Psalms 140

A Prayer for Protection
For the Pure and Shining One
King David’s poetic song
1Lord, protect me from this evil one!
Rescue me from these violent schemes!
2He concocts his secret strategy to divide and harm others,
stirring up trouble one against another.
3They are known for their sharp rhetoric
of poisonous, hateful words.
Pause in his presence
4Keep me safe, Lord, out of reach from these wicked and violent men,
and guard me, God, for they have plotted an evil scheme
to ruin me and bring me down.
5They are proud and insolent; they’ve set an ambush for me in secret.
They are determined to snare me in their net like captured prey.
Pause in his presence
6-7O Lord, you are my God and my saving strength!
My Hero-God, you wrap yourself around me to protect me.
For I’m surrounded by your presence in my day of battle.
Lord Yahweh, hear my cry.
May my voice move your heart to show me mercy.
8Don’t let the wicked triumph over me,
but bring down their every strategy to subdue me
or they will become even more arrogant!
Pause in his presence
9Those who surround me are nothing but proud troublemakers.
May they drink the poison of their own poisonous words.
10-11May their slanderous lives never prosper!
Let evil itself hunt them down and pursue them relentlessly
until they are thrown into fiery pits
from which they will never get out!
Let burning coals of hellfire fall upon their heads!
12For I know, Lord, that you will be the hero
of all those they persecute,
and you will secure justice for the poor.
13Your godly ones will thank you no matter what happens.
For they choose and cherish your presence
above everything else!

Psalm 140
This is a song that David wrote.
It is for the music leader.
Please help me, Lord
1 Lord, please save me from evil people.
Keep me safe from people who like to attack others.
2They think of evil ideas to hurt people.
They only want to cause trouble!
3Their words hurt people,
like the tongue of a snake.
They bite with poison,
like a dangerous snake.
Selah
4 Lord, keep me safe from the power of wicked people.
Keep me safe from violent people who want to attack me.
5 Proud people have prepared a trap to catch me.
They have put their nets across my path. #140:5 People used traps and nets to catch animals and birds. These bad people wanted to catch David. It is like they hid their traps and nets to catch him.
Selah.
6 Lord, I say to you, ‘You are my God.’
Lord, hear my prayer for help!
7 Lord, my Lord, you are my strong helper.
You keep me safe when I fight in a battle.
8 Lord, do not let wicked people do what they want to do.
Stop them when they prepare to attack.
Selah.
9Give trouble to the people who come round me to attack!
Let the bad things that they say against me
happen to them instead! #140:9 David is praying. He wants the trouble that he has to go to his enemies instead.
10Drop burning coals on them like rain!
Throw those people into the fire!
Let them fall into deep holes that they cannot get out of!
11People who tell cruel lies should not live in our land.
Trouble will happen to people who like to fight.
Bad trouble will knock them down!
12I know that the Lord helps poor people.
He makes sure that they receive justice.
13Your righteous people will always praise you.
Good, honest people will live near to you.
