Psalms 135

His Wonderful Works
A song of the stairway
1Shout hallelujah and praise the greatness of God!
All his righteous ones, praise him!
2All you worshiping priests on duty in the temple,
3praise him, for he is beautiful!
Sing loving praises to his lovely name.
4For Yahweh has chosen Jacob for his own purpose,
and Israel is his special treasure.
5Next to every other god, the greatness of our God is unequaled.
For our God is incomparable!
6He does what he pleases with unlimited power and authority,
extending his greatness throughout the entire universe!
7He forms the misty clouds and creates thunder and lightning,
bringing the wind and rain out of his heavenly storehouse.
8He struck down the eldest child in each Egyptian home;
both man and beast perished that night.
9He did great miracles—mighty signs and wonders throughout the land
before Pharaoh and all his subjects.
10He conquered many nations and killed their mighty kings,
11like Sihon, king of the Amorites, and Og, king of Bashan,
and kings from every kingdom in Canaan.
12He gave their land to Israel as an inheritance for his people.
13O Yahweh, your name endures forever!
Your fame is known in every generation.
14For you will vindicate your persecuted people,
showing your tender love to all your servants.
15The unbelieving nations worship what they make.
They worship their wealth and their work.
They idolize what they own and what they do.
16-18Their possessions will never satisfy.
Their lifeless and futile works cannot bring life to them!
Their things can’t talk to them or answer their prayers.
Blind men can only create blind things.
Those deaf to God can only make a deaf image. # 135:16–18 Referring to the idols, the Hebrew could be translated “with mouths, but they cannot speak; with eyes, but they cannot see; with ears, but they cannot hear.”
Dead men can only create dead idols.
And everyone who trusts in these powerless, dead things
will be just like what they worship—powerless and dead!
19Praise Lord Yahweh, all the families of Israel!
Praise Lord Yahweh, you family of Aaron! # 135:19 The name Aaron means “light-bringer” or “light-bearer.”
20Let all the priests # 135:20 Or “all the family of Levi.” Levi represents the holy priesthood. bless Lord Yahweh!
Let all his lovers who bow low before him # 135:20 Or “those who fear him.”
praise the Lord Yahweh!
21So bless the Lord Yahweh who lives in Jerusalem
and dwells in Zion’s glory!
Hallelujah and praise the Lord!

The Greatness of the Lord and the Vanity of Idols
1Praise ye the Lord.
Praise ye the name of the Lord;
praise him, O ye servants of the Lord.
2Ye that stand in the house of the Lord,
in the courts of the house of our God,
3praise the Lord;
for the Lord is good:
sing praises unto his name;
for it is pleasant.
4For the Lord hath chosen Jacob unto himself,
and Israel for his peculiar treasure.
5For I know that the Lord is great,
and that our Lord is above all gods.
6Whatsoever the Lord pleased,
that did he in heaven, and in earth,
in the seas, and all deep places.
7He causeth the vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth;
he maketh lightnings for the rain;
he bringeth the wind out of his treasuries.
8Who smote the firstborn of Egypt,
both of man and beast.
9 Who sent tokens and wonders into the midst of thee, O Egypt,
upon Pharaoh, and upon all his servants.
10Who smote great nations,
and slew mighty kings;
11Sihon king of the Amorites,
and Og king of Bashan,
and all the kingdoms of Canaan:
12and gave their land for a heritage,
a heritage unto Israel his people.
13Thy name, O Lord, endureth for ever;
and thy memorial, O Lord, throughout all generations.
14For the Lord will judge his people,
and he will repent himself concerning his servants.

Ps 115.4-8; Rev 9.20. The idols of the heathen are silver and gold,
the work of men's hands.
16They have mouths, but they speak not;
eyes have they, but they see not;
17they have ears, but they hear not;
neither is there any breath in their mouths.
18They that make them are like unto them:
so is every one that trusteth in them.
19Bless the Lord, O house of Israel:
bless the Lord, O house of Aaron:
20bless the Lord, O house of Levi:
ye that fear the Lord, bless the Lord.
21Blessed be the Lord out of Zion,
which dwelleth at Jerusalem.
Praise ye the Lord.
