My Only Hope
King David’s poetic song of instruction
A prayer when he was confined in a cave
1God, I’m crying out to you!
I lift up my voice boldly to beg for your mercy.
2I spill out my heart to you and tell you all my troubles.
3For when I was desperate, overwhelmed, and about to give up,
you were the only one there to help.
You gave me a way of escape
from the hidden traps of my enemies.
4I look to my left and right to see if there is anyone who will help,
but there’s no one who takes notice of me.
I have no hope of escape, and no one cares whether I live or die.
5So I cried out to you, Lord, my only hiding place.
You’re all I have, my only hope in this life,
my last chance for help.
6Please listen to my heart’s cry,
for I am low and in desperate need of you!
Rescue me from all those who persecute me,
for I am no match for them.
7Bring me out of this dungeon so I can declare your praise!
And all the righteous will celebrate
all the wonderful things you’ve done for me!

Psalm 142
This is a special song that David wrote.
He prayed this when he was in the cave. #142:0 David wrote this song in a cave. It is a prayer that David prayed when his enemies were trying to catch him. He does not say who these enemies were. There are two stories about David hiding in a cave. See 1 Samuel 22 and 1 Samuel 24.
Please help me, Lord!
1I am calling to the Lord to help me.
I ask him to be kind to me.
2I tell him about all my problems.
I tell him about all my troubles.
3When I do not feel brave,
you are still my guide, Lord.
In the path where I walk,
my enemies have prepared a trap to catch me.
4Look at me!
I have no friend to help me.
There is no safe place where I can go.
Nobody thinks about me.
5Yes Lord, I am calling to you to help me.
You are my safe place where I can hide.
You are all that I need in this world where I live.
6Please listen to me as I cry to you.
I am very upset!
My enemies are trying to catch me.
Save me from their power!
They are stronger than I am.
7Please take me out of this prison. #142:7 The cave where David was hiding seemed like a prison to him. He could not leave safely unless God helped him.
Then I will praise your name.
Your own good people will see how you have helped me.
They will meet round me to praise you.
