Psalms 147
147
Our Amazing God
1Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!
How beautiful it is when we sing our praises to the beautiful God,
for praise makes you lovely before him
and brings him great delight!
2Yahweh builds up Jerusalem;
he gathers up the outcasts and brings them home.
3He heals the wounds of every shattered heart.
4He sets his stars in place, calling them all by their names. # 147:4 See Job 9:9; 38:31–33; Isa. 40:26; Amos 5:8.
5How great is our God!
There’s absolutely nothing his power cannot accomplish,
and he has infinite understanding of everything.
6Yahweh supports and strengthens the humble,
but the ungodly will be brought down to the dust.
7Sing out with songs of thanksgiving to the Lord!
Let’s sing our praises with melodies overflowing!
8He fills the sky with clouds, sending showers to water the earth
so that the grass springs up on the mountain fields
and the earth produces food for man. # 147:8 As translated from the Septuagint.
9All the birds and beasts who cry with hunger to him
are fed from his hands.
10His people don’t find security in strong horses,
for horsepower is nothing to him.
Manpower is even less impressive!
11Yahweh shows favor to # 147:11 Or “takes pleasure in,” “delights in,” “sets his affection on,” “enjoys,” “finds pleasing,” “is satisfied with.” those who fear him,
those who wait for his tender embrace. # 147:11 Or “who wait for his loyal, unfailing love.”
12Jerusalem, praise the Lord! Zion, worship your God!
13For he has strengthened the authority of your gates.
He even blesses you with more children.
14He’s the one who brings peace to your borders, # 147:14 The Septuagint reads “He makes peace your borders.”
feeding you the most excellent of fare.
15He sends out his orders throughout the world;
his words run as swift messengers, bringing them to pass.
16He blankets the earth with glistening snow,
painting the landscape with frost.
17Sleet and hail fall from the sky,
causing waters to freeze before winter’s icy blast.
18Then he speaks his word and it all melts away;
as the warm spring winds blow, the streams begin to flow.
19In the same way, he speaks his word to Jacob,
and to Israel he brings his life-giving instruction.
20He has dealt with Israel differently than with any other people,
for they have received his laws.
Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!

Psalm 147
The 2nd Hallelujah Psalm
1 Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!
It is good to sing to praise our God!
Yes, it is right to praise him and it makes us happy.
2The Lord is building Jerusalem again.
He is bringing home the Israelite exiles.
3He makes people who are very sad well again. #147:3 God's people lived as exiles in Babylon for 70 years. Then he brought his people home to Jerusalem again. He helped them to be happy again.
He helps their wounds to get better.
4He decided how many stars there should be in the sky.
He has given a name to each of them.
5Our Lord is great and very powerful.
He understands everything!
6The Lord gives help to poor people,
but he knocks down wicked people to the ground.
7Offer a song to the Lord,
to thank him for what he has done.
Make music with a harp
to praise our God.
8He fills the sky with clouds.
He sends rain to make the earth wet.
He causes grass to grow on the hills.
9He gives food for the animals to eat.
He feeds the young ravens when they cry. #147:9 A raven is a big, black bird.
10If a horse is very strong,
that does not please him.
If a soldier is brave,
that does not make him happy.
11Who does make the Lord happy?
People who respect him and serve him well.
People who trust him because they know he loves them.
12Jerusalem's people, praise the Lord!
Yes, Zion's people, praise your God! #147:12 God has given his people a city to live in. Zion was the special part of Jerusalem where God's Temple was built.
13 Praise him because he makes your city's gates strong.
He blesses the people who live there.
14He causes your borders to be safe from your enemies.
He gives you lots of the best wheat to eat.
15He sends his commands to reach all the earth.
Very soon the whole world knows what he wants.
16He covers the earth with snow,
like a white blanket.
He puts white frost everywhere,
like ashes that the wind blows.
17He throws hail from the sky,
like small stones.
When he sends a cold wind,
nobody can continue to stand.
18Then he commands it all to melt.
He makes the warm wind blow,
and the ice becomes streams of water.
19He sends his message to Jacob's descendants.
He gives his rules and laws to Israel's people. #147:19 Israel is the name that God gave to Jacob. So Jacob's descendants and Israel's people both mean the Israelites.
20He has not done that for any other nation.
They do not know his laws. #147:20 At that time, only the Israelite people knew God's rules and laws. Now, everybody who has a Bible can know how God wants us to live.
Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!
