O Lord, my healing God,
I cried out for a miracle and you healed me!
3You brought me back from the brink of death,
from the depths below.
Now here I am, alive and well, fully restored!
4O sing and make melody, you steadfast lovers of God.
Give thanks to him every time you reflect on his holiness!
5I’ve learned that his anger lasts for a moment,
but his loving favor lasts a lifetime! # 30:5 The Septuagint reads “There is wrath in his anger but life in his will [promise].”
We may weep through the night,
but at daybreak it will turn into shouts of ecstatic joy.
6-7I remember boasting, “I’ve got it made!
Nothing can stop me now!
I’m God’s favored one; he’s made me steady as a mountain!”
But then suddenly, you hid your face from me.
I was panic-stricken and became depressed.
8Still I cried out to you, Lord God. I shouted out for mercy, saying,
9“What would you gain in my death,
if I were to go down to the depths of darkness?
Will a grave sing your song?
How could death’s dust declare your faithfulness?”
10So hear me now, Lord; show me your famous mercy.
O God, be my Savior and rescue me!
11Then he broke through and transformed all my wailing
into a whirling dance of ecstatic praise!
He has torn the veil and lifted from me
the sad heaviness of mourning.
He wrapped me in the glory-garments of gladness.
12How could I be silent when it’s time to praise you?
Now my heart sings out, bursting with joy—
a bliss inside that keeps me singing,
“I can never thank you enough!”

Psalm 30
David wrote this song. He asks God to bless the Temple.
Thank you, Lord #30:1 In this psalm, David thanks God for taking care of him. Sometimes David had trouble. He thought that he would die. But when he asked God for help, God was very kind to him. Then David remembered to thank God. He tells other people to praise God too. We can all use Psalm 30 when God answers our prayers.
1 Lord, I will praise you,
because you have saved me from death.
You have not let my enemies laugh at me.
2 Lord, my God, I called to you for help,
and you have made me well again.
3 Lord, you pulled me up
out of the deep hole of death.
You saved me
from among those who are going into the grave.
4Sing to the Lord,
you people who trust him.
Praise his holy name.
5His anger continues only for a moment,
but he is kind to us for our whole life.
You may be sad all through the night,
but in the morning, you will be happy again. #30:5 David was very ill. He thought that he would soon die. He prayed to God. God made him well again. So he asks everyone that believes in God to praise God with him. God was angry only for a short time.
6When I was feeling safe and strong,
I thought, ‘Nothing can ever destroy me.’
7But Lord, it was you who made my kingdom strong,
because you are so kind.
But then you turned away from me,
and I became very afraid. #30:7 David thought that he had made himself safe. God showed David that this was not true. It was only God that made David safe and strong.
8I called to you for help, Lord.
I asked you to be kind to me, my Lord.
9If I go down into the deep hole of death,
that will not help you!
My dead body cannot praise you there!
It cannot tell people to trust you!
10 Lord, please listen to me!
Please be kind to me!
Lord, please be my helper!
11Now you have caused me to stop crying,
so that I dance instead!
I do not need to wear sackcloth,
because I am no longer sad.
Instead, you have made me very happy. #30:11 David is now happy again. He does not need to wear rough clothes (sackcloth) any more. People wore sackcloth to show that they were very sad.
12So I am truly happy and I will sing to praise you.
I cannot stay quiet!
Lord, my God,
I will continue to thank you for ever.
