Rescue Me
King David’s poetic song as he stood before Goliath # 144 As translated from the Septuagint. Put yourself in David’s place as he faced a giant named Goliath. Imagine how he felt as you read through this psalm.
1There is only one strong, safe, and secure place for me;
it’s in God alone who gives me strength for the battle.
2He’s my shelter of love and my fortress of faith,
who wraps himself around me as a secure shield.
I hide myself in this one who subdues enemies before me.
3Lord, what is it about us that you would even notice us?
Why do you even bother with us?
4For man is nothing but a faint whisper, a mere breath.
We spend our days like nothing more than a passing shadow.
5Step down from heaven, Lord, and come down!
Make the mountains melt at your touch.
6Loose your fiery lightning flashes and scatter your enemies.
Overthrow them with your terrifying judgments.
7Reach down from your heavens
and rescue me from this hell
and deliver me from these dark powers.
8They speak nothing but lies; their words are pure deceit.
Nothing they say can ever be trusted.
9My God, I will sing you a brand-new song!
The harp inside my heart will make music to you!
10I will sing of you, the one who gives victory to kings—
the one who rescues David, your loving servant,
from the fatal sword.
11Deliver me and save me from these dark powers
who speak nothing but lies.
Their words are pure deceit,
and you can’t trust anything they say.
12Deliver us! Then our homes will be happy.
Our sons will grow up as strong, sturdy men
and our daughters with graceful beauty,
royally fashioned as for a palace.
13-14Our barns will be filled to the brim,
overflowing with the fruits of our harvest.
Our fields will be full of sheep and cattle,
too many to count,
and our livestock will not miscarry their young.
Our enemies will not invade our land,
and there’ll be no breach in our walls.
15What bliss we experience when these blessings fall!
The people who love and serve our God will be happy indeed!

PSALM 144
1 A psalm of David. Blessed be my Lord God, that teacheth mine hands to war; and my fingers to battle.
2My mercy, and my refuge; my taker-up, and my deliverer. My defender, and I hoped in him; and thou makest subject my people under me.
3Lord, what is a man, for thou hast made thyself known to him; either the son of man, for thou areckonest him of some value?
4A man is made like vanity; his days pass as a shadow.
5Lord, bow down thine heavens, and come thou down; touch thou [the] hills, and they shall make smoke.
6Light thou shining, and thou shalt scatter them; send thou out thine arrows, and thou shalt trouble them.
7Send out thine hand from on high, ravish me out, and deliver thou me from many waters; and from the hand of alien sons.
8The mouth of whom spake vanity; and the right hand of them is the right hand of wickedness.
9God, I shall sing to thee a new song; I shall say psalm to thee in psaltery of ten strings.
10Which givest health to kings, which again-boughtest David, thy servant; from the wicked sword ravish thou out me.
11And deliver thou me from the hand of alien sons; the mouth of which spake vanity, and the right hand of them is the right hand of wickedness.
12Whose sons be as new plantings in their youth. The daughters of them be arrayed; adorned about as the likeness of a temple.
13The cellars of them be full; bring-ing out from this vessel into that, or from one vessel into another. The sheep of them be with lambs, plenteous [or abounding] in their goings out;
14their kine be fat. There is no falling of their wall, neither passing over of it; neither cry is in the streets of them.
15They said, The people is blessed, that hath these things; blessed is the people, whose Lord is the God of it.
