Psalms 135

His Wonderful Works
A song of the stairway
1Shout hallelujah and praise the greatness of God!
All his righteous ones, praise him!
2All you worshiping priests on duty in the temple,
3praise him, for he is beautiful!
Sing loving praises to his lovely name.
4For Yahweh has chosen Jacob for his own purpose,
and Israel is his special treasure.
5Next to every other god, the greatness of our God is unequaled.
For our God is incomparable!
6He does what he pleases with unlimited power and authority,
extending his greatness throughout the entire universe!
7He forms the misty clouds and creates thunder and lightning,
bringing the wind and rain out of his heavenly storehouse.
8He struck down the eldest child in each Egyptian home;
both man and beast perished that night.
9He did great miracles—mighty signs and wonders throughout the land
before Pharaoh and all his subjects.
10He conquered many nations and killed their mighty kings,
11like Sihon, king of the Amorites, and Og, king of Bashan,
and kings from every kingdom in Canaan.
12He gave their land to Israel as an inheritance for his people.
13O Yahweh, your name endures forever!
Your fame is known in every generation.
14For you will vindicate your persecuted people,
showing your tender love to all your servants.
15The unbelieving nations worship what they make.
They worship their wealth and their work.
They idolize what they own and what they do.
16-18Their possessions will never satisfy.
Their lifeless and futile works cannot bring life to them!
Their things can’t talk to them or answer their prayers.
Blind men can only create blind things.
Those deaf to God can only make a deaf image. # 135:16–18 Referring to the idols, the Hebrew could be translated “with mouths, but they cannot speak; with eyes, but they cannot see; with ears, but they cannot hear.”
Dead men can only create dead idols.
And everyone who trusts in these powerless, dead things
will be just like what they worship—powerless and dead!
19Praise Lord Yahweh, all the families of Israel!
Praise Lord Yahweh, you family of Aaron! # 135:19 The name Aaron means “light-bringer” or “light-bearer.”
20Let all the priests # 135:20 Or “all the family of Levi.” Levi represents the holy priesthood. bless Lord Yahweh!
Let all his lovers who bow low before him # 135:20 Or “those who fear him.”
praise the Lord Yahweh!
21So bless the Lord Yahweh who lives in Jerusalem
and dwells in Zion’s glory!
Hallelujah and praise the Lord!

Psalm 135
1Praise the LORD!
Praise the LORD’s name!
All you who serve the LORD, praise God!
2All you who stand in the LORD’s house—
who stand in the courtyards of our God’s temple—
3praise the LORD, because the LORD is good!
Sing praises to God’s name because it is beautiful!
4Because the LORD chose Jacob as his own,
God chose Israel as his treasured possession.
5Yes, I know for certain that the LORD is great—
I know our Lord is greater than all other gods.
6The LORD can do whatever he wants
in heaven or on earth,
in the seas and in every ocean depth.
7God forms clouds at the far corners of the earth.
God makes lightning for the rain.
God releases the wind from its storeroom.
8God struck down the Egyptians’ oldest offspring—
both human and animal!
9God sent signs and wonders into the very center of Egypt—
against Pharaoh and all his servants.
10God struck down many nations
and killed mighty kings:
11Sihon the Amorite king,
Og the king of Bashan,
and all the Canaanite kings.
12Then God handed their land over as an inheritance—
as an inheritance to Israel, his own people.
13 LORD, your name is forever!
LORD, your fame extends from one generation to the next!
14The LORD gives justice to his people
and has compassion on those who serve him.
15The nations’ idols are just silver and gold—
things made by human hands.
16They have mouths, but they can’t speak.
They have eyes, but they can’t see.
17They have ears, but they can’t listen.
No, there’s no breath in their lungs!
18Let the people who made these idols
and all who trust in them
become just like them!
19House of Israel, bless the LORD!
House of Aaron, bless the LORD!
20House of Levi, bless the LORD!
You who honor the LORD, bless the LORD!
21Bless the LORD from Zion—
bless the one who lives in Jerusalem!
Praise the LORD!
