Psalms 132
132
David’s Dynasty
A song of the stairway
1Lord, please don’t forget all the hardships
David had to pass through.
2And how he promised you, Jacob’s mighty God, saying,
3“I will not cross the threshold of my own home
to sleep in my own bed.
4I will not sleep or slumber,
nor even take time to close my eyes in rest,
5until I find a place for you to dwell, O mighty God of Jacob.
I devote myself to finding a resting place for you!” # 132:5 Historically, this refers to David wanting to bring the ark of glory back to Jerusalem.
6First we heard that the ark was at Bethlehem.
Then we found it in the forest of Kiriath-Jearim. # 132:6 Although the Hebrew text does not have the word ark but simply it, this translation supplies the word ark from its reference in verse 8. For the sake of understanding the text, this translation substitutes “Bethlehem” for “Ephrathah” (Ephrathah was the ancient name for Bethlehem) and “Kiriath-Jearim” for “Jaar” (“the fields of Jaar” was a variant form of Kiriath-Jearim, which means “the city of forests”).
7Let’s go into God’s dwelling place
and bow down and worship before him.
8Arise, O Lord, and enter your resting place,
both you and the ark of your glorious strength!
9May your priests wear the robes of righteousness,
and let all your godly lovers sing for joy!
10Don’t forsake your anointed king now,
but honor your servant David.
11For you gave your word and promised David
in an unbreakable oath that one of his sons
would be sitting on the throne to succeed him as king.
12You also promised that if David’s sons
would be faithful to keep their promise to follow you,
obeying the words you spoke to them,
then David’s dynasty would never end.
13Lord, you have chosen Zion as your dwelling place,
for your pleasure is fulfilled in making it your home.
14I hear you say, “I will make this place my eternal dwelling,
for I have loved and desired it as my very own!
15I will make Zion prosper and
satisfy her poor with my provision.
16I will cover my priests with salvation’s power,
and all my righteous ones will shout for joy!
17I will increase the anointing that was upon David,
and my glistening glory will rest upon my anointed one.
18I will clothe his enemies with shame,
but holiness will bloom on my anointed one.” # 132:18 As translated from the Septuagint. The Hebrew reads “his crown will sparkle and gleam.”

Psalm 132
A song for going up to worship.
1O Lord, remember David and all the hardships he endured.
2Remember how he swore an oath to the Lord
and made this vow to the Mighty One of Jacob:
3“I will not step inside my house,
4get into my bed, shut my eyes, or close my eyelids
5until I find a place for the Lord,
a dwelling place for the Mighty One of Jacob.”
6Now, we have heard about the ark ⌞of the promise⌟ being in Ephrathah.
We have found it in Jaar.
7Let’s go to his dwelling place.
Let’s worship at his footstool.
8O Lord, arise, and come to your resting place
with the ark of your power.
9Clothe your priests with righteousness.
Let your godly ones sing with joy.
10For the sake of your servant David,
do not reject your anointed one.
11The Lord swore an oath to David.
This is a truth he will not take back:
“I will set one of your own descendants on your throne.
12If your sons are faithful to my promise #132:12 Or “covenant.”
and my written instructions that I will teach them,
then their descendants will also sit on your throne forever.”
13The Lord has chosen Zion.
He wants it for his home.
14“This will be my resting place forever.
Here I will sit enthroned because I want Zion.
15I will certainly bless all that Zion needs.
I will satisfy its needy people with food.
16I will clothe its priests with salvation.
Then its godly ones will sing joyfully.
17There I will make a horn sprout up for David.
I will prepare a lamp for my anointed one.
18I will clothe his enemies with shame,
but the crown on my anointed one will shine.”
