Psalms 132
132
David’s Dynasty
A song of the stairway
1Lord, please don’t forget all the hardships
David had to pass through.
2And how he promised you, Jacob’s mighty God, saying,
3“I will not cross the threshold of my own home
to sleep in my own bed.
4I will not sleep or slumber,
nor even take time to close my eyes in rest,
5until I find a place for you to dwell, O mighty God of Jacob.
I devote myself to finding a resting place for you!” # 132:5 Historically, this refers to David wanting to bring the ark of glory back to Jerusalem.
6First we heard that the ark was at Bethlehem.
Then we found it in the forest of Kiriath-Jearim. # 132:6 Although the Hebrew text does not have the word ark but simply it, this translation supplies the word ark from its reference in verse 8. For the sake of understanding the text, this translation substitutes “Bethlehem” for “Ephrathah” (Ephrathah was the ancient name for Bethlehem) and “Kiriath-Jearim” for “Jaar” (“the fields of Jaar” was a variant form of Kiriath-Jearim, which means “the city of forests”).
7Let’s go into God’s dwelling place
and bow down and worship before him.
8Arise, O Lord, and enter your resting place,
both you and the ark of your glorious strength!
9May your priests wear the robes of righteousness,
and let all your godly lovers sing for joy!
10Don’t forsake your anointed king now,
but honor your servant David.
11For you gave your word and promised David
in an unbreakable oath that one of his sons
would be sitting on the throne to succeed him as king.
12You also promised that if David’s sons
would be faithful to keep their promise to follow you,
obeying the words you spoke to them,
then David’s dynasty would never end.
13Lord, you have chosen Zion as your dwelling place,
for your pleasure is fulfilled in making it your home.
14I hear you say, “I will make this place my eternal dwelling,
for I have loved and desired it as my very own!
15I will make Zion prosper and
satisfy her poor with my provision.
16I will cover my priests with salvation’s power,
and all my righteous ones will shout for joy!
17I will increase the anointing that was upon David,
and my glistening glory will rest upon my anointed one.
18I will clothe his enemies with shame,
but holiness will bloom on my anointed one.” # 132:18 As translated from the Septuagint. The Hebrew reads “his crown will sparkle and gleam.”

1A song of degrees. Lord, remember Dauid with all his affliction. 2Who sware vnto the Lord, and vowed vnto the mightie God of Iaakob, saying, 3I will not enter into the tabernacle of mine house, nor come vpon my pallet or bed, 4Nor suffer mine eyes to sleepe, nor mine eye lids to slumber, 5Vntill I finde out a place for the Lord, an habitation for the mightie God of Iaakob. 6Lo, we heard of it in Ephrathah, and found it in the fieldes of the forest. 7We will enter into his Tabernacles, and worship before his footestoole. 8Arise, O Lord, to come into thy rest, thou, and the Arke of thy strength. 9Let thy Priests be clothed with righteousnesse, and let thy Saints reioyce. 10For thy seruant Dauids sake refuse not the face of thine Anointed. 11The Lord hath sworne in trueth vnto Dauid, and he wil not shrinke from it, saying, Of the fruite of thy body will I set vpon thy throne. 12If thy sonnes keepe my couenant, and my testimonies, that I shall teach them, their sonnes also shall sit vpon thy throne for euer. 13For the Lord hath chosen Zion, and loued to dwell in it, saying, 14This is my rest for euer: here will I dwell, for I haue a delite therein. 15I will surely blesse her vitailes, and will satisfie her poore with bread, 16And will clothe her Priests with saluation, and her Saints shall shoute for ioye. 17There will I make the horne of Dauid to bud: for I haue ordeined a light for mine Anoynted. 18His enemies will I clothe with shame, but on him his crowne shall florish.
