My Only Hope
King David’s poetic song of instruction
A prayer when he was confined in a cave
1God, I’m crying out to you!
I lift up my voice boldly to beg for your mercy.
2I spill out my heart to you and tell you all my troubles.
3For when I was desperate, overwhelmed, and about to give up,
you were the only one there to help.
You gave me a way of escape
from the hidden traps of my enemies.
4I look to my left and right to see if there is anyone who will help,
but there’s no one who takes notice of me.
I have no hope of escape, and no one cares whether I live or die.
5So I cried out to you, Lord, my only hiding place.
You’re all I have, my only hope in this life,
my last chance for help.
6Please listen to my heart’s cry,
for I am low and in desperate need of you!
Rescue me from all those who persecute me,
for I am no match for them.
7Bring me out of this dungeon so I can declare your praise!
And all the righteous will celebrate
all the wonderful things you’ve done for me!

A Prayer in Time of Trouble
1A maskil of David, when he was in the cave.#In the cave: cf. 1 Sm 22:1; 24:1–3; Ps 57:1. A prayer.
2With my own voice I cry to the Lord;
with my own voice I beseech the Lord.
3Before him I pour out my complaint,
tell of my distress in front of him.
4When my spirit is faint within me,#Ps 143:4.
you know my path.#Ps 139:24.
As I go along this path,
they have hidden a trap for me.#Ps 141:9.
5I look to my right hand to see#Ps 16:8; 73:23; 121:5.
that there is no one willing to acknowledge me.
My escape has perished;
no one cares for me.
6I cry out to you, Lord,
I say, You are my refuge,#Ps 91:2, 9.
my portion in the land of the living.#Ps 16:5; 27:13; 116:9; Is 38:11.
7Listen to my cry for help,
for I am brought very low.#Ps 79:8.
Rescue me from my pursuers,
for they are too strong for me.
8Lead my soul from prison,
that I may give thanks to your name.
Then the righteous shall gather around me#Then the righteous shall gather around me: in the Temple, when the psalmist offers a thanksgiving sacrifice.
because you have been good to me.
