Rescue Me
King David’s poetic song as he stood before Goliath # 144 As translated from the Septuagint. Put yourself in David’s place as he faced a giant named Goliath. Imagine how he felt as you read through this psalm.
1There is only one strong, safe, and secure place for me;
it’s in God alone who gives me strength for the battle.
2He’s my shelter of love and my fortress of faith,
who wraps himself around me as a secure shield.
I hide myself in this one who subdues enemies before me.
3Lord, what is it about us that you would even notice us?
Why do you even bother with us?
4For man is nothing but a faint whisper, a mere breath.
We spend our days like nothing more than a passing shadow.
5Step down from heaven, Lord, and come down!
Make the mountains melt at your touch.
6Loose your fiery lightning flashes and scatter your enemies.
Overthrow them with your terrifying judgments.
7Reach down from your heavens
and rescue me from this hell
and deliver me from these dark powers.
8They speak nothing but lies; their words are pure deceit.
Nothing they say can ever be trusted.
9My God, I will sing you a brand-new song!
The harp inside my heart will make music to you!
10I will sing of you, the one who gives victory to kings—
the one who rescues David, your loving servant,
from the fatal sword.
11Deliver me and save me from these dark powers
who speak nothing but lies.
Their words are pure deceit,
and you can’t trust anything they say.
12Deliver us! Then our homes will be happy.
Our sons will grow up as strong, sturdy men
and our daughters with graceful beauty,
royally fashioned as for a palace.
13-14Our barns will be filled to the brim,
overflowing with the fruits of our harvest.
Our fields will be full of sheep and cattle,
too many to count,
and our livestock will not miscarry their young.
Our enemies will not invade our land,
and there’ll be no breach in our walls.
15What bliss we experience when these blessings fall!
The people who love and serve our God will be happy indeed!

Psalm 144
This is a song that David wrote.
God is strong and we praise him
1 Lord, I praise you!
You are my strong Rock!
You teach me how to fight well.
You show me how to use my weapons.
2You always love me.
You are the strong place where I am safe.
You save me from the power of my enemies.
You are like a shield for me.
I know that I am safe with you.
You give me power over nations. #144:2 ‘power over nations’ or ‘power over my people’.
3 Lord, why do you even think about men and women?
Why do you take care of humans?
4People soon pass away, just like a breath.
Their life is like a shadow that soon goes.
5 Lord, open up the heavens!
Leave your home and come down to earth!
Touch the mountains so that they burn with smoke.
6Send bright lightning to frighten your enemies.
Shoot your arrows at them
so that they run away. #144:6 The lightning is like arrows that come from God.
7Put your hand down from heaven,
and pick me out from the deep water. #144:7 David feels like he is in deep and dangerous water, because his enemies are giving him a lot of trouble.
Save me from the power of foreign people.
8Their mouths speak lies.
Even when they make a promise,
they are deceiving people.
9I will sing to you a new song, God.
I will make music to you on my harp. #144:9 David prays for help (maybe against Goliath and the Philistines). If God saves David from death by the sword, David will make music to the Lord.
10You help kings to win against their enemies.
You also save me, your servant David, from my enemies,
when they try to kill me with their dangerous swords.
11Keep me safe from the power of foreign people.
They speak lies.
Even when they make a promise, it is false.
12When our sons are young,
may they grow quickly, like strong plants.
May our daughters become tall and beautiful,
like the beautiful pillars in a king's house.
13May our homes have plenty of different kinds of food.
May our sheep have thousands of lambs,
so that there is no space in our fields.
14May our cows become fat. #144:14 ‘May our cows become fat’ or ‘May our cows give birth to many babies’ or ‘May our bulls have heavy loads of food to carry’.
I pray that our enemies will never knock down our city's walls.
I pray that none of us will become their prisoners.
I pray that nobody will cry in our city's streets because they are afraid.
15When God does that for a nation,
he has surely blessed those people!
If people know that the Lord is their God,
then God has blessed them!
