Psalms 144

Rescue Me
King David’s poetic song as he stood before Goliath # 144 As translated from the Septuagint. Put yourself in David’s place as he faced a giant named Goliath. Imagine how he felt as you read through this psalm.
1There is only one strong, safe, and secure place for me;
it’s in God alone who gives me strength for the battle.
2He’s my shelter of love and my fortress of faith,
who wraps himself around me as a secure shield.
I hide myself in this one who subdues enemies before me.
3Lord, what is it about us that you would even notice us?
Why do you even bother with us?
4For man is nothing but a faint whisper, a mere breath.
We spend our days like nothing more than a passing shadow.
5Step down from heaven, Lord, and come down!
Make the mountains melt at your touch.
6Loose your fiery lightning flashes and scatter your enemies.
Overthrow them with your terrifying judgments.
7Reach down from your heavens
and rescue me from this hell
and deliver me from these dark powers.
8They speak nothing but lies; their words are pure deceit.
Nothing they say can ever be trusted.
9My God, I will sing you a brand-new song!
The harp inside my heart will make music to you!
10I will sing of you, the one who gives victory to kings—
the one who rescues David, your loving servant,
from the fatal sword.
11Deliver me and save me from these dark powers
who speak nothing but lies.
Their words are pure deceit,
and you can’t trust anything they say.
12Deliver us! Then our homes will be happy.
Our sons will grow up as strong, sturdy men
and our daughters with graceful beauty,
royally fashioned as for a palace.
13-14Our barns will be filled to the brim,
overflowing with the fruits of our harvest.
Our fields will be full of sheep and cattle,
too many to count,
and our livestock will not miscarry their young.
Our enemies will not invade our land,
and there’ll be no breach in our walls.
15What bliss we experience when these blessings fall!
The people who love and serve our God will be happy indeed!

Psalm 144
By David.
1Thank the Lord, my rock,
who trained my hands to fight
and my fingers to do battle,
2my merciful one, my fortress,
my stronghold, and my savior,
my shield, the one in whom I take refuge,
and the one who brings people under my authority.
3O Lord, what are humans that you should care about them?
What are mere mortals that you should think about them?
4Humans are like a breath of air.
Their life span is like a fleeting shadow.
5O Lord, bend your heaven low, and come down.
Touch the mountains, and they will smoke.
6Hurl bolts of lightning, and scatter them.
Shoot your arrows, and throw them into confusion.
7Stretch out your hands from above.
Snatch me, and rescue me from raging waters
and from foreigners’ hands.
8Their mouths speak lies.
Their right hands take false pledges.
9O God, I will sing a new song to you.
I will sing a psalm to you on a ten-stringed harp.
10You are the one who gives victory to kings.
You are the one who snatches your servant David
away from a deadly sword.
11Snatch me, and rescue me from foreigners’ hands.
Their mouths speak lies.
Their right hands take false pledges.
12May our sons be like full-grown, young plants.
May our daughters be like stately columns
that adorn the corners of a palace.
13May our barns be filled with all kinds of crops.
May our sheep give birth to thousands of lambs,
tens of thousands in our fields.
14May our cattle have many calves.
May no one break in, and may no one be dragged out.
May there be no cries of distress in our streets.
15Blessed are the people who have these blessings!
Blessed are the people whose God is the Lord!
