Psalms 148

The Cosmic Chorus of Praise
1Hallelujah! Praise the Lord! Let the skies be filled with praise
and the highest heavens with the shouts of glory!
2Go ahead—praise him, all you his messengers!
Praise him some more, all you heavenly hosts!
3Keep it up, sun and moon!
Don’t stop now, all you twinkling stars of light!
4Take it up even higher—up to the highest heavens,
until the cosmic chorus thunders his praise! # 148:4 Poetic implication in the text. The literal Hebrew reads “[Praise him] you waters above the sky.”
5Let the entire universe erupt with praise to God.
He spoke and created it all—from nothing to something.
6He established the cosmos to last forever,
and he stands behind his commands
so his orders will never be revoked.
7Let the earth join in with this parade of praise!
You mighty creatures of the ocean’s depths,
echo in exaltation!
8Lightning, hail, snow, clouds,
and the stormy winds that fulfill his word—
9bring your melody, O mountains and hills;
trees of the forest and field, harmonize your praise!
10-12Praise him, all beasts and birds, mice and men,
kings, queens, princes, and princesses,
young men and maidens, children and babes,
old and young alike, everyone everywhere!
13Let them all join in with this orchestra of praise.
For the name of the Lord is the only name we raise!
His stunning splendor ascends higher than the heavens.
14He anoints his people with strength and authority,
showing his great favor to all his godly lovers,
even to his princely people, Israel,
who are so close to his heart.
Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!

All Creation Summoned to Praise
1Hallelujah!
I
Praise the Lord from the heavens;
praise him in the heights.
2Praise him, all you his angels;
give praise, all you his hosts.#Ps 103:20f; Dn 3:58–63.
3Praise him, sun and moon;
praise him, all shining stars.
4Praise him, highest heavens,#Highest heavens: lit., “the heavens of the heavens,” i.e., the space above the firmament, where the “upper waters” are stored, cf. Gn 1:6–7; Dt 10:14; 1 Kgs 8:27; Ps 104:3, 13.
you waters above the heavens.
5Let them all praise the Lord’s name;
for he commanded and they were created,#Ps 33:9; Gn 1:3f; Jdt 16:14.
6Assigned them their station forever,
set an order that will never change.
II
7Praise the Lord from the earth,
you sea monsters and all the deeps of the sea;#Ps 135:6; Gn 1:21.
8Lightning and hail, snow and thick clouds,
storm wind that fulfills his command;
9Mountains and all hills,
fruit trees and all cedars;#Is 44:23.
10Animals wild and tame,
creatures that crawl and birds that fly;#Ps 30:5; Gn 1:21, 24f; Dt 4:7.
11Kings of the earth and all peoples,
princes and all who govern on earth;
12Young men and women too,
old and young alike.
13Let them all praise the Lord’s name,
for his name alone is exalted,
His majesty above earth and heaven.#Ps 30:5; Dt 4:7.
14#Has lifted high the horn of his people: the horn symbolizes strength, the concrete noun for the abstract. Of all peoples, God has chosen Israel to return praise and thanks in a special way.He has lifted high the horn of his people;
to the praise of all his faithful,
the Israelites, the people near to him.
Hallelujah!
